So more specifically I mean the early music of the 70's. And I know that the video game hype really didn't start untell around 1977 but I truly believe 70's progressive rock is a great companion with video games. What with all the extremely new electronic technology, (analog keyboards and sound devices, ambient retro sounds), "fantastical," stage performances and an overall Dungeons and Dragons kind of atmosphere, what more could you want?

Well thats just my opinion, but what about all of you? Whats your opinion on music that isn't the actuall game music? Is retro gaming a world 100% of its own or can different levels of entertainment meet together?

And also check out this artword by Roger Dean. This artword is for the album covers of YES but he also did some video game artwork I belive.

Gotta love the Atari 2600 Label Maker. (http://www.labelmaker2600.com/)

Oh, and I've always thought that Antartica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZ1e4uAGtlY) would go really well with that one snowy race track in F-Zero.

Can't go wrong with some classic Tom Sawyer.

I love to listen to the Allman Brothers while playing racing titles. Specifically older arcade titles.

Midnight Rider is always awesome. But, I have found that Jessica is great when played with Outrun. The music is perfect. It just syncs up in my brain. I actually play better when listening to the song. Not to put down the genius that is Magical Sound Shower and the rest of the OST.

Newer racing titles I usually listen to faster stuff.

This thread reminds me of some Dark Side of the Rainbow/Oz shit. Good stuff!

The day I get a Pac-Man machine, I'm gonna play it and loop 'Don't You Want Me?' by the Human League until I drool..

I dunno about progressive rock, the level based structure and limited memory early games wasn't exactly the optimal platform for that kind of music. Maybe in computer rpgs but that's because both had medieval themes (king crimson).

Personally I associate 8-bit gaming specifically with new wave, synth pop and some industrial music but you can hear a lot of classic rock/metal influence in games franchises like Mega Man, Thunder Force, TMNT and sonic.

In the 90s they certainly did meet in games like Wipeout, Gran Turismo with "real" bands getting featured in the games.
