Well, I suppose it's better than an add on. Um....yeah: http://www.gamepro.com/article/news/208449/3d-playstation-3-games-in-2009/
The only good thing I could see coming out of this is if they release a 3D version of Jaws on bluray. Well, maybe thats not a good thing but it can't be no worse than Contra: Legacy of War in 3D on the PS1.

I dont care what gimmick is thrown at me. In the end I want a good game and not overhyped promises. A crappy game in 3D is still a crappy game. Let us hope that they make a good use of the technology instead of one that sucks

This is seems interesting. I wonder if you will need a 3-D ready tv to take advantage of this?

Aren't games already in 3d? Why even bother with this? Why don't they just develop some more games already rather than attempt to provide some gimmick.

3D PS3 on a 120Hz 1080P HDTV via HDMI 1.3? No Wii, 360?

Not everything is a gimmick.
If they actually release this, and it doesn't use red/blue glasses, I'll be all over it. Even if it does use those glasses I'll have a hard time passing it by.
also, I'm guessing this would be a software upgrade? Seems pretty shitty to do to folks already with a PS3.

The article does stay "stereoscopic" 3D, which uses the glasses with polarized lenses instead of the blue and red glasses. Although the graphic for the article incorrectly uses a pair of anaglyph glasses.
Here's a Wikipedia article explaining the differences in 3D technologies, for anyone interested.

It seems that this is a step in the right direction if they are going the stereoscopic route.

So...it's big news that the PS3 is finally doing something the Sega Master System did 20 years ago?
Actually, in the reasearch I was doing a while back...this seemed to be the "next frontier" of gaming. As with everything, we shall see how well it is implemented to see if it is more than a gimmick.

Agreed. Though if they can provide good games and 3D then why not, sounds cool.

When I went to Fry's today, they had a new display of a "3D" monitor, showing some game footage. I checked it out for a little while (they had a box full of those glasses). It was okay. It did appear to have more depth; much more convincingly three-dimensional compared to regular displays. But it came at a cost -- it didn't look as sharp. The 3D effect seems to cause a small amount of blurring. It didn't really look bad, but I would think that with prolonged sessions, my eyes would strain trying to focus.

so Sony is so desperate to sell the PS3 now, they're gonna give it a new 3D upgrade? gee, maybe Nintendo will re-release the Virtual Boy to original specs in 3 colors to compete with it! if they do, I'll buy that and Sony can blow me

Desperation? Re-releasing the Virtual Boy? Blowjobs?
You're upset.

Upset at his recent lack of blowjobs, perhaps?

I hope videogaming never goes 3d beyond the occasional gimmicks we've seen for years. A significant portion of their userbase probably can't see in 3d. I'm legally blind in one eye, so this stuff is useless and unusable for me. And I'm sure I'm far from the only one.
Though it sure would save me a lot of money if it ever did go 3d. :)

Um, this seems too stupid to be true. :hmm:
Then again, it's a Sony! LOL

I can't think of any games that would benefit by going 3D (maybe it's just me)

I'm sure the effect would be cool for some stuff...I've used the stereoscopic glasses on a PC to play Thief years ago, and it worked pretty well. Trouble, is, did you see the developer that's been entrusted with handling this stuff? Spongebob is on their resume, and the first game they're using it in is an adaptation of a James Cameron movie. Destination: bargain bin.

...maybe he can look up Veronica since she's not dating Dante from the Quikstop anymore! I hear she has sucked 37 dicks!
