Six French journalists detained on arrival at Los Angeles, sent back to France

Reporters Without Borders today protested against the detention of six French journalists on arrival a week ago at Los Angeles international airport to cover a video games trade show and their forcible repatriation after being held at the airport for more than 24 hours.

"These journalists were treated like criminals - subjected to several body searches, handcuffed, locked up and fingerprinted," Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Robert Ménard complained in a letter to the US ambassador to Paris, Howard Leach.

Ménard urged the ambassador to press for an investigation and to ensure that the journalists will have no problems the next time they travel to the United States. He also suggested that it should be clarified whether or not journalists travelling to the United States need a specific press visa. "As things stand, the decisions taken by airport security officials appear to have been arbitrary if not discriminatory," Ménard said in his letter.

The six journalists arrived at Los Angeles airport in two groups a day apart. The first group consisted of Alexandre Alfonsi of Télé 7 Jours, Stéphanie Pic of Télé Poche and Michel Perrot of TV Hebdo, who arrived at 2 p.m. on 10 May without press visas. Pic and Perrot passed through immigration without any problem, but Alfonsi was denied access to US territory on the grounds that he lacked the required visa.

Pic and Perrot tried in vain to find out from airport officials what had happened to their colleague. All three journalists were then detained and held for a total of 26 hours, which included a night in the cells of a US immigration detention centre.

They were subjected to interrogation sessions and six body searches. They were handcuffed while being moved from one place to another, and they were fingerprinted. One official told Alfonsi he would not be able to return to the United States again. They were put on a flight for France at around 4 p.m. the next day and were not able to recover their passports until the aeroplane made a stopover in Amsterdam.

The other group, which suffered an almost identical fate, consisted of Thierry Falcoz, editor in chief of Game One cable television, and two of his cameramen, Laurent Patureau and Alex Gorsky. They arrived at Los Angeles international airport at around 3 p.m. on 11 May. Falcoz and Gorsky passed through immigration without a problem but Patureau was stopped by an official who said he needed a press visa.

When Patureau's two colleagues protested, all three were detained. After being held for nine hours in an airport waiting room they were taken to a US immigration detention centre where they were held overnight in a cell. They were subjected to repeated body searches and interrogation. They were handcuffed when taken from one place to another, and they were fingerprinted. Finally, they were put on a flight back to France at around 6 p.m. the next day.

But why is it just the French? Assuming this is based on opposition to the Iraqi war, why aren't the Germans and the Russians, who also opposed it, being vilified as much?

This story smells fishy. I can't believe the agents would be so blantant in their detaining of the French journalists. Something else must have happened that hasn't been reported.

That was my thought exactly. I don't think we're getting the whole story. The actions taken by the officials sounds quite reprehensible, but I can't shake that feeling that it might have been justified, and they aren't telling us everything.

Mayhem here...

A similar thing happened to the friend of a mate of mine, going to E3 to cover the show. He made the mistake of saying he was a journalist without having the appropriate work visa. He was detained, searched and then deported back to England last week just before I came over here.

Seems the airport security over there get rather power hungry knowing they can expect plenty of people arriving for E3 perhaps without the proper paperwork to let them in. It's not just about the French, it seems to be targeting journalists in general...

OK if these people are professionals, why can't the bring the right paper s and visa's with them. Wouldn;t you think you would bring your paperwork with you and have things in order??

Damn right! It's not like these things are usually enforced rather laxly, if at all!

And dave2236, may I see your papers, please?

Not only that, but remember people, the terror threat level was just raised to HIGH, so this may be the reason for the increased security at E3. I know the raising of the terror threat level doesn't affect alot of people, but I'm sure it has something to do with this incident. Not to mention they are French haw haw haw. :-D

OK if these people are professionals, why can't the bring the right paper s and visa's with them. Wouldn;t you think you would bring your paperwork with you and have things in order??Most video game journalists aren't really "true" journalists. Sure, we write about and report on games, but we don't belong to any journalistic organizations like the folks who write for the big newspapers might. Nor are most of us formally trained in journalism. So, I'm not at all surprised that a lot of these guys don't have press visas.

I still feel sorry for them (and their editors), though.

It also costs muchos money to buy everyone a press visa too... some places either can't or won't...

That's an interesting point, BenT. So I guess these guys would have been better off just saying that they were tourists?

I thought that too, why tell them you are reporters. Just say you are visiting for the weekend and happen to be going to the E3 game thingey.

But I also think there is more to the story.

The title of this thread is pretty misleading. E3 had nothing to do with the reporters being held, searched, and sent back from the airport.

LOL Too true! Cheese, why don't you change the title to something like "Video Systems, Inc. hates the French".

People, people, this is commonplace when dealing with the Ashcroft Goon Squad. Thousands of middle-eastern immigrants, resident aliens, etc. have been jailed, detained, or deported. People are being detained indefinitely without access to a lawyer, judge, a phone call, or even charges against them. All in the name of this thing called the "War on Terror." And don't get me started on all the civil liberties we've been losing to the government -- wait until you see Patriot Act 2: The Revenge.

And the Bushies have been making it their job to beat up the French as much as possible. Makes sense; I mean, literally the whole world opposed Bush's invasion and sacking of Iraq, but let's hit France, because we're too stupid to keep more than one thought in our pretty heads. Just turn on Fox News and let Mr. Murdoch do the thinking for you.

I'm sorry to rant about this -- I know this is not the place to discuss these issues (not that I have any opinions, anyway :-D ). I've had the boss I worked for get jailed by the Ashcroft Goon Squad four months ago, and I'm still somewhat pissed about it. A man who owns a business for ten years, and then just gets locked away because his college student visa expired. This is all McCarthyism redux.
