I was browsing ebay and was noticing that gripshift for the PSP has been selling for a bit over $50 lately. Why is that? did it become rare all the sudden or something?

I believe it's needed to hack into the PSP 3000.

That's right. Funny, that game has been less than $10 for ages since pretty much no one cared about it initially.

It's still $7.99 at most GameStops, so check their site (http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=39575) to see if they have any in your area.

I bet you everyone who's paying 50+ for it is going to feel really stupid if the PSP3000 actually can't get a custom firmware and the coding exploit is as far as it goes. If I were them I'd either get it cheap or wait until it can actually get the custom firmware.

anyone paying over $50 for it should feel stupid anyway.

don't know about you guys but I'm keeping my eyes peeled at the store for it. To pay $8 and get $50 back is a pretty notable profit. I already checked a couple stores though with no luck to be had.

Yeah, I was looking to cash in on it but no one has it around me.

Yeah, same here. I guess I should have jumped on it when I first heard the news about the exploit over the weekend.

Any chance they'll discover more games that let you run the exploit, or is Gripshift pretty much it?

So do I now own the most valuable PSP game?

Are there different product codes for this game? Every auction seems to be secifying one particular code?

PapaStu

Only one print run of the game as far as I know. It never went into GH status or anything. This was one of my few 'wanted' PSP games that I had yet to get. I don't think i'll be getting it anytime soon now.

That's probably so search engines pick up the item.

Stu - I think it's pretty much the same game on XBLA...just whore it out for achievement points that way ;)

/me holds up his copy of Gripshift on the PSP to taunt Stu :P

Nah, the PSN and XBLA versions are larger and better. More courses (like 50% more), more variety, reworked vehicle handling, new track barriers, online play, etc. The reworked handling and new track barriers are the big changes though, especially when driving off road.

Still! Gripshift! It rocks!

In time, maybe... though my guess is that since they found an exploit for a game that is (or rather, WAS) plentiful and cheap, they'll just worth with this until Sony finds a way to stop them (PSP-4000 anyone?).

In any case, I think the idea is that they'll use this vector in order to try to find a way to make a Pandora Battery for the 3000's. When that happens, the prices will likely fall back to normal.

They still haven't found a means to install a custom firmware using Gripshift though, so we'll see how things turn out.

I need to snatch these up if I see them. It reminds me of how the PS2 hard drives have jumped up in price over the last year.

There's like 5 copies near me. I'm actualy tempted to get them and flip em. Tempted to cause I realy hate fliping games reguardless of reason.

If you want, I can see if they got a CIB copy and pick it up for ya if posible.

The really sad part of this is that Fry's literally couldn't give copies of this game away just six months ago. They kept making it part of their PSP bundles and sold it separately for $4.99. They either finally sold out or sent them back to the distributor.

Is it just the NA version that does this or it is worth me rounding up the European versions near me and flogging them on? (Might pick up one anyway as a test subject but still useful to know in advance)

Thanks for the heads up. My local GameStop had one, so I went to pick it up. No insert or manual, but it makes no difference to me if it's just getting flipped. I figure it'll drop back down later on if I ever want to have a copy in my collection, so I may as well take advantage of the current madness. :P

Better hurry and get them up on Ebay. I have looked a couple of times today and 26 new copies were added and quite a few are going in the $20-$25 range now and lots aren't getting any bids at all. I suspect this bubble is about to burst.

I suspected that was going to happen. I sold 4. I have 2 more CIB and one sealed. I might lower the price on the sealed one before the price on those drops below $50.

You might want to just forget about it at this point. Another 16 copies went up today and checking the finished auctions, lots are going for $20-$25 and many aren't getting any bids at all.

Damn. That was fast. I'm still going to look for factory sealed ones at Best Buy, Target, Circuit City, Sears, Wal-Mart, etc. If no one buys them with my "buy it now" auctions I can simply return them within 30 days(longer than that for Target and Wal-Mart).

Well, if they get that exploit to do more than it does now, the demand might come back. Of course, another 16 copies went up between last night and this morning. Lots more no bid auctions it looks like.

I guess that explains why Gripshifts have suddenly been selling for me at work. They were in the cheap bin for about 2 years, so good riddance I say. Hopefully the next exploit will require Frantix or Pocket Racers, I'd love to get rid of some of those.

HEADS-UP!

If you live in California, Texas, Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, Oregon, or Washington, GO TO YOUR LOCAL FRY'S ELECTRONICS STORE (if you live near one, that is).

I went to one here in Georgia and found 80 (that's eighty) copies of Gripshift for $5 a piece. I bought them all. Sold them on ebay in two days for an average of $30 a piece. I could have easily made double that had I shipped overseas but I just don't have the time to fill out all that PPW at the PO.

GET THEE TO FRY'S AND CLEAR THEM OUT.

Actually, that's a good tip fish, but they were sent to only a couple locations to be clearanced. Your Fry's was one of them.

Gripshift fever seems to be over, at least for now. I sold my last batch at $20 a piece and it took a while. I think the hardcore hackers have gotten their copies and the rest of the PSP scene is waiting to see if the exploit can do anything besides play simple remakes of Pong and Bomberman.

Also, the most recent PSP firmware seems to have patched the hole. So that's probably another reason it has calmed down.

This is correct. As soon as Sony caught wind of the exploit they jumped right on it and released a new firmware to patch it up.

Well, the copy I bought sold for $50, which may not be big bucks, but that's good enough for me. What was funny about it, though, was that it was bought by a middleman service for Japanese consumers that want goods on US eBay. I know all about the services for the vice versa scenario (with Japan Yahoo) and have used a guy myself, but I never heard of any for the Japanese.

I sold two of those myself to that same service... it's some new subsidiary of Ebay. They send some irritating automatic e-mails but left good feedback right away.

The first one I sold went for $71, the next one two weeks later went for $30.
