I have someone doing a mod job on a Game Gear soon. I bought a SCART / S-Video to HDMI converter box and tried out the Neo Geo CD using S-Video to HDMI... It looks awesome! Better than just straight S-Video or Wii emulation of Neo Geo arcade games through composite. The box says it can upscale up to 1080p, but the Neo Geo CD seems to display 720p after conversion of the S-Video signal. I'm not sure if that is a switchable option I haven't looked for or if it automatically selects the best possible resolution.
This should work similarly for the Game Gear which will output RGB thru the SCART cable. The mod also comes with a Genesis / SMS controller port, and replaced audio and video capacitors.
To test the conversion box more thoroughly, I ordered a Genesis 1 SCART cable from Europe. If it looks great, then HDMI Genesis may be my new preference. "High Definition Graphics" as labeled on my Genesis will finally mean just that in some ways. If it improves as much as the Neo Geo did, I may hunt for a Nintendo SCART or S-Video cable depending on which one is cheaper at the time.

The 32x doesn't really help, no. It does have "enough" colors, but it doesn't have a GG palette set aside. It would have to have been designed for GG compatibility for that to work.

If you mean in the same vein as the Super Gameboy or whatever the name is, then sure. Because the Super Gameboy is just a gameboy in a cart and passes the video along to the snes to display. The same could be done with the 32x, but you would be completely bypassing the SMS compatibility *in* the Genesis itself. In that respect, it's kind of lame. It would be an addon for an addon.

Forget the 32X part and I'll take two. ROFL

What about getting one of those GBA flash cards, running a Game Gear emu. on it, and playing it on a GBA player on a Game Cube?

What about getting one of those GBA flash cards, running a Game Gear emu. on it, and playing it on a GBA player on a Game Cube? You could just as easily use one of the other aforementioned GBA-to-TV adapters, or a PSP with TV-out cables running a GG emulator, or even a whole PC running a GG emulator connected to a TV. But the object here would seem to be getting authentic GG hardware connected to a TV one way or another.

Well the only way to do that is to mod the system with an AV out, which has been done and proven. But it's timely and messy and costly to have someone do it. Anything else is really no different than using a GBA or PSP. Why go nuts just so you could use a GG cart?

Why, indeed?

Why collect old games? Why not emulate everything?

Emulation isn't perfect. It can get pretty close though. Some people like to play on original hardware. Part of the old school gaming feel is using the original controller. It's what makes the experience enjoyable. If nobody cared, people would be playing roms on their computer and the market for items like the everdrive would be non-existent.

It was a rhetorical question. :p

And I'm one of those crazy unusual Game Gear CIB collectors so trying to get an RGB mod ASAP is something I am enthusiastic about. The guy who is going to do it is over in Europe and is kind of busy for a while so I kind of wonder if there's someone in the USA who does the RGB mod, although I do trust this guy's skills already. He was good at telling me which converter box I needed for connecting it to my TV .

The everdrive and similar flash carts allow you to play nearly all the games, on the original hardware. Often they are unreleased, proto, or from another region with patches. However, you're still playing on the original hardware itself. Maybe the old, old Atari stuff you have an AV mod for clarity. But you're still pretty much stock.
A "Super Game Gear" inserted into a 32X or Genesis or SMS, whatever, is now no longer stock. You've gone well beyond what the designers did. Sure, it would be cool, I agree with that, but it's not original hardware. I'd probably buy one.
I've seen the few "tutorials" on a Game Gear AV-out mod, and it's not feasible for most people to accomplish. I'd definitely make a mess of it. The Game Gear is a portable system, and if you want to enjoy the games as they were intended, then playing them mobile is the way to go. Emulate on a GBA or DS or similar.

What I want is to be able to play actual Game Gear carts on a non-stock system, because the Game Gear hardware kind of sucks. I would even totally go for a screen replacement mod, if someone out there starts offering it as a service (I sure as hell couldn't do it myself).

I would also gladly pay for a screen mod!

Let's say for a moment that you had a "Super Game Gear" concept, where you pulled components/boards off a Game Gear. So you put the GG game into that, and then wanted to put that thing into another SEGA system....Which would you use? SMS, Genesis, 32X? Are any even possible? You'd be passing controller input back and forth, and audio/video from the GG to the base unit for display. Would it have to be the 32X due to palette? Would there be CPU clock differences?
