It was bound to happen, in the exact same way that Super Mario Brothers achieved the original record. And now history was made again: http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=2724

A few notes. First, Wii Sports got alittle help by being bundled with the Wii. But the same can be said about Super Mario Brothers being bundled with the Nes. And second, look at that list. Notice anything interesting about it? I'll give you a hint: every single game is from Nintendo. Talk about a monopoly. It looks like the acolades Nintendo get from the Wii are non-stop.

I suppose at this point theres only one more record for Nintendo to break: to surpass the PS2's total global sales. Funny I should bring that up: http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/wii-sales-pace-to-soon-jump-ahead-of-ps2-says-pachter/?biz=1

I really hope the Wii doesn't beat the PS2 lifetime sales mainly because the PS2 was an amazing system and well I am so dissapointed by the Wii especially compared to the PS2.

Does MS still include hexic (or whatever that puzzle game was called) with the premium/elite systems? If so, wouldn't that put it on the list?

That's exactly how I feel, only the total opposite.

Interesting stuff, but a part of me is saddened that the title that was replaced was Super Mario Bros. It's just such a classic, and something that truly signaled a transition into a new era of videogames. Wii sports is nice, and I congratulate Nintendo for their accomplishment, but it just seems bittersweet, ah well, time moves on.

Seems Dylan has once again been proven right, yeah?

Kind of a BS record since peiople aren't actually buying Wii Sports as a stand-alone title, but they COULD buy SMB as a stand-alone title.

Well, there are a lot more people in the world today and a lot more people buying/playing video games, compared to when Super Mario Brothers was out.

That is all I can think of to say now. I knew it would happen someday, but I am still a little disheartened. :bawling:

Sure...if you only count the NES/Famicom cartridge version Super Mario Brothers (or SMB/Duck Hunt, which was easily the one that made up the bulk of those "sales")

but I bet if you count how many times Super Mario Bros. has been sold as a piece of "software" (total every unit sold) it would top Wii Sports.

Super Mario Bros. NES
Super Mario All Stars SNES
Super Mario Bros. Color GBC
Super Mario Bros. GBA
Super Mario Bros. VC
(am I forgetting any significant release?)

And I bet that Nintendo will continue to re-sell it at every given opportunity ... how many times have YOU re-purchased SMB?

Wii Sports isn't a pack in everywhere, its sold seperately in some countries, including in Japan I believe. So its no different than Super Mario Brothers.

The way it's going...count on it. I still can't believe it's selling like crazy!

This is killing my brain, someone answer this...

I find this news to be incredibly saddening.

I doubt it, since Hexic isn't an actual retail game.

I can see it now... retro gamers on the hunt, 20 years from now... "Was that place any good?" "Na, all that was there was about 10 copies of Wii Sports. How did you do?" "You won't believe it man! I found a Mario/Duck Hunt!" "Lucky bastard!"

Yup, the future is a strange place...

As far as pack-in games are concerned Minesweeper for Windows beats Wii Sports hands down.

I can just imagine another person making them jealous with the Combat cart he/she found. :p

If you think about it, it seems fitting. It's yet another revolutionary game on a revolutionary system that changed the market forever.

That's not too supprizing whilst Nintendo does seem to have almost forgotten about "proper" gamers its marketting to non-gamers has been nothing short of amazing, I've never heard anyone over 50 talk about Mario, but Wii Sports and Wii Fit are all the rage.

A little help? I wouldn't have bought it in a million years if it hadn't come "free" with the Wii. Same with Wii Play and the extra Wiimote. Oh well. SMB is the better game. I won't even put "IMO", because it's a fact.

Quoted for truth. Amen, brother.

I might as well grit my teeth and submit to the fact that from this point forward, when I'm at dinner parties or conferences, people are going to find out I play video games and try talking to me about fucking Wii Fit for the rest of my life. The hell will never cease. I was hoping the trend would pass. I was wrong.

Not to get off topic, but I think the crew over at VGChartz needs to do some research, they say that every game on their list has been bundled with a console at some point, but I don't remeber ever seeing the Gameboy packaged with Pokemon Red/Blue/Green or Pokemon Gold/Silver, nor do I remember Wii Play ever being bundled with the Wii. Admitedly, I could be wrong about the Pokemon thing, but I'm pretty sure that Wii Play was never a pack in title in any region.

Wii Play is a pack-in with a controller, which is why it sells so well.

on the contrary, wiisports is the reason the wii is so friggin popular. it is a killer app, just like smb was in the late 80's

Was an amazing system? Shame on you gaming fan:) The PS2 is a solid piece of hardware with a solid game library. Every home with a Wii should have one of these next to it. Don't get me wrong, the wife & I love our Wii but our PS2 is still part of the family:)

Haha! That's the way it is here. PS2 and Wii side by side. They get played the most.
