I recently did this mod for svideo for multiple sega systems or possably others and it works great. im sure i saved a bundle of money or headaches if i would have sent all the systems in or did the internal mods myself.

items i needed at minimum

- Y PLUS RGB to svideo converter (around $25-$35)
http://www.arcademvs.com/ARCADE_ACESSERIOR.htm
or ebay
or Jrok converter also but more expensive (i have not tried these converters)
- 8-15vdc power adapter for converter (i use 9v 300ma rating)
spec sheet says 8-15v 1.5 watt max and internet site says 8-5v and im sure its a type error. i will go with the spec sheet they provide.
- 8 pin male din plug (262 degree) for genesis model 1 (spare 32x to gen 1 cable recommended) with all connecting pins
- 9 pin mini male din plug for 32x and genesis model 2 (spare 32x to gen 2 cable, apple, or the commonly available recommended) with all connecing pins
- soldering iron for din plugs
- electrical tape

note that cables with wires already attached is so much easier and more reliable.
you can option putting your own socket on the consule if you have them available.

other items needed if you want go further with a proper setup

- plastic box or something to house the converter
- rgb scart male to female cable (i ordered f-m and m-m for Genesis 1, 32X, master system and converter) with all connecting pins.

i started by finding the pinouts online.take special care of what pinouts your looking at whether its pinout looking into the consule or looking at the cable itself. i wrote the pinouts on a piece of paper with female and male pinouts.

my converter came with power cable end and rgb connecter cables. the rgb cables are just the connectors with wires for connecting strait to a cable end or the prefered scart female socket that i used. the converter comes with 2 different rgb sockets that i tested. i ended up using the smaller socket that has (VS) VERTICLE SYNC, (HS) HORIZONTAL SYNC, GROUND, RED, GREEN, BLUE. this may or may not be the best way to hook it up and i will explain why in the next thread. i just went with my first good results and left it at that.i cut the spare 32x link cable (for 32x or gen 2) for an end and used a gen 1 din plug (not recommended and hard to solder those as cut cable much easier) for other genesis model 1.

my connections

SYNC - HORIZONTAL SYNC ON CONVERTER
GROUND - GROUND
RED - RED
GREEN - GREEN
BLUE - BLUE

the ending results are fantastic and is a great project that is not so hard on the wallet. i have multiple systems that include genesis with cd and 32x,genesis with multi game hunter copier, sega master system and others.this device gives svideo for all without having to mod all.

if anyone want's to give it a try have at it. i won't take any responsibility if you damage anything. remember there is a 5volt out on the genesis so be careful, always check your connections more than once. if you have a multimeter you can check continuity of your connections

this first thread is to simplify things (for those who want to give it a try) and i will create a new thread to give more details.

when i first connected to the converter i used the larger connector with just one sync connect and it gave bad results. i have heard somewhere you can use composite as a composite sync. my knowledge dosn't go that far and didn't try that with the single sync connect.i got good results from connecting the genesis sync (not composite) to the horizontal sync (verticle sync not used) on the converters smaller connecter and i left it at that. if it works good why test further.

i used the female rgb scart connector as the video input socket on the converter and the male ends for my sega cables. i searched the net for scart pinouts. i connected all the scart wires to the correct pinouts including stereo sound (note my Gen 1 didn't ouput stereo sound (only mono) through the 32x so i just used sega cd output) . my gen 2 without 32x did have stereo. gen 2 with 32x may do stereo?). i used scart pin 20 as my sync although its pinout is composite according to online pinouts. i also used the scart sheilding as ground. please note that genesis din plugs are hard to solder with bigger soldering irons and i highly recommend finding those cables online/ebay for connecting the genesis and 32x together ( note gen1 requires 2 cables together but end is only needed) for the lead ends. the gen 1 cable i made already lost the green connection and i had to resolder.im not sure but if things short out it may mess up the gen or converter so ready made cables are the way to go. i reinforced the connector with tape to prevent it from yanking the end.

i had a little plastic project box to put the converter in. ran all the cable through drilled holes. ran some rca stereo leads from the stereo sound connections out of the seperate drilled hole. so i had my simple little svideo box with 2 drilled holes and some vent holes (just incase), video input (female scart), and rca stereo sound cables.

i used scart so i could buy regular scart cables made for sega systems but when i tried one that i bought it did not work. i checked the pinouts on the scart side and they used composite from the gen to pin 20 and ground on a another pin rather than the scart sheilding. i gave up on the readily made cable pretty quickly since i already had cables made anyway. i was hoping to get it set up so i could buy readily made rgb scart cables for sega's and others for my amiga, atari st and apple gs to use with the converter but i have a feeling those won't work either.

if anyone has more info about some questions i have please post

did i connect things up right?
does verticle sync need to be connected if i have a good picture?
does sega composite out work with the single sync pin on the converter?
why doesn't my bought genesis rgb scart cable work?

thanks

i ended up putting 5 pin din sockets on the genesis 1 (with copier attached) and the sega master system because i had them available. i had the proper male cables already with wires already attached. i didn't want to put my trust into those 8-pin sega plugs i purchased as the solder points are too close to each other and not easy to solder or put together. one connection already came loose and had to resolder. unplugging and plugging is just too prone to causing this. i don't want to ruin the converter or consule with a short. why don't they have those stupid din connectors available with wires already attached?

for the genesis stereo sound i just plug into the headpnone jack (since i only had 5 pin sockets). for the sega master system sound i used a commodore 64 (chroma, luma and audeo) cable attached to the sega 8 pin socket and just used the audio out.i used a second cable for svideo (2 cables for one system....oh well). the commodore 64 cable works for the genesis 1 and master system and the red chroma lead is unused. red chroma lead will send the genesis blue signal incase anybody is worried. blue shouldn't harm anything if plugged in by accident. the 5volt out would something to be concerned about and the commodore dos not send that so its a safe cable. i just tape the red chroma out of the way anyway.
