I have a PS2 I am going to try to fix for a local thrift store. It won't read DVD's, Silver Disc PS2 games, it will read the blue ones and PS1 titles. What can I do to fix the problem?

First, clean the lens thoroughly with a qtip dipped slightly in alcohol.

If that doesn't work, tweak the potentiometer to the correct value (listed somewhere online) using a multimeter. There are two: one for CD and one for DVD. Tweak ONLY the DVD one.

If still nothing, replace the lens. It's super cheap.

Q-tip and alcohol should work but sometimes doesn't. I got my Japanese Dreamcast out of storage and cleaned it up. I used Q-tip and alcohol on it after it would play a game, but that still didn't work. Then I used my cd/dvd lens cleaning disk (the one with the brinshes on it) and that made all the difference in the world. Good luck!

It's always the q-tip and alcohol for every situation isn't it?

I have been cleaning PS2s and the like with Alcohol and Q-tip for quite a while with no smoke coming from it as a result. I go with Alcohol because of its quick evaporation. I have a version one PS2 that is still running great using nothing more than this method and re-greasing the rods once.

Gotta agree.

Unless too much alcohol is used and the console is turned on...besides a nasty electric shock or discharge, a nice puff of smoke should appear...

But that would be negligence, not the alcohols fault.
