I did a search on this forum and i didnt find that this was posted, but if it is already posted, then please lock this thread.

I recently read on a swedish Nintendo 8-bit NES forum that there is a rather strange way to get some glitches in Super Mario Bros 1. Are these new? I have never heard of them before at least.

First i must note that this seems to only work on a NES console that have been made region free. I read that it should work on an old Famicom as well, but i havnt tested that myself. This is what you have to do to get the glitches:

1. Insert Super Mario Bros 1 into the NES console, then take out the game without turning off the console.

2. Insert Tennis (the first Tennis game from Nintendo) into the NES console, press the reset button on the console and then play the game alittle. Then take out the game without turning off the console.

3. Insert Super Mario Bros 1 again. Press the reset button on the console. When you get the Super Mario Bros 1 menu up, then hold down the A button on the controller and press the start button.

Depending on how much you move around/play in Tennis, the different glitches you will get.

When i first read about this i didnt really belive it, but then i saw someone that had posted some pictures that it worked, and today i got to test it myself, and it actually works :) I wonder how someone found out these glitches. Here are some pictures that i took:

I am sorry for the relatively poor picture quality, and i do have a CRT TV that i play NES on, i usually dont use this LCD TV just so that is mentioned :)

Hmm, interesting. I can't test it (don't own Tennis, and I haven't modded my NES), but I'd imagine it would work with other games, too. Does it have to be the standalone SMB, or does SMB/Duck Hunt work as well?

That is a good question, i have no idea if it works with other games. I forgot to mention that i tried to swap with Super Spy Hunter instead of Tennis once and then i didnt get the glitches. However, i only tried it once and i didnt always got the Super Mario Bros 1 glitches to work even if i swapped with Tennis, so it might work to swap with other games than Tennis as well, but Tennis was the only game that was mentioned on the forum where i read about these Super Mario Bros glitches.

I am not sure if it works with SMB/Duck Hunt, but since that game has a menu first (where you can choose between SMB and Duck Hunt), unfortunately i am not sure if it works. I can see if i get to test that soon :) I used a standalone SMB game.

I can also mention that the NES console i used is a scandinavian NES console, the SMB game is a german and/or austrian version (it still has english text in the game though, but the game is from one of these countries i think), and the Tennis game i used is the scandinavian version, at least i think it is since the manual in the box is the scandinavian version (there is no region code on the game itself) :)

cool trick.
Reminds me of the trick to get 99+ live is space harrier 2 on the genesis.
It invoved swapping a game hot.
At the time i was scared to try cuz the warnings but was too tempted to beat the game and did the trick.

it just has me thinking was this put in for a reason or was it dumb luck?
Are there any other games like this?

That's pretty cool.

I'm going to guess that this is merely someone displaying a SMB hack. Who exactly would take out a cart, insert another, then insert the original back in?

I never tried but the japanese ver of smb does something diff if you jump through the wall in world 1-2 . same thing we do on the usa ver to get the -1 water world.

I would guess this is it.

I've heard of this before but I can't remember if it was on here or not. The only reason it would work is if the NES retains past ram data when it's reset. Once cart rom is read into console ram then as long as you don't turn it off, you can remove the cart and the data will still be there. I'm not sure I would call that a glitch though. If you knew the right codes, you could probally do the same thing with a game genie.

Ye, that is one thing i forgot to write, sorry. If anyone want to do this trick, then do it at their own risk :) I am not sure if the NES console can take any damage if you swap games without turning the console off first.

That is a good question, i am wondering the same thing myself. I wonder how someone figured out how to do this trick with Super Mario Bros 1 and if there are any other games that are like this as you say =)

I can guarantee you that i only used original NES ames, i didnt use a SMB hack that is on a pirated NES cart or something :) I wrote how to do it, so everyone can try it if they can and/or want to, to see if i tell the truth or not :)

This is a good question. When i first read about it, i didnt think it was real either until i saw the pics of a guy who showed that it worked. And later on i tried it myself, and i saw for myself that it works :) I was wondering how someone figured out how to do this thing in the first place. As you say, who would think about swapping Super Mario Bros 1 with Tennis and then swap back to Super Mario Bros 1 without turning the console off?

Ah ok, so that is how it works, thanks for the info! :)

Ye, i am not 100% sure what would be considered as a glitch, but since the game seems to display some random graphics some places (like the grey turtle, the green fish and the green text at the end instead of white text) i assumed that is was glitches :) Also, at the level 9-1, when you get to a certain point in that level, then the level just restarts. It might be that you can do the same things if you have the right Game Genie codes as you said though =)

EDIT: Is it possible to change the color of some of the enemies with the Game Genie by the way? I dont have that much experience with the Game Genie, so i must ask :)

I can also add that sometimes all that seems to be changed when i did this trick was that the level name was changed, for example to "world I-4" or something, but that level was the exact as one of the original levels in the game, at least what i could see.

Wow, this is a great find!

Are the levels completely glitched up, or is there the possibility these are left over level designs in the SMB code?
I know this sounds very unlikely, but the fact im seeing 'World 9-1' only makes me curious as to wether SMB was meant to be a longer game and cut short by Nintendo!

not left over levels, but mario's level data is pretty simple, when you do gltiches that tell you to go to level 9-1 32-1 etc, the game looks for the data thats next in line in the rom, and will read that to make the level, that data is graphic data or other game data, it just interprets it as level data (same way metroid has all those bizzare levels if you go where you shoudln't with the wall door technique) not quite as cool as true lost levels, but is interesting to see what you come up with.

btw -1 isn't negative 1 its actually 32-1 ;-)
