After some work (and boredom from being OUT of work), I compiled various parts from working/non-working C64 units and miscellaneous work to create a factory fresh looking/feeling/working Commodore 64 unit. It seems to be near impossible nowadays to obtain a perfect original C64 unit, so I am pretty proud of this. Took me a few weeks (and three C64 computers) to get it to the perfection I desired :)

Out of curiosity, what do you find is wrong with them? I have at least 5 C64s, and the only one that's damaged has a key broken off.

Well, I had one that had a bad character rom (scrambled graphics), another that had a dead SID (someone did something stupid here...probably pulled the a/v cable when on), and the other was extremely dirty. I have come across many bad C64 computers in my time, but the majority can be fixed in most cases. The major thing in the restoration really was finding a casing that was NOT sunfaded/stained/dirty beyond cleaning!

I know people like me in the 80s fried their C64's CIA chip causing modems not to work. How did I do that? Oh, by plugging in modem while it was on. Duh. Besides killing the modem, some copy-protection schemes wouldn't load anymore.
The SID chip is hooked into the joystick port if I remember right, so you have the possibility of frying that if you have some static electricity during plugging in a joystick.

I used to chew through CIA chips by moving my joysticks from port to port with the system on.
