View Full Version : What was your first sports game?

as a kid, mine was RealSports Football on the 5200... as an adult, it was Troy Aikman Football on the Genesis... I got all the RealSports games for the 5200 after I ran out of other new games to get for it... they were alright, but I never really got into them, so eventually I sold them along with all my 5200 games... I decided I didn't really want to keep anything before the 16BIT era, so it wasn't until I started getting sports games for the Genesis that I got more into them, and eventually got some sports games for the SNES and some of the rest of my systems as well... if you count racing games, I have at least one sports game for every system I own, and not counting racing games I still have at least one sports game for almost every system I own
anyhow, Troy Aikman Football was the sports game that broke my absolutely no sports games rule, and from there I decided that I should have at least one sports game for every major sport on at least one of my systems, so I started with the Genesis, as it was notorious for being "the sports system"... then there were a few sports games for the SNES that weren't available for the Genesis that I wanted to get, so I ended up with at least one sports game for nearly every major sport on that system as well before too long... then I decided I wanted some portable sports games, so I got at least one for every major sport on the Game Gear also, except for golf... there's still a couple of Game Gear golf games that I'd like to get, but I still haven't bought them yet... I'm not sure if I ever will or not though, as I have more golf games for multiple systems than I do for any other sport... I have more basketball games than any other sport, but most of them are for the Genesis... anyhow, I think the 32BIT golf games are the best ones to own
so, there may be alot more 32BIT golf games in my future, and possibly some more 16BIT ones too, as I I only own two 16BIT ones so far... I never got into any of the PGA golf games yet, but I may do so someday, if only to have more courses to play on... that's the one thing about golf... there's more courses than anyone could ever put in a game... which makes it cool and sucky at the same time... variety is nice, but there's too much variety in golf
anyway, nowadays racing games are my mainstay, so I'm not as into other sports games as I used to be, but I still enjoy playing all my sports games once in a while... I'll never go nuts trying to get all the Madden games, or all the other sports games though... I still don't own any Madden games, and I prolly never will... however, if my dad ever gets the Madden game he wants for his Wii, I'll prolly end up playing that one with him... just for the fun of it

NBA Jam for sure. I freakin loved that game.
However, no sports game will ever affect my like NFL 2k5 did. I was playing that game from it's release until November of 08 with updated rosters.
Why did I stop, you ask?
My X-Box controller broke and I'm too lazy to get another :P
And I could play it on the 360, but all my data is on the X-Box.

I believe it was Tecmo Bowl on the NES, and if not that, it was Ice Hockey.

It was either Sports Talk Baseball or Joe Montana Football for the Genesis, I didn't like either that much so I avoided all sports games for well over a decade. I kept playing Golden Axe II, Sonic the Hedgehog, Kid Chameleon, Taz-mania, and a few others instead. Good times. :)

It was a pair of games for the Atari 2600, both acquired the same day by either my mother or father.
Home Run was one of them. I thought that game sucked back then and it still does.
I can't remember the name of the football game but I know for a fact half a dozen 2600 experts here might.
It was the black cartridge (Mattel maybe???) with the stupid glitch in which your defender could run off of one side of the screen and reappear on the other side to tackle the guy with the ball.
I'll always remember that game and the glitch because it spawned the biggest fight that ever took place in my household growing up. After having this trick pulled on him (which he saw as "cheating"), my oldest brother punched my other brother.
Next thing you know they were throwing each other around the bedroom that the 2600 was in and knocking over everything in the room.

Hockey for the Intellivision is my guess/assumption for the first sports game I ever played. My family is a hockey family and my dad owned this one from the time I was born.

If you call Pong a sports title now...
Don't recall having any sports games on the 2600, not even the Activision ones. So it was probably International Soccer on the C64...

It's replicated table tennis and table tennis is sorta a sport, I guess. :)
Other than that it would have to be 2600 Realsports Baseball or Football. Played Football much more, but I can't recall which was actually first played.

On a TV, probably.... hmm, that's a tough one.
well if we're counting handhelds, change my very first to Mattel Football... EVERYBODY played that game when it came out... I never owned one of my own, but I played it with other kids at school all the time... a true classic!
I guess it's odd that I don't own more football games than anything else, since football is my favorite ball game... but there's just not that many good ones, IMHO... I know Madden is supposed to be the best, but I've avoided it all these years specifically to avoid getting addicted to owning the latest version every year... I wouldn't be happy unless I owned them all, so I just avoid them to save myself the trouble... and I like all the football games that I do own just fine... they're enough to keep my happy, but I would kinda like to have some more to choose from... maybe I'll get a few more someday

This one and Las Vegas Poker/Blackjack for the INTV, if we're counting card games as sports (they're on ESPN, so why not)
I don't see why not either, we have the World Series of Poker now, so it's a pro sport now
What systems would you be thinking of getting them for and what football games do you currently own? I might be able to recommend a few.
I'd prolly be considering the Wii, Genesis, SNES, 32X, Saturn, Playstation, Dreamcast, and Jaguar... Brutal Sports Football looks pretty good, but it's cost prohibitive... cost has prevented me from getting World Series Baseball on the 32X too, because I won't get it if I can't get a new copy of it... that's been my rule for every other game, and I'm sure as hell not breaking it for any sports games... rare or not, I want an absolutely mint copy to play...
Super High Impact and the Super Techmo bowl games look good, but I've avoided Techmo games because I don't want to feel compelled to get all the other Techmo sports games to go with them, cause that's what would end up happening... maybe not such a bad thing, but again, cost is a huge factor for me to consider currently, especialy given the current state of the economy... and factory sealed Techmo games cost ALOT of money now...
NFL Blitz and NBA Hoopz look good too, so it's a good thing I'm not adverse to adding still more Basketball games to my collection... especially the NBA!
so yeah, maybe I'd prefer more arcade style sports games over sports sims... but I'd still be interested in more sports sims too... maybe I'll get into Madden on the Wii if my dad gets the Madden game he wants for it... who knows?
I really wish the Mike Ditka games were as prolific as the Madden games are... if they were, I'd be all over his games... I love Mike Ditka... I have a real man crush on him... so I'd buy the hell out of his games, but from what I know of them, they're nowhere near as good as that ugly John Madden's games! BTW, I prolly should mention that if my dad does get his Madden game for the Wii, it'll only because there's not a better one he can get with somneone else's name on it... he HATES John Madden, and so do I... nothing personal against him other than he's ugly and comes across as obnoxious
I'm not really a big sports fan, and I hate to admit I know very little about most sports and wouldn't be worth a shit at most of them in real life if my life depended on it, but in sports games I can be pretty damn good sometimes!
what I really need is a coach though... I know all the moves off the court well enough to teach any man how to play, but I dunno all the strategies!
if you get all that double entendre, you just might be the man for me, but I doubt anyone who might respond to it all would be old enough to recruit me
oh well, perhaps homoerotica in sports games is a whole other topic now...
so back to this one... I'm still interested in Jerry Glanville's Pigskin Footbrawl too... I'd prolly prefer fantasy or futuristic sports over everything else... I still have several of those on my wishlist for consideration... like Mecharobot Golf... and all the other fantasy golf games like Wicked 18 & Valora Valley golf... I know those two are the same, but they are on different systems... and owning more sports games on multiple systems would be a good thing
ice hockey for the NES, or is duck hunt a sport?
if it looks like a sport, and it quacks like a sport, it must be a sport... and hunting is one of those homoretoic sports, like fishing... it's men being men... male bonding and all... where young boys are taught how to be dirty old men... all manly and masculine, yet loving and sensitive, and big & cuddly...
I LOVE YOU MAN!!! HOW ABOUT A HUG???

Here's what I can suggest. Unfortunately none of them are particularly "arcade style" but all of them should be fairly inexpensive.
Playstation: Jimmy Johnson's VR Football 98 (never had a sequel, it was a one shot deal)
SNES/Genesis: NFL Quarterback Club & NFL Quarterback Club 96 (each system received ports of both games)
32X: NFL Quarterback Club
Jaguar: Troy Aikman Football

Joe Montana Sports Talk Football... man I played that forever as a kid. I was (and is really) obsessed with taking whichever team did worst in the league and ressurecting them to the super bowl.
later after I got into the game at first, I watched my first Super Bowl - Washington v. Bills, Doug Williams' famous comeback and becoming the first black man to QB a team to a Super Bowl win (is he still the only? Maybe McNabb will change that...)
now I'm hooked on football... don't play the VG versions too much. lol.

This was my first as well, me and my Dad would always play it together. I must have been only 7 or 8 at the time so you would think he would take it easy on me, but he always burned me with that damn outside slider pitch that I couldn't resist:mad: I still carry scars from that till this day lol
The Microsoft version?
I'm not 100% sure, but I think so. It's quite a long time ago and I've changed my computer since then :)
If you call Pong a sports title now...
...
Here's the Wiki entry:
Pong is a first generation video game released originally as a coin-operated arcade game by Atari Inc. on November 29, 1972. Pong is based on the sport of table tennis (or "ping pong"), and named after the sound generated by the circuitry when the ball is hit.
Nobody played this way back in 72? Plenty of sport games on that console.
I only got mine during the 90s:

I'll be damned if I can remember which one. I played so many on the Nes. So it could be Bases Loaded, Double Dribble, Hockey, Blades of Steel, Tennis or something else entirely.
I'm pretty darned sure that it was the Kobe Bryant basketball game on the N64.

That's easy...Pong! Or a Pong knockoff...I forget. It was one of those systems that had a couple Pong-like games on it. You may say Pong wasn't a sport but wasn't it a visualization of Ping Pong or Tennis? That would make it a sports game in my mind. As far as a more traditiional sports game, I had a few for the 2600 a bit later...Home Run which I could never figure out, may have been the first of those. Activisiion's Tennis may have been the first sports game I got I would likely still enjoy playing today.

I'm almost sure it was an all-sports 8-game cart for the 2600. I remember it had Basketball, Tennis (or was it RealSports tennis?), a soccer game, Bowling...and I can't remember the rest. It had a yellow label, and three littles keys on the sides of the cart to change the games (which was pretty cool, 'cause the usual Dactar 4-game carts had the little keys on the front). Now that I have a 2600 again, I surely miss it.
