This preview is from Electronic Gaming Monthly,
Number 45, April 1993, Page 90.

I remember seeing this very preview in EGM when it arrived in my mailbox.

I always wondered what happened to Final Fantasy Adventure 2, long after I got Secret of Mana, never realizing SoM *was* FFA2. I didn't find out until maybe 7 or 8 years ago, and yes I know now that the original Final Fantasy Adventure, aka Seiken Densetsu, was on the Game Boy and that Secret of Mana is Seiken Densetsu 2.

And Seiken Densetsu 3 (unofficially Secret of Mana 2) on Super Famicom is probably the best game in the series. I'm glad it was fan translated long ago so those of us who cannot read Japanese can enjoy it.

If I recall correctly, there was another EGM issue where SoM was going to be called Final Fantasy III.

I think I sort of vaguely remember that. Maybe.

Yeah, it's pretty common knowledge at this point.

Final Fantasy Legend 1, 2, and 3 are also SaGa 1, 2, and 3, respectively.

So it's a spinoff from FF.

Well, technically anyway.

So it's a spinoff from FF.

Well, technically anyway.

They're both spinoffs of the FF series without the US names being Final Fantasy Adventure or Final Fantasy Legend.

We'll start with SaGa. After what happened with FF2, they gave Akitoshi Kawazu his own series to play with. The games have gotten better as the SaGa series has progressed(with the exception of SaGa 3 which is kindof crappy for the series.) So while FF2 may have sucked in everything but graphics and storyline, it was the start of a great series.

The original Seiken Densetsu borrowed heavily from the FF games in terms of graphics. You fight the Fighter, Black Mage, and Ninja classes(near the end game.) There's also a Red Mage that joins your party. Let's not forget the Chocobo and Metal Chocobo along with boss monsters like the Lich which you end up getting Nuke/Flare after defeating(which the same boss on FF1 uses Nuke/Flare as well - so take it as what you will.)

Sword of Mana, the remake of Seiken Densetsu, is missing the Chocobo. This is possibly to get it away from the Final Fantasy likeness the original carried. It's bs if you ask me because I liked that Chocobo.
