The ps2 had an option to double the disc speed and this cut load times like crazy on ps1 games. Is there any option like his on ps3?

No the option isn't there. However, call me crazy, I think games load slightly quicker on PS3. Well, PSX games anyway. Maybe it's just me, but NFL GameDay and GameDay 97 run almost twice as fast during gameplay. My PS3 is a 20GB model.

This option was removed because 90% of psx games runs with sync problems (or freezing) with this option turned on
