I got a PSP off a friend of mine for $40, and it works, but it needs a new battery.
But I'm not sure which kind it needs, because I don't know if it's the newer or older model.
I think it's the older one, but I can't tell for sure.
any help would be much appreciated.

The original has a textured black backside and the battery/opposite side has a slight outward curve. The PSP 2000/3000 both have glossy flat backsides.

Thanks.
I think that means I've got an older one.
Also, I took out the battery, and on the PSP it says: "PSP-1001".

You can also find the model number on the sticker that's stuck on the bottom edge of the PSP.

yup. Now I just gotta buy the battery and a battery cover.
And then a good game. I was thinking Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron.

No. Renegade Squadron is a good game. The PSP also has a ton of other good games.
My favorites are Gundam Battle Universe and Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles.
Anyways. I have a black phat PSP which I got almost a year after the PSP came out. Then I have a white slim Darth Vader PSP. I also have a mint green slim PSP. All have custom firmware on them.
