View Full Version : SNES Arcade Sticks...

Alright so I've recently been looking up arcade sticks for various consoles that I feel I would benefit having them. So far the choices have been easy (the only difficult one being me thinking if I want to blow nearly $100 on a Hori EX2 Stick for the 360). However the Super Nintendo, which is my focus honestly, has left me with a bit of a choice.
Having researched it I've found there are two choices: the Super Nintendo Advantage, and the Fighter Stick SN. Both can be easily found and neither are bank breakers. Aside from the fact that the Advantage is absolutely butt ugly they look comfortable and ergonomic.
My question is for anyone who's used them: which is the better stick to get? I suspect the Advantage is a durable piece of quality hardware since it's official and I know the NES Advantage is a damn fine stick. Or does the Fighter Stick SN blow it out of the water? Or am I missing any that are available beyond these two?
I'm just full of questions lately. :)

Sometimes (like when searching for things like SN in it) the search is a bit wonky. Google works though. :D Hope this helps you.
The biggest problems with the Advantage is the button layout. The problem with both is microswitches... If that doesn't bother you, then either one will work fine. They're equally cheap and readily available.

If you already own a PS1/2 arcade stick, another option would be picking up Tototek's (http://tototek.com/) PSX-->SNES adapter; they're about 15$, and I've heard good things about them.

Yes...doing a search would have been the logical option. *slaps forehead*
What do you mean when you say microswitches?
EDIT: No PSX/PS2 stick yet. Those will likely be the next to get bought if I decide not to screw with the Hori 360 stick.

Yeah, I'm a little puzzled about how microswitches could possibly be a problem, unless they are of poor quality.
The CPS fighter isn't a bad stick either, although it's nowhere near the quality of a real arcade stick.
Also, there's no reason to pay anywhere near $100 for an EX2.
They go for as little as $40 at some stores, and I believe I payed about $60CDN for mine.

I'd certainly like to find it in stores but they're not around here. Even online it's a bit of a challenge to find them either in stock or at a good price. I'm not committing myself to paying that much for it anyways. I know it's a fighting stick but I would have liked a second joystick for Robotron, Geometry Wars, etc.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I'll pick up the Advantage since I know it's going to be built tough.

I'm a fighter stick SN user, myself. Got an SNES advantage, but the button layout is just too crappy for most games, particularly any fighting game.
Only thing I can complain about with the SN is that the stick takes some getting used to.

I don't play fighting games so that doesn't make much difference to me.

In that case I'd go with the Advantage, it was a great joystick for general gaming and ASCII is known for quality products, I have two myself. I'd also look for the Capcom Fighter Power stick, it was pretty good. Not being interested in fighting games saves you the trouble of looking for the top notch C&L controls Championship joystick.

I noticed the Capcom stick looked pretty good. My passion is for shooters and classic arcade games like Pac-Man, Joust etc. The SNES doesn't have the greatest collection of these particular types of games but it's not like I'm paying big bucks for a stick anyways so it's a worthy enough investment.
Thanks for all the input folks. Very helpful stuff.

I'd recommend the Advantage for shooters, it's got a carbon dot style switch that's nice and soft, and the autofire is easier to work with. (switches for each button) but for stuff like Pacman, you may be interested in the Capcom stick's 4/8 way joystick settings.

I would bypass both of those and suggest getting a C & L Stick. Those contain real arcade parts and it is definitely the best SNES stick around.

Well honestly I do more Pacman playing on the 360 now anyways. Regular Pacman controls like crap with the 360 controller though so it makes things frustrating.

I've looked around online for the C&L stick but can't find it. Is there a specific name beyond C&L or is it just hard to come across?

It's harder to come by, but they exist. C & L Championship Joystick.
