I've tried playing it on my PS2 and PS3 but it won't get past the loading screen. I am able to select the difficulty but after the footprints show up on the screen, the screen goes black and I can hear the music playing but it just freezes there.
I have had the disc cleaned and it looks perfect.
Does anyone have an idea of what might be the problem?
Thanks

Probably have a top-scratch on the disc. unfixable.

Top scratches on DVDs aren't bad as they are on CDs, unless it's a huge crevice.
Check Sony's compatibility chart on the web-site to see if there is something up. A coworker mentioned one of the Silent Hills had a huge issue on his original 80 gig model.

I did check that too and there don't seem to be any.

I've also tried it on a PS2 and it still does the same thing. Also according to Sony's website it works fine on the PS3 model that I have.

Have you compared the Silent Hill 2 disc to another PS2 game? Where did you get the game?
A couple things to try:
It could be a copied disc. PS2 games come in two different disc types that I'm aware of: the 'blue' disc and the regular old DVD style. If it's a normal DVD disc, check and see if there's a PS logo watermark on it embedded in the data layer. There should also be a bunch of hologram PS logos around the hole in the middle. If there aren't any logos, you might have a copy on your hands(which wouldn't work in a unmodded PS2). If it's blue, I don't know what to look for.
Alternately,
Hold the disc up to a strong incandescent light bulb with the label facing you and look for tiny, tiny pin pricks in the DVD; you should be able to see light through them. If that's the case, you might have an unfortunate and rare case of bit rot on your hands. The game is dead: replace it.
I can't think of anything else it could be, but I'm sure someone on DP has the answer.

It does have the holograms around it so I think it's a real copy.
I'll have to try out the light trick to see if that's the case.
Thanks for the suggestions.

If it's loading but won't play past a certain point I'd say it sounds like a deep scratch. I recently had that problem with one of my Xbox dvds. Since you still have your PS2 try running the disc diagnostic on the disc from the PS2's main menu. It may help indicate the problem.

What the - where is this option? I've never seen it on my slim PS2.
