As the title says, I just got a Japanese Sega Saturn. Any suggestions for awesome games?

I have now placed most of the Saturn videos from my CD onto YouTube. Due to the limitation of 10 minutes per video, I have split this into 6 volumes. If you do a YouTube search for "155 sega saturn", it should find all 6 videos.

Seeing the games in action may be more helpful for you to pick ones you like.

Some that I'd recommend

Burning Fight Asuka 120% - a fun all female cast fighter with decent attacks and supers. Not deep but can be fun

Most SNK ports - these are excellent, and you get ports of some of the lesser known ones like Galaxy Fight

Street Fighter Zero (alpha) 2 - this is fighting game heaven for Me, almost as good as Third Strike and SSF2T

Pocket Fighter - all sorts of fun

Puzzle Fighter

that's what I played a lot on My saturn when I had a working one. I gotta repair my region modded one soon.

You should reupload to Google Video in one sexy, long video. That sucker was a godsend for when I wanted to uploading lengthy Panzer Dragoon Saga videos. Also, isn't there a way to bypass the 10min/100meg limit on YouTube now a days for content creators or some such?

Make sure to get the RAM expansion cart (some of the good games require it). Anyway, XMEN: Children Of The Atom is great fun!

I'm tempted to simply reply to this thread with the word 'enjoy'. :)

Seriously though, the RAM expansion is a must.

As mentioned earlier, the SNK conversions are on the whole pretty sweet. Street Fighter Zero (Alpha) 3 is pricey but stunning, as is SFZ2.

And yes, it's a cliche, but Radiant Silvergun is as good as everyone says it is.

I may sound like an idiot here, but what do the yellow and red labels mean?

Here are a few off the top of my head:

Keio Yugekitai - action/shooter
Tenchi Kurau II - 2D beat'em up
Elevator Action returns - action
Cotton 2 / Cotton boomerang -cutsy shooters but fun
princess crown - beat'em/rpg
Lode Runner - fun with 2-players (also releaseed on the ps1 in the usa)
Chase HQ - A personal favorite of mine

There are of course all the 2D shooters like silvergun, batsugun, bulk slash, blash wind, dodonpachi, layer section, metal slug etc.

Here are a few sites you might find useful:

satakore.com - real good sortable saturn database

segagagadomain - lots of impressions/game info and lists if japanese is required for many of the games.

...and say goodbye to your leisure monies for the next year or so. It's what made me buy a Saturn in the first place.

I may sound like an idiot here, but what do the yellow and red labels mean?

Here's a yellow labeled one from ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/SUPER-REAL-MAH-JONG-P-7-for-Sega-Saturn-JP-NTSC_W0QQitemZ190261344675QQihZ009QQcategoryZ13997 3QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1

And here's a red labeled one from ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/SUPER-REAL-MAH-JONG-PV-for-Sega-Saturn-JP-NTSC_W0QQitemZ200266469375QQihZ010QQcategoryZ13997 3QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1 638Q2em118Q2el1247

The age restriction is whats labeled in the little yellow and red boxes. These two are mahjong games but they have many more adult games than mere mahjong ones, such as shooters and date sims.

Virtual On, Gundam Side Stories 1, 2 and 3, Gun Griffon and Twin Sticks! That is all.

I'm going to second the Capcom D&D Collection. Two of the absolute best beat 'em ups ever made. It's a bit pricey, but well worth it.

In addition, try:

SHMUPS
Radiant Silvergun
Soukyugurentai
Thunder Force V
Batsugan
DonDonPachi
In the Hunt

BEAT 'EM UPS
Pulirula Arcade Gears
Princess Crown

FIGHTING GAMES
Virtua Fighter 2
Samurai Spirits 4
Fatal Fury 3

JRPG'S
Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
Shining Force 3 parts 2 and 3

... Too many games to list, actually. The Saturn is awesome.

I may sound like an idiot here, but what do the yellow and red labels mean?

Dem's teh pr0n(as 12P noted).

Welcome to DP, by the way. :)

D&D collection.

Is there any English in this? I thought about trying it out on my modded Saturn but I just assumed the entire game was in Japanese.

I second Bulk Slash, but it's not a 2D shooter as someone previously said.

It's not terribly complex, pardon using 'some' items. The only big deal with Shadows over Mystaria is the intermittent loading. It's not long but it occurs often which kills the action. I have D&D Collection myself and I enjoy it but arcade (and in english) is where it's at. It's a shame the US release was canned though...

As for import recommendations, everyone seems to have it covered rather well.
I too recommend a 4meg expansion cartridge along with:
Vampire Savior, Street Fighter Zero 3, Battle Garegga, Bubble Symphony, Thunder Force 5, etc..
Take a quick look at a near up-to-date catalogue of my collection. I'd recommend most if not all of them.

Just to warn you, if you play a Mahjong game for the animated boobies (and trust me, that's what hooks you in the first place) be warned. Once you learn the rules, and get used to it... you get so hooked you *skip* the low-grade ecchi for more mahjong goodness.

It's a sick addiction that only gets worse. I used to play eons worth of Super Real Mahjong IV on the NGPC and skip past all the strip scenes. "Fuck this noise, I want more mahjong".

Layer Section. It should still be very cheap, and it's an absolutely awesome shooter. Really, buy this game!

Other than that, I'd go with the other recommendations for shooters and SNK/Capcom fighting games. And Metal Slug. I'd certainly try before you buy with some of the games if you have the opportunity. Radiant Silvergun may be incredible, but some people just don't get on with it; same with Garegga. Souky is really good though, and well worth the cash.

You will end up very poor, but highly entertained. Get that TV turned on it's side and have fun.

I was going to say check out my site - www.segagagadomain.com but 2 people have done that already.

The Saturn has many games that are just stunning and unlike the Dreamcast, many of them are still Saturn exclusives or best versions are still on the Saturn. Really, check out the games on my site. With over 1000 games listed with comments you'll soon get a good idea of what's what. Also check out the video vault section to see games in action!
