Hey all.

There has been two reasons to get a PSP:
1. Portable Emulation via Custom Firmware and Pandora Batter
2. RPGs

Since I fall in the latter and there are lists already out for PS2, PS3, and DS, I've decided to do one for the PSP as its basically PS1.5 and that many of the games are reminiscent of the great classics I enjoyed on the original Playstation.

If you find the lists below useful, check out these lists as well.

Final Fantasy Tactics is one glaring omission from that list, as is Star Ocean 2 (though to be fair that hasn't come out yet, but it's 'out enough' if you follow my meaning). Tales of Eternia and Valkyrie Profile Lenneth are the other absentees- and they're just the ones on my 'owned' list. Also, I think Oblivion's been cancelled, which is a bummer of epic proportion.

Don't get me wrong though, this is a worthy project, I for one love PSP RPGs. :)

Riviera the Promised Land is also missing from the list.

Gurumin isn't an RPG. It's an action/adventure like Zelda. Awesome game though.

You missed Generation of Chaos, which is odd because you listed the sequel.

Where's Jeanne D'Arc?

Then there's Lord of the Rings Tactics.

You also missed Puzzle Quest.

Pirates and the two Metal Gear Ac!d games are borderline cases.

Unfortunately, Tales of Eternia was released in Europe and the list is US only. Sorry. But I am a bit jealous of the fact, it and Breath of Fire III came over to your part of the world, completely ignoring fans here in the states. :(

Like I said, it was a rough draft. Didn't expect to hit all the nails in one swing. Besides, I believe half the fun in building these lists is getting everyone to contribute and take part in something they enjoy. ;)

Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness! Absolutely! I mean, if you're going to have FF:Tactics, Jean d'Arc and Wild Arms XF, you MUST have Disgaea!

And don't forget the Phantasy Star games in the Sega Genesis Collection!

Don't know about the Harvest Moons though... Are they really RPGs? Or are they just lame? My daughter loves all of them, so we own them all on GB, DS and PSP, but I just can't bring myself to play them... Weeding the garden? Milking the cow? geeze... No Grand Foozle to discombobulate means no interest from moi...

I love Jean D'Arc, Brave Story, Puzzle Quest, the FF remakes and Wild Arms... FFVII:CC was good too... I don't know that the Untold Legends, XMen Legends, Marvel:UA or Justice League games belong there, tho'... those are all more Dungeon Crawlers to my mind - not very much the classic RPG or Tactical RPG style...

I've been trying to find a copy of Dungeon Maker for a fair price for ages - having a hell of a time of it, too...

The only imports I can think with English text are the ones released in Europe (i.e. Tales of Eternia and BoF III) and possibly Korea (don't know for certain if game there are translated to English). So, doubt there are that many to list. If that's what you're assuming?

I know that Tales of Eternia for PSX is the same version in both US and PAL territories. The PSP version is the exact same version as well, just widescreen.

I'm assuming the same with BoF3, but I only own the PSX version and have yet to play the PSP version.

Disgaea 2 is actually being ported to the PSP as well. It's not here yet, but we all know that crappy game will be here one day. The Disgaea games and pretty much any tactical RPG NIS makes is a joke.

Doubt it. Digitally distributed games (PSN, Xbox Live Arcade, VC, etc.) to me are considered on "separate" consoles as they're on different mediums (i.e. UMD as opposed to digital data). But it does warrant some thought and possibly something to do later down the line. I'll stick to the UMD side...for now. ;)

Besides that, if you wanted to include digital copies of games, you could add every PS1 RPG released... I've played Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX on my PSP thanks to CFW, and I loved every minute of it! (well, except for the flipping back and forth with different rips of VIII changing ID #s, because it still hangs here and there, but it was playable, and I did get through it!) I've thought Rezel Cross looked interesting as soon as I saw it. Too bad we never saw a release. I don't get any text heavy games unless they're in English. I bought two Japanese RPGs and I wasn't very entertained even though one did have pretty good gameplay. The only time I played a RPG in Japanese and enjoyed it is when SNES emulation first started and I played FF5.

*edit*

While looking at the list just now. I noticed Prinny Can I Really Be the Hero and Dissidia Final Fantasy being there. Even those are originally RPG series, the games themselves aren't RPG titles.

Prinny is definitely not an RPG as it's a platformer. However, supposedly, on Dissidia, there is an option to play the game menu based where you tell your character to either attack(and it being ai controlled) or to retreat. If you asked me it wouldn't really feel RPG like, but I've never done it so I dunno.

It's well worth getting hold of if you can find a copy - it's one of the best RPGs on the system for sure...

Anyway, this is a great list... A quick check against my own database shows that I'm only seven games away from having a complete collection of PSP RPGs; a worthy goal if every I encountered one! ;)

The last few I need to pick up are:

Dungeon Maker II: The Hidden War (UFO Interactive, 12/9/08)
Monster Kingdom: Jewel Summoner (Atlus, 2/19/07) - got it! 12-FEB-09
Riviera the Promise Land (Atlus, 7/11/07) - got it! 04-FEB-09
Star Ocean: Second Evolution (Square Enix, 1/20/09)
Tales of Eternia (Ubisoft, 2/10/06) - got it! 01-FEB-09
Vahalla Knights 2 (Xseed, 10/1/08)
Warriors of the Lost Empire (UFO Interactive, 12/13/07) - got it! 05-FEB-09

I think only Jewel Summoner might prove a bit of a pain to track down... I haven't seen many copies of it about...

Sweeeeet this is an awesome list! I just bought a PSP a couple weeks ago and have already started building my RPG library, and this'll help a lot :D

Might I make a suggestion to possibly put each game's Metacritic score next to it in the list? I mean I know reviews aren't always reliable, but Metacritic can be helpful since it reflects the general consensus. I just don't want to buy a game from the list if it's gonna be rubbish :(

Never really a big fan of review sites. I'm a firm believer that we are our own critic and we know what we like despite what others may think.

But if you need some advice on what to get and what to avoid, I'll be glad to give my two cents.

Ys: Ark of Napishtim: Didn't play the PSP version, but if its anything like its PS2 port, then its a solid game. Colorful, vibrant, and fun to play.

Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions: Need I say more?

Legend of Heroes: Tear of Vermillion: Story is good. But the gameplay leaves something to be desired and that the text looks like what the google translator threw up from a bad hangover. Unless you can forgive a LOT of grammar mistakes that'll make any elementary teacher cry, then don't get this game.

Legend of Heroes: Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch: BLAND. It's the only word I describe this game. Gameplay's your basic turn-based combat. Story doesn't really stand out much. They did improve the text from the first though. Not too bad, not too good, just...bland. A title for RPG beginner but they're better games to fill those shoes (i.e. Dragon Quest VIII).

This one has caught my eye on the shelves - it's budget priced at $19.99 around here, and I'm sorely tempted to give it a try... From what I've read, whether or not you would consider it an RPG probably depends on how you feel about Puzzle Quest. Puzzle Quest is a great puzzle game wrapped in an entertaining story mode, and from what I can gather, Neverland Card Battles is a decent card battle/strategy game mix wrapped in a decent story mode, so if you think Puzzle Quest qualifies, I think this one should too...

{edit} - bought it this morning, and the above comments definitely apply... This one should probably be added to the master list...

Alright, they have it in Japan, but does anyone know if Persona is expected to be released in the States?

Depends on how profitable (remember Atlus is a business) the game will be. They've released titles in Japan that haven't reached here in US (i.e. Devil Summoner, Princess Crown (My friend is eagerly waiting to be translated cause he can't understand the story in the walkthroughs. )). I'm surprised they brought over Hammerin' Hero (though nothing wrong with a platformer) instead one of the their popular niche titles, but the DS is outselling the PSP and makes it the "better" bet.

Getting hungry...will finish thought process later.

Solertia

There is absolutely no good reason for Atlus to NOT bring Persona PSP to the US, especially when they ARE bringing stuff like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16878116033) to the US (note: I don't know anything about this game, it could be a good game, I don't know. Back from lunch....

Persona - Persona 3, P3 FES, and P4 sales all totaled at least 1.2 million and 420,000 units for the original on the PS in japan only. There's shouldn't be much incentive for Atlus NOT to be bring it to the states. Although the PS1 and PS2 has greater market penetration.

Devil Summoner - The 2nd Devil Summoner for the PS2 coming to our shores may decide for Atlus whether to bring this long awaited original a US release.

Princess Crown - I'm surprised why this game is still in Japan. It's the predecessor to the cult classic: Odin Sphere. I would think having its sequel reached Greatest Hits status in the states, Atlus rethink about Crown for the states.

Growlancer - Up in the air. Generations put Working Designs out to pasture and Heritage of War didn't perform well as it should. So, there's a good chance this game is stuck in the Land of the Rising Sun for now. Nothing is set in stone yet.

Bear in mind, for every PSP user, there's TWO DS users. And that's just ONE factor going against PSP JRPGs in US. RPG aren't very high on the "majority interest" for US gamers. Jeanne D'Arc number sold lower than Madden and on par with World Series of Poker on the PSP. The people, time, and resources to translate RPG as they are usually text-intensive. But I can't speak for Atlus, NIS, Namco Bandai, etc., as I don't have a clue what their thought process is like.

Yes! Spectacular news...

...on a side note, Motor Storm, Assassin's Creed and Rockband are also coming to the PSP this year... It's going to be a good year for this system!

I'm so psyched for Rock Band: Unplugged! I love how Harmonix developed a new method of gameplay (which is similar to their game Amplitude, which is awesome) rather than a watered-down version of the console game with a peripheral slapped on the handheld. *cough*likeActivisiondidwithGuitarHero:OnTour*coug h*

But if you need some advice on what to get and what to avoid, I'll be glad to give my two cents.

What's your opinion on Riviera: The Promised Land?

Not only that, they're bringing over another RPG called Crimson Gem Saga (a.k.a. Astonshia Story 2 in Korea a.k.a. Garnet Chronicles in Japan ) in 3 months! :D Persona and Garnet Chronicles jump off the Japan list and are boarding an one-way trip to the good old' U.S. of A.

Sadly, I can't say much. Have it but it's backlogged.

BTW, sorry I didn't edit sooner. Felt under the weather lately and caught a bug from a friend of mine. @_@

How was Astonishia Story 1?

How was Astonishia Story 1?

Poor... but apparently the games are completely different, and two is supposed to be much better... I think Atlus was smart to change the name; no one would be waiting breathlessly for an Astonishia Story sequel... LOL

A new one for the list, an SRPG called Mytran Wars from developer Stormregion and publisher Deep Silver.

One for one. Phantasy Star Portable enters the Master List and Mytran Wars takes it place. It took a while to find out when it's coming out. Amazon says its coming out April 30, 2009, so I'm going by that.

Consider Mana Khemia on the List and quite concidence on my birthday! :)

Although, I bought the Legacy of Ys for DS as a birthday gift for myself. Yeah, it's kinda turning my back, but if the PSP had the complete translated Ys collection. Rest assured, I'd be the first guy in line with a sleeping bag eagerly waiting outside Gamestop on release day. (Though I'd be the only one and be considered a nutjob. :p)

I haven't opened or gotten a chance to play Mana Khemia yet (been too busy with other games :P) but I couldn't help but notice that it got a 2.7 on IGN, and while I'm not one to listen to "professional" reviews, the major reason they graded it so poorly is because apparently the loading times are abysmal, loading breaks are very frequent, and sometimes the frame rates get awful. Has anyone played it yet and if so, have you run into these problems? Or is IGN overexaggerating...

Not sure if anyone knows about it as it was originally released two weeks ago.

Ys 1 and 2 being remade for PSP and Ys 7 is going to be on the PSP. Good news is that Ys 7 is its own game and isn't a port of a PC version. The Ys 7 info is actually older, but it wasn't announced for any system previously. Here's hoping ATLUS gets some sortof following from releasing the DS version of Ys 1 and 2 and then decides they'll port 1 and 2 and 7 for the PSP.

I've heard from a friend who owns the game that the load times are pretty bad. Another game that NIS brought over here had some pretty terrible load times too(Spectral Souls.) I think it's just the fact that the company is pushing out pretty shoddy ports as they really don't care about the gamer over raking in some quick cash(the least they could do would be clean everything up to fix load times, even if the developer is the reason for that problem.)

1 month long update.

Just added a new entry for Japan list. Also made a couple changes in upcoming dates. Upside is Crimson Gem Saga comes out this month. :D (On the 23rd :()

Japan is showering in new releases while hardly get a drop of news. Guessing companies are holding the good news with E3 on the horizon.
