I have many, but the one that made me start this thread was thinking about Return to Castle Wolfenstein (online mode). Call of Duty (online mode) be damned that game has yet to be matched in terms of fun, intensity and pure scope.

I really miss that game.

Too bad neither of them were on the Dreamcast. When ever I have a grilled cheese sandwhich I think about all the great times on the dreamcast

I think about staying up 'til 4 in the morning to finish Sakura Wars. When I play Tatsunoko vs Capcom I play as Batsu, and I remember Rival Schools.

I remember playing Action Quake with a friend. It was my first time playing a game online.

The Dreamcast? Yeah, it was in the room somewhere.

Playing Crazy Taxi... on my PS2.

Okay, actual Dreamcast moment: staying up until the wee hours playing Crazy Taxi 2 after I finally added a DC to the collection in September 2007.

Playing Worms World Party for the first time on the Dreamcast online. That game provided hours of laughter that night.

The time my dad was playing Marine Fishing, he jerked the reel to set the hook & yanked the controller cord out of the DC. :)

I'm listening to the Street Fighter: 3rd Strike soundtrack right now.

Best memories...Probably playing through the old school Resident Evil games on a shitty 19" tube TV. Even though I own the PS1 and PS2 versions, I've never played RE3, and RE:CV on anything else but the Dreamcast.

My most memorable moment was when I watched the opening Cinema of Sonic Adventure for the very first time.

It was so awesome that I got one of those spine tingling moments.

Checking porn for the first time on the internet with my Dreamcast. I thought that was pretty neat to see some nasty ass shit using a video game machine.

Seeing the graphics for the first time at my friend Joe's house. He had the new system. I had never seen it in person before, nor had I seen any of the next gen systems at the time. He had 2 games, the first I saw him play was Blue Stinger. In hindsight, a horrible game- but just the graphics and the sprawling space and watching him explore the maps was very exciting. I was captivated. Nothing since seeing my first NES action had compared to that moment. Plus, the actual console just looked SO DAMN cool!
Another memory, 3 weeks later I actually went with my friend Will to Super Target to pick up a few games for his birthday. He had received a brand new DC for his b-day that morning and for his party, him and his friends (including me) were able to go and pick out 3 or 4 games for it. I remember House of the Dead- the gun action, all the goodness that that night included. I really loved that system, and that time in gaming in general. RE 3 was brand new, quality RPG's were steadily coming out for my beloved PSX. The DC was fresh and new and the next generation of great 3d consoles were on the horizon. great memories.

Plenty of great memories with the little white one. Renting the test unit in the summer before launch was probably the most awe inspiring moment I've ever had in video games. The jump from 32-bit to that is, in my mind, the biggest graphical leap in gaming. I just could not believe the kind of graphics that thing was spitting out, and it was made all better by the breathtaking speed of that first Sonic level. The whale crashing down through the pier was so intense. The Dreamcast may not have been my favorite console, but for me there is no denying that playing that test unit was the most amazing experience in my short history with video games. Getting something that good for a weekend in a small city in Northern Canada just blew my mind, since before that I couldn't even find Saturn games anywhere in the city; and here I had a Dreamcast, months before the general public. I tried everything, just navigating through the system menu, pulling out the modem, scoping out all the ports on the back. It was just so great.

The 9/9/99 launch was awesome - I faced off against the Canadian winter to pick it up day and date, and I played the shit out of Sonic and Soul Calibur all night. I remember just seeing all the games in a display (finally) in a store was a pretty wonderful moment. Sega was back, even if it was fleeting.

Bringing Chu Chu online for the first time was totally awesome, too. I was frustrated by the lag, but still just floored that the whole SegaNet online gaming thing was finally starting to take off after the NetLink floundered on the Saturn. My brother and I had a lot of fun with NBA 2K1 online, too, him playing and me on the keyboard trash talking the rest of the time, haha!

Many, many more memories, but I'll stop there for now.

It was the first system I ever played online with, with Quake 3. I was pretty bad at it but I remember punching a guy to death so many times he just gave up in frustration with me.

I also really loved playing through Shenmue, especially the moment near the end where there is a giant battle with you and another character against dozens of dudes. It really felt like I was playing an action movie. The hilarious unintentionally hilarious dialogue in the early part of the game was great, too.

I also remember playing fighting games with my brother, especially Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. We both had Dreamcasts actually, and we had a good time with them. I also took it to school and it got some play in my dorm. We had a lot of fun with Armada for some reason.

Finally, for a year or so it was pretty much my only way of getting on the Internet. I didn't pay for it, I just abused Netzero accounts. Yes, I did surf porn with it. The Web browser, even the later version, was incredibly slow and clunky compared to what I use today or even compared to a decent computer then, but it was better than nothing so I didn't complain.

You know what is funny as shit is I started a forum war on the old Sega boards with the Quake 3 community board, since it was really the first cross platform game it was a trip and they hated us so bad if we beat them with a controller. I even got one of their members (sicdeath) to spam the hell outta the Sega boards it was hella funny. Their boards were an absolute cesspool back in those days they cussed everyone, they have a much cleaner forum now and nowhere near as interesting, they were dedicated players for sure.

In the end KB/Mouse won though and they owned our asses, what really sucked is when they got those damn grappling guns and we couldn't even use them! That sucked shit.

Gotta admit those Quake 3 guys were nasty and wouldn't hesitate to call you an ass hat and shit on your ego. They wanted to prove a point to us Dreamcast Quake 3 players and I gotta admit they did.

Edit:
After further investigation it seems instead of o\/\/ning the whole forum they now have their own dedicated flame board, lol.

Booting up Headhunter and Rez with the VGA box on a 19" CRT for the first time. Those were some killer graphics for the era.

The second best would be my brother playing NFL 2K1 on my DC after getting his PS2, then him promptly selling his PS2 so he could get his own DC and NFL 2K1 (of course, 2K2 went multiplatform the next year).

Seaman. It doesn't get any more original than that.
Great memories.

Also, playing Ready to Rumble with my dad.
I never heard him laugh so hard, and he even kicked my butt a few rounds.

So many great games and just as many great memories.

I am not very good at games. I either lose interest or patience. But I played Sonic Adventure all the way through to the end ... at least two of them that I knew. It is to date the only game I've finished completely. That's a neat Dreamcast memory.

I spent a ridiculous amount of time chatting on IRC through the Dreamcast browser. It's what got me really interested in the internet, then web design, and computers in general. That interest launched me into my current career path.

So, thank you Dreamcast for getting me where I am today!

The balance was there.

The game kept you going by keeping you in the game. If you weren't running with Sonic, you were fishing with Bigs the Cat (which was done well) or playing short (focused) missions with the other characters.

Otherwise you ran around town and always felt like you were doing something even if it was raising the Chao in the garden, you never felt like you were out of the game. Even with VMU's you had it to go.

You liked Bigs the Cat... admit it! I know you did, don't deny your feelings. Well I did anyway I thought that part was done really well.

One of the best Dreamcast memories that I have is playing through Skies of Arcadia. Untill that point there had never been a fully 3d RPG with so much detail and variety on a home console. Even when Final Fantasy X came along it had a fixed camera and some screens were still pre-rendered mirroring the PSOne days, but Skies of Arcadia was a revelation.

I remember one Saturday I woke up at 11:00 in the morning, made breakfast and booted up the DC. I started playing and before I knew, it was almost Midnight!!! I played the game for over 12 solid hours and didn't even realize it. I was completely swept away in a way which few games can accomplish.

I have so many Dreamcast memories that I will never forget!!!

For me, the Dreamcast is synonymous with Resident Evil. I missed 2 and 3 on the PS1, and played through both of those plus Code Veronica on the DC. I also enjoyed Grandia 2, which was quite a good RPG in spite of the plot.

I never cared much for Sonic Adventure, but I also kind of liked Big the Cat's stages. With him, you didn't have to fight the camera and accidentally go careening off cliffs/through the ground, which was nice.

All my favorite Dreamcast games either originated on other systems or have since been ported to other systems, making it the one completely superfluous system I own. Still, I've yet to play D2 and Illbleed...

Edit: I admire Seaman and Shenmue, but I didn't really love either game.

Im ashamed to admit, bootlegging my first(of many to come) game, Tony Hawk 2 on release day. Other memories include playing the amazing Shenmue(Thinking of the game just makes me sad) as well as the Euro version of 2. Resident Evil 2/3/Veronica. Stupid Invaders, cannon Spike, Gunbird 2, Expendable,MvC2, the great gun games (HOTD, Confidential Mission), Jet Ste Radio, Never finishing Dino Crisis though I got to the T Rex final boss. The Awful ECW(another thing that makes me sad now that its gone) games and the awful Royal Rumble WWF game. Fire Pro D!!!!, Guilty Gear, the Neo Geo fighter ports, loads of great Shmups(Ikaruga), NFL2K2 with my roomies. Virtua Tennis and Mastering Crazy Taxi 1. Love the Dreamcast

Probably the time I beat Soul Calibur during break while working at Toys R Us for the holidays. Or maybe the time me and my ex-girlfriend(she wasn't an ex at the time) were beating each other up in Power Stones. No, I got it. It was that time at Otakon when I got beat in the Soul Calibur tournament.....by a girl......with a mullet.....and a mustache:?

I'd say the time I was playing Shenmue all day and the GOD DAMN THING RESET! Then it started reseting all the time! Then it would reset when ever it felt like it? It's had a mind of it's own. AAAARRRGGHH!!! I threw that thing in the trash and just recently got another one. Hope the doesn't happen again or... watch out SEGA.

My favorite Dreamcast moment was when I finally beat my uncle, who incidentally introduced me to video games on the 5200, at NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC. The whole time he complained that Shaq wasn't supposed to do a somersault before dunking a flaming basketball because that never happens in the NBA.

Oh, and using SegaNet to view porn ranks up there too.

The Dreamcast really revitalized my interest in games; I was a DC hater when it came out in '99, but I bought one in 2004 when I was on a retro kick. It quickly became my favorite system of all time. Just a blast...

I remember beating Power Stone with all the characters, tracking down a PAL copy of Shenmue in hopes of continuing my save game in the sequel (which I never did), playing a ton of Crazy Taxi, downloading and burning Propeller Arena...

I think my number one DC memory was when I gave my friend a Pelican steering wheel, since I didn't want to ship it out on eBay, and it broke his console...so I went out in my backyard and just whooped the living shit out of the wheel for killing all the controller ports in the 'cast.

Halo 2 came out not long after that, but 2004 was the summer of the Dreamcast. Best system ever; wish I had supported it when it was alive and kickin'.

Oh, and NBA showtime...I won $40 off my friend (I think a total of like $80 when the dust cleared)...man that game cheated like shit, but was so much fun. Jet Grind Radio was fuckin' awesome too.

Since I just started selling my DC collection, it's a good time for a trip down memory lane, in on particular order:

1) The motorcycle scene near the end of Shenmue 1.
2) The first time I played Phantasy Star Online with one friend in California and one friend in Chicago (and one random guy we didn't know).
3) Seeing Sol Dimensias when I closed my eyes at 3am because I had played so much PSO.
4) Playing Grandia 2 in the living room, with my wife doing a puzzle. She was getting annoyed with hearing "Golden Hammer Crash!" every two minutes... but it's been a running joke between us ever since
5) FINALLY beating the boss on SF 3: Third Strike after dozens of attempts. I nearly broke the controller but finally did it.
6) Playing NFL2k in an RV, en route to a friends' wedding. My and my opponent were both drunk, and when he continued to hit Randy Moss for 80 yard TD passes I got really pissed and punched a hole in the wall (hey, it's better than breaking a controller!)
7) Walking around the docks in Shenmue 1, watching the pigeons scatter as I walked up to them. It really struck me how much love and detail was put into the game.
8) Buying it! I didn't preorder, but when a friend brought his to work with NFL2k and Soul Calibur I scoured Chicago for a week before finding one. I actually bought those two games before I found the console!
9) Arriving in Hong Kong in Shenmue 2 - watching the credits fade up, looking at the scenery, I knew I was in for something special. It's hard to pick a favorite Shenmue 2 moment, but right from the start it was awesome.
10) Annual trip through Zombie Revenge on Halloween. I don't play my DC too much anymore, but I do pull it out for that Holiday ritual.

Great topic!! LOL. I love my dreamcast. i've had it since early 2000, so good. My absolute favorite memory with it was my first time playing through sonic adventure. My sister and I got it in the evening on a friday night and we had it beat without sleeping by saturday morning XD. So much fun!

I have a lot of fond DC memories, and I've said many times on this site that I think this is the most underrated system ever.
Too many people never gave this system the chance it deserved.

My favorite moments:

1) The times myself, my buddies and my dad all spent playing Sega Marine Fishing, beating every challenge, and unlocking every single item in game. Fun times.

2) Actually getting to play Propeller Arena on my DC finally.

3) Shenmue was a great experience, really spent a lot of time with that game.

4) All these years later, hauling out the DC to play Looney Toons racing against my son.

@BHvrd - I see you're an SWG guy! What server do you play on? I'm a Day 1 vet myself, I play on Wanderhome mostly (it's pretty much dead with the free CTS, I'll be parachuting to Starsider probably)

Tons of fun was had with the good ol' Dreamcast:

1. My buddies and I played the shit out of San Francisco Rush 2049! Forget the racing, we were all about the 4 player split screen battle modes! We would play every day after classes and work...late into the night.

2. We also played the crap out of Toy Commander! Again, 4 player split screen! We also worked to unlock more vehicles and maps!

3. Had a wisdom tooth pulled. After the ordeal, went home and played Airforce Delta for the rest of the night while zonked out on Vicodin. Haha!

4. I repeatedly beat my shit talking friends in Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Street Fighter Alpha 3! Did this for hours until I slowly let them win...

5. Playing Seaman for the first time while my wife (then girlfriend) watched! I love that game...

6. Seeing Sonic Adventure running for the first time. Man that game had a great soundtrack.

Playing all the KICK ASS 4 player games with friends and family like Chu Chu Rocket, Power Stone 2, Rush, Worms, Gauntlet Legends, Bomberman, and more I cant think of right now.

Also the 1 player experience was second to none. My first real online gaming experience was Speed Devils Online. Damn I played that game for hours and hours and hours. SOOO underrated. Space Channel 5, Rez, Sonic, Skies of Arcadia, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set....

Dreamcast was the last system I really had that much fun with :(

-Playing Beats of Rage for the first time. It's a hell of a good time no matter how many times you play it, but the first time was really something.

-Blue Stinger. I don't care what anyone says, I LOVE THIS GAME. Everything about it stole my gamer heart.

-Phantasy Star Online. My GOD, the hours and hours this game stole from me.....

-Street Fighter 3: Third Strike. Nuff said.

Dreamcast was my first "modern" system of the PS2/Xbox/GC era. Traded a Colecovision for it, actually, and have many good memories of it.

1. Sonic Adventure - I know it's not necessarily a fan favorite, but I, on the other hand, never cared much for the 2-D platformers from which Sonic originated. I played this one all the way through and enjoyed how it had a sort of RPG feel to it. And yes, I'm a fan of Big the Cat, too.

2. Shenmue - Loved the immersive quality of the game and the feel of contemporary Japanese culture as it was presented. You either like Shenmue or you don't. I liked it.

3. Watching my son discover the feature of Soul Calibur where you can edit the intro movie. He spent many hours playing with that, and showed quite the sense of humor by substituting Lizardman for Sophitia in the scene where she throws her hair back while standing in a field (link...between 1:13 and 1:23) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uos6AFq0uD).

4. The first time I used StellaDC (Atari 2600 emulator). It was the first time I'd ever done console emulation on another console, as opposed to a PC, and just thought it was very cool.

I have many of these. Here they are in chronological order, as best as I can remember.

1.) Renting a Japanese DC and Sonic Adventure months before release. The graphics were amazing, and the game was too. This had me really excited for the DC's release.

2.) Going with my father to pick up the Dreamcast at Midnight 9.9.99, my first and only "midnight launch." I have since vowed to not attend any other midnight launches unless Sega reenters the hardware market.

3.) Finishing Sonic Adventure and playing as Super Sonic. I also enjoyed countless hours of Soul Calibur and Hydro Thunder. The US DC launch title lineup never ceases to amaze me.

4.) Signing up with AT&T to get my DC online and free keyboard. I think I cancelled after a month or so, as there wasn't much to do online with the DC only a month after release. That keyboard would come in handy later.

5.) Waiting forever for Rainbow Six to come out. I had this on pre-order for a while and I just remember it took forever to finally get released. I was disappointed with the game too. It was over my head; I blame part of that on the hard control scheme. This isn't necessarily a fond memory, but one that definitely stands out.

6.) ODCM (Official Dreamcast Magazine) - This magazine I thoroughly enjoyed, and probably the only one I would ever read cover to cover. Not only was the content in the magazine good, but the included demo discs were great as well. After they closed up, my subscription transfered to Next Gen. After Next Gen closed up, my subcription transferred to PSM. PSM was terrible.

7.) Snow days playing Dreamcast in the basement. Worms Armageddon and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater stand out as titles I would play. Tony Hawk was just amazing when it came out - especially on the Dreamcast.

8.) Phantasy Star Online. If you were around to experience this when it was new, you know exactly what I am talking about. If you weren't, you missed out on an amazing experience. It was a very different experience than online PC gaming, or Xbox Live. I can't say what exactly it was, but there was something surreal about it. I put hundreds of hours into this.

9.) 4-player dreamcast games. Rush 2049, Worms Armageddon/Worms World Party and Virtua Tennis were some of the most played.

10.) Playing Dreamcast with my younger sister. We never had too much in common, but she did enjoy playing games with me from time to time. This is my favorite memory of them all. I remember playing Mars Matrix, Rush 2049 and 102 Dalmations with her. There were more, but I can't think of them right now.

11.) Getting Sonic Adventure 2 the day it came out and finishing it within 24 hours.

12.) Buying a second Dreamcast system, just so I could get the Sega Smash Pack.

13.) Hunting for games while the DC was dying. I was always on the look out for good deals on good games, and dirt cheap crappy games. Highlights include $15 for Canon Spike, $10 for Bangai-O, $15 for Gigawing 2, $5 for the Resident Evil games, $2 VGA Box, 2x $5 Top Max arcade sticks with Fighting Force 2 (both arcade sticks were faulty). Seeing the DC go was sad, but it did let me get many more games. Playing games on the VGA box was somewhat of a hassle, but it looked amazing.

14.) Getting Alien Front Online and Grandia II from my sister for my birthday. This happened after the DC was pretty much dead, and prices had fell quite a bit but not much was left. I gave her a list of what I already had, and she managed find two good games.

This thread is making me jealous. Shenmue's been mentioned many times, and I've yet to play it. I've got the game discs and they're in good condition, but for some reason they consistently crash my DC. I can't play for more than 5 minutes without it freezing. The discs look fine and the DC doesn't crash with any other games.

I'm jealous.

Im going to add another Shenmue memory.

It was one of the first games I got. I played Shenmue 5-6 hours straight with no VMU. I was dead tired so my dad ran out and bought a VMU memory unti so I could save the game and goto bed!

The memories of getting lost in the world that Shenmue created. Doing the forklift job, running around town talking to people in the shops... It was one of the best experiences playing a game I have ever had.

Additional DC memories include playing Code Veronica the first time. Excellent.

I have 2, actually.

Right after I got my Dreamcast I got Sonic Adventure back in 99'. I immediately rushed home and got my sister and we hammered through the entire game in one night. So much fun :)

My second one is trying to show my grandpa how to play Sega Bass Fishing. Funny is an understatement.

I guess I'm not a huge DC fan and only got a console after it was dead. My favorite memory of it was when I played Mars Matrix so much, I was the only one who found a copy so it was a popular title with my friends.

Memories:

1. Being blown away by NFL 2K, which positively destroyed Madden and made my brother get his own Dreamcast
2. Watching the VMU in Virtua Tennis display the game from the TV in wireframe on the VMU screen
3. Playing my first games with the VGA box (Headhunter and Rez UK imports) and being blown away
4. Wishing for a second analog stick nearly every day
5. Hearing ToeJam & Earl III had been moved to the Xbox after being in development for Dreamcast
6. Buying my local GameStop's only copy of NHL 2K2 (last U.S. title) on release day for posterity.

Funny this thread bumped up, as just last night I hooked up my Dreamcast for the first time in a long time. I somehow got the thing working in RGB about a two years ago but haven't had it hooked up since. Last night I got it out again and of course, the first thing I did was stick in Shenmue (European Import version) I too have always intended to finish the game a second time and transfer all the toys to the european published sequel (which I bought about six years ago for waaay too much money).

Anyway, add me to the Shenmue chorus. I still love it. Still get that tingly "existing elsewhere for a little while" feeling. I'm actually going to play through as slowly as I can and try to get every damn little toy, raise a healthy kitty, and, of course, um, oh yeah, avenge my father.

Although I only played the DC a few times, when it was already a dead console, I do have good memories of playing Crazy Taxy 2 with the wife and my brother-in-law all afternoon. I would also kick his ass really good on SF Alpha 3 or 3rd Strike everytime we went visiting. :D

I don't get to have that kind of fun times anymore, since we moved from our hometown, and live really far away from our families now. The guy no longer has the console, anyway. I guess growing up just sucks...

My favourite DC memory is playing the hell out of Capcom vs SNK 2 and Chu Chu Rocket.

Actually my burnt Dreamcast is already dead but i've replaced it later with a used one!!

I admit i've spend hundreds of hours playing Marvel Vs Capcom and Sega Bass Fishing(using the special controller included in the game which is great!)..:above me: For me that's one of the best gaming experiences in my life!!

1. The 2k series. It'll always be better than Madden, and I hope the rumor is true that they don't renew the Madden/EA contract.

2. House of the Dead 2. My brother and I would ALWAYS play this amazing game together. We would laugh at the awful voice acting and proceed to beat the game multiple times.

3. Power Stone 2. I loved this game, my friends and I played this as opposed to Super Smash Bros.

4. Marvel vs. Capcom. Not a great fighting game in terms of mechanics and such, but I still loved playing it. Especially since you could be Mega Man.

Running away from the orca in Sonic Adventure.

That is probably the most memorable symbol of the Dreamcast's launch.

Scurrying around town to buy one on 9.9.99.

Playing the hell out of Soul Calibur and Hydro Thunder in the middle of a hurricane soon afterwards.

The immense number of quality games coming out EVERY WEEK before the PS2 hit.

Playing Chu Chu Rocket over 56K at all hours of the night so I didn't tie up my phone line.

CRAZY TAXI.

Buying imports of F355 Challenge, Shuotoku Battle 2, Jet Set Radio, etc. to get them first.

Foolishly selling it after I stood in line for a PS2.

Buying a brand new one last week on Amazon and re-building my collection, plus the later stuff I missed like Daytona, Bangai-O, etc.

After playing through a bunch of stuff this week, I've really come to the conclusion that the DC was, at least for those of us who have been playing games since the Atari days, gaming's last stand. The death of skill-based gaming from the PS2->on had kind of killed video games for me.

I've owned every console since except the Wii, and except for a few games I bought for nostalgia's sake (Ready 2 Rumble, etc.) it all holds up amazingly well. I was worried that shelling out the bucks to buy this stuff again I'd be disappointed due to viewing that era through rose tinted glasses, but except for obvious control niggles in certain games after getting used to dual analog, all the games pretty much still rule.

I also didn't realize how awesome JGR was compared to Jet Set Radio Future, only having played the Japanese version of the original, so a lot of the finer points of scoring were lost on me. Why they took out the scoring in the sequel is beyond me.

Well, 9-9-09 will be upon us shortly (the 10 year reunion). I for one will be playing some Dreamcast that day! Who's with me??
