Okay, I bought this thing 2 or 3 years ago for $40 bucks off a pretty good, albeit slightly shady friend of mine.

I didn't get it working until recently when I bought a new battery. Now it turns out I needed a charger as well as a battery, and it's currently in the mail from ebay (I hope).

But the other day I bought Patapon for my PSP, but it won't work.

When I try to play the game it says:

The game could not be played

(80020148)

And when I true to run the upgrade on the Patapon UMD (my PSP is currently around 2.6 or something like that) it says:

The game could not be played

(DADADADA)

What's up with this?

The PSP plays the game I got with it just fine. This Japanese "Bleach" fighting game.

And some PS1 games on the memory stick work great too.

But this Patapon is screwed.

And my battery is two seconds from dying since I don't have a charger yet.

ring up sony and tell them you have had it for two months say any date
and if they ask for a receipt just hang up and call again
i have done this as i had a broken psp all parts were broken
and they changed it for free and my void sticker was not intact
just say you psp I recommend you to just simply say that the
analogue stick not working save lots of time on the phone and if they say where you bourght it from just say any shop you can think of and they will send you a working console change on the spot they dont check void sticker

I was kinda hoping for a slightly more ethical approach...

Try installing the Custom Firmware 3.71 to 5.02 and then running the game. Plus try another game to rule out that Patapon is messed up.

well, first off to do any of that I gotta wait for the charger I ordered off Ebay to come in.

The PSP plays this Japanese "Bleach" fighting game just fine.
