View Full Version : How many controllers have YOU broken in a fit of self righteous rage?

I've broken two: an NES pad back in the day, and a sixaxis during the TV station level in Call of Duty 4. I admit though that if I were more thorough with venting my dissatisfaction, I'd have a few more to add to the list. Controllers are pretty durable, it turns out.
So: how many controllers have you broken, and why?

I can honestly say Zero. None. Zip.
Have I slammed them down or slammed my fist against them? Yes. Hah I found out if you hit the center of a Dreamcast controller hard enough and there is a VMU in the first slot, you can fire it out a good distance.

0. I've thrown them down hard on the floor but never broke one.

Years ago my parents would wrap the wire around my PS1 controllers to save space, but over time one of the wires got so worn out it wouldn't work.
I have gotten pretty angry playing games, but my controllers held up pretty well over the years despite banging and throwing.

I have thrown my fair share of controllers but only broke 1 and it was a 360 controller. It seems like I get more angry about games now then I did back in the day. Stupid Halo.

I have thrown a few controllers in anger during my youth… but none had ever broken before. My SNES controller from then had a tab break inside and the cord had come out more. And my Genesis 6 button controller has a piece of plastics rattling inside.
BUT, I had recently thrown my Xbox 360 controller when I was playing Bionic Commando Rearmed. The dpad on that controller is pure garbage.
I grew up with many anger issues as I had social disorder and I took out frustrations in video games controllers when I would play poor.
These days I am a little better at controlling anger and frustrations but the 360 dpad pushed me to a place I had not been in a long time :embarrassed:

I can't even count. 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1, Xbox....I've broken them all. Smashed my first 360 controller a couple weeks ago (a black Elite) playing Call Of Duty 4 online.
I'm not an out of control person either. In fact, the only time I get really mad is when I play games (and tennis...I've broken at least a dozen racquets over the years). Maybe it's because I bottle it up most of the day and it all comes out when I play. I'm always respectful of my friends controllers when I play on their systems though. :|

None. I usually stand up, punch the couch/bed/something nearby, swear at the TV or sometimes a combination of those things... but I've never been so pissed at a game that I've destroyed a controller. I usually take a break before I get that annoyed.

I don't think I have broken any in anger. The wires breaking after being wrapped to save space, however... That broke a few.

You guys must really wrap those wires tight!
I've broken dozens of controllers and keyboards, but usually it was because they were worn out and wouldn't function properly.
I did tear a dualshock controller in half playing Doom on PS1. Those Ultimate Doom levels are just heinous.

Multiple PS2 controllers...I remember slamming them down and blowing them apart, then gathering up the pieces and assembling them back together. They eventually bit the dust but survived through a few tosses...
I broke an Xbox 360 controller playing Gears of War; I was really good at the game for awhile and then couldn't hit shit all of a sudden and I freaked out and threw it against my bed. Toast. Still suck at Gears of War online...
And a bunch of my controllers have been broken by my friends; not through physical attacks, but just through carelessness. Shit like the LB or B button is stuck into the controller and takes a mammoth amount of effort to press. Sucks.

I haven't broken any. My wife however has broken two PS2 controllers playing the Katamari games with that high speed charge move. She would play it for HOURS. I'd be in another room and "WHACK-WHACK-WHACK-WHACK-WHACK-WHACK-WHACK-WHACK-WHACK!!!! WHACK-WHACK-WHACK-WHACK-WHACK-WHACK-WHACK-WHACK!!!"
She brought me the shattered hulk of my favorite PS2 controller... "It stopped working... I don't know why."

None, controller cost money, hehehe.
My older brother is notorious for busting 360 controllers though.

None, I really don't get angry when I play games, frustration never goes beyond a small curse or running my fingers through my hair or something. I do notice though that most guys cannot control anger levels while playing games, almost every boyfriend I've had, including my current one, gets pretty pissy if gaming doesn't go his way.

I have broken several thru the years of playing. From NES up to PS2. Once the current gen came out and I saw price tags of $50 for the current wireless controllers I wised up. I cannot afford to break a $50 controller.
On a side note though... I kicked a hole in my closet door once when I was younger playing college footballs national championship on Genesis.
I also threw the disk for Madden 07 for the Wii across the room because the motion sensor wasnt picking up my passes and I was constantly getting sacked.
I think I may have an anger issue...

None. What kind of idiot throws away their hard earned money during a moment of stupidity? There are much better (more cost effective) ways to vent.

I agree, I can't imagine doing this. But a surprising number of people are childish enough to do this, there's always no shortage of people with plenty of stories to tell when this topic comes up once or twice a year at the forums I visit. Provides for entertaining reading, though I can't imagine getting mad at a electronic game enough to ever do it myself.

I broke a nearby remote control. I leave my controllers out of it.

30 years of gaming, one intentionally broken controller. Thank you, final race of Excitebike 64.
I also bit into a few Atari joysticks. You may have some of my handiwork in your controller collection right now.

I would throw NES controllers around when I was a kid, but I haven't done that in years now. Good thing NES controllers are so durable. =)

I've broken...a sixaxis during the TV station level in Call of Duty 4.
On veteran difficulty? The checkpoint inside the studio (with all the desks and TV's) is in my personal "Top 10" most difficult FPS sequences ever.
Anyway, I haven't broken any controllers, but I did break my computer desk in 1989 playing Ninja Gaiden (NES). The eagles had bounced me off the cliff for the 100th time and I smashed my fist into the top of the desk. The whole thing practically collapsed in front of me. Granted it was one of those cheap particle board things...but it was definitely ruined from then on. Oh, the RAGE.

My R2 and L2 buttons sucked on a PS2 controller I onced owned. One day I got pissed off for some reason and just took the controller outside and beat it against the sidewalk. Then picked the millions of pieces of it up off the ground and threw it in the trash.

I actually don't suffer from angry controller syndrome. If a game makes me angry, why in the heck am I still playing it? There's far too many good games out there to play.

None, but someone has to explain to me how it's possible to internally break the d-pad on a PlayStation controller. I've gotten three or four controllers like that, and it totally perplexes me. The good thing, at least, is that since only four directions stick out of the controller, a d-pad that's broken on the inside can still work perfectly as long as each chunk stays in place. Probably screws up fighters in which you want to roll your thumb along the pad, but for less demanding games like RPGs, I can use the broken pads just fine.

I've punched the hell out of a few couch cushions, but never really broke anything. I was taught as a kid that if I started to get angry at the game, just turn it off for a while and do something else... which has saved by DS from being snapped in half after failing the final stage of Elite Beat Agents AGAIN...

Yup, and I still hate that level. Bullet Hell FPS? No thanks.

Fortunately, none.
Though, I have had a few SNES pads and Dual Shocks that have needed replacement due to excessive (but not abusive) use.

Truth. I've never thrown a controller (I happen to collect controllers...). I'll just turn the game off and come back later.
None, I've never gotten that angry at a game. I also don't have the money to waste.

When I'm angry with a game, I generally will not put the abuse on my controller or console, I actually punch anything within striking range. I've punched a wall, the ground, a couch cushion, a chair, and once I head butted a door frame. not very healthy, but my gaming supplies never complain.

I've never broken a controller out of rage. I've had an N64 and GameCube controller break from use, though.
When I get angry at a video game, I take my anger out by punching my bed 50 million times, because I know that if I break my controller, my parents are going to make me buy another one myself. LOL

Not due to a fit of self righteous rage but....... about 5 PS2 controllers. This is due to when a game requires you to tap a button, I DON'T tap. I tap and press really fast and hard causing the controller button(s) to stick or break. This only happened with my PS2 controllers though. Thank God I am still on my original PS3 controller. :) :) LOL LOL

In the early-mid 90s I had a C&L Controls Championship Joystick for SNES, I got irate playing... I think it was Fatal Fury 2, and smashed it with my fist, cracking the case.
Now I have a Neo Geo MVS for Fatal Fury, and the metal control panel will stand up to considerably more fist smashing than a plastic joystick. :D
I've never broken a controller out of anger.

Slammed one of my 360 controllers on the ground twice, all it did was fly the battery pack off and crack a little bit. But it still works great. I can now say that MS makes *SOME* good hardware.

A few. A couple of dualshock 2s bit the dust thanks to Soul Calibur 3, and one of my Wiimotes is currently only used as a port for the classic controller thanks to Mario Galaxy (no prizes for guessing which mission). One of my Guitar Hero guitars nearly got the Pete Townshend treatment thanks to the final battle in GH3, too.

Surprisingly the two games that have made me throw controlllers are Wii(Boom Blox and No More Heroes) games. Its really really stupid but either have broken....yet. I actually have a Gamecube controller made up completely bad parts(I have replaced the analog sticks on a lot of them, due to hours of intense Smash Bros playing and not wanting to pay for new/used wavebirds) that I put together just to throw.

I've broken or worn out a bunch of controllers through general use. When I was a kid I and my friends played a lot of NES. We were also poor kids so we couldn't really buy new controllers when they wore out and I remember having a drawer full of nearly worn out ones collected from around the neighborhood and searching through them for the ones that still kinda worked well enough to play.
But I've only actually broken one, the Dualshock I bought for my PSX. I was playing an early outdoor level in Tenchu 2 and trying to master the stealthy approach when the frustration of having to continually restart the stage only to screw up near the same part overwhelmed me and I just snapped. I was sitting on the floor and I slammed my Dualshock on it several times in quick succession. Unfortunately I cracked the case and from then on if I was holding my hands just right I would get a little electric shock when it rumbled, a reminder of my loss of control. We actually had a shocky SNES controller, too, but that was because it broke legitimately and we did something wrong in an attempt to fix it.
I do get mad at games, but I rarely hit things, I mostly just yell obscenities and threats at the things that are getting in my way.
