I just found out that my friends from work play Rock Band 2 on the 360 and they want me to join in. Am I better off getting Guitar Hero: World Tour or Rock Band 2 for the instruments (I'd just get the game for the one I don't get). I hear the instruments are compatible, but I noticed that the GH drum set only has 3 pads while the RB one has 4. How does that work?

the ghwt set has the two cymbal pads, so it's got five pads + bass drum. if you hook up a rb drum to ghwt, it'll just remove one of the drum pad tracks. pretty nice of them.
my rb1 guitar is on its last leg (soon to be replaced with another gh2 xplorer) and both of my rb1 drum sets have iffy detection on the red pad for fast rolls. haven't tried the ghwt drums but i hear they're a little more sturdy. so i guess you'd be best served with buying world tour instruments, then buying rb2. all that said, i still consider rb2 the superior game due to the more lifelike note tracks and excellent dlc support.
so basically what i'm saying is:
guitar hero = better instruments
rock band = better game

Though this thread here (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=126732) is a little more drum focused, its still on the main page, and chock full of good info for both, so this one is going to get the lock.
Junk, you're talking RB1 equipment, not RB2. The RB2 drums are supposed to be better from what i've read, but don't personally know because i've only got a RB1 kit. Besides the RB2 kit has cymbols as well.
I'd personally vote RB2 over GH:WT simply for the DCL and the fact that you can get another 50+ songs by importing the RB1 songs over as well. Besides, Harmonix is a rythm music game maker... Neversoft is not.
