I'm trying to decide what system to add to my humble collection next and I'm torn between a few choices. Let me start by saying that I was born in '88, so the Genesis was my first system as a kid. I have some memories of playing my older cousins' NES, but anything older is before my time, so bear with me. I currently own:

-NES (Front Loader)
-Sega Genesis 3
-Nintendo 64 X 3
-PS1
-PSOne
-Dreamcast x 2
-Playstation 2 Slim
-Playstation 2
-Xbox
-Gamecube
-Wii
-Xbox 360 (Halo edition)
***

There may be one or two I missed that aren't in clear sight, and I have a bunch of handhelds, but that's the majority of it. For the next addition to my library I was thinking about adding either a Sega Saturn or a Turbografx 16. The C64 and Master System also crosses my mind but I think I'm set on one of the first two.

What do you guys think would be the better choice to get first, based on price, availability, and number of good games? Any input would be great, and feel free to recommend some good games for whichever system you go with.

***Yes, it's true. I don't now nor have I ever owned a Super Nintendo. As kids we were happy with the Genesis until we got the N64, so it was one of those things that just never happened. I know it's a good system but I'm holding off on it just now. Don't ask why I just get into particular moods with my games and that's what I set my mind on getting.

I basically have all of what you have too, and I've been thinking about buying a Turbografx-16. I was going to ask the DP community about it and see what they thought about the system and library of games.

Killing two birds with one stone then. Maybe we can both find some help.

It has to be a Master System, cheap to collect for with some real gems, check out www.sega8bit.com if you want more game info, plus with a little patience you can get 99% of the games for under £10.

In my opinion the Saturn is a better system than the TG16 with much better games. However, playing imports in addition to US games will increase the library of each exponentially. In that case I'd get both(well, the PC engine as opposed to an American TG16). But if you're just talking about US systems than I'd get a Saturn. They are easy to play imports on too thanks to a wide variety of import convertors.

i would definitely pick the sega master system. (sms) it has a bunch of the classics that are still popular and if you like the feel of the nes controller then its definitely your type of system. slightly older.... maybe an intellivision.

Anyone considering the TG-16 had better love, and I mean LOVE, shoot-em-ups.

I do believe the Sega Saturn should be the next step in your classic gaming evolution.

I have to second this. I have wanted to collect for the TG-16 for a long time but I'm not a big fan of shoot-em-ups so that has kept me away from collecting it extensively.

The TurboGrafx-16 does have other games, but the shoot-'em-ups do stand out. Still, there's the Bonk series, Legendary Axe 1 and 2, Devil's Crush, etc. It's an exotic feeling system I've always thought, which was the appeal for me at the time. It's not too hard to find systems and games for it, the problem is that it's much more difficult to get the best games for it. At least getting them without breaking the bank.

The Saturn is fairly common, but it's a little more difficult to find non-sports games for it. It's easy to go into a retro games store and find heaps of PS1 games, but you're lucky if you can find a couple dozen Saturn games. Still, with patience, you can build up a decent collection. I've never actively pursued a Saturn collection, and I seem to have 40 to 50 games for it, several of which are imports. That's another thing to mention, with a special type of cartridge (mine's called an ST-Key) you can play Japanese games, which is the easiest region mod of any console I own.

Don't feel bad about the SNES, I never bought one either, and have no intention of doing so. Nintendo's business practices back in the NES era put me off of them until the GameCube came along. I have very little Nintendo stuff in my collection, and even less that I ever play.

With the Turbo you can easily emulate a game to see if you like it. For a shmup fan it's a wonderful system to get into, but be sure to pick up a multi-tap if you want multiplayer action. Importing is a good route so you may want to get a mod system or expect to pay a bit for a converter cart.

For the Saturn it is harder to emulate and downloads will gobble up space, so there's more checking out reviews and gameplay videos to judge if you'll enjoy the game. There are a lot of gems and other import options between carts and mods. Totally worth picking up at some point down the line in gaming/collecting, just be sure you can get spare cases for cheap. I'd suggest picking up Retro Gamer Magazine as they just ran an article last month regarding Panzer Dragoon and Zwei, and now this new issue has Saga being covered! Also check out www.segagagadomain.com for import reviews.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm leaning towards Sega Saturn at the moment, so now I just need to get some games. =)

I actually already have SCUD: The Disposable Assassin so I'm excited to play that. Gotta track me down a copy of Mr. Bones.

You need an Atari 2600. You can get a system with 50 games very inexpensively. We're talking less than $100. Ignore the graphics, they don't matter. It has many quality games, that should be required playing for anyone who calls themself a gamer.

Either a Turbo Duo or a Sega Saturn would make a fantastic addition to your collection.

Both systems have some incredible domestic games and they have even better import games. So they should satisfy you if you ever decide to start importing. They are also are VERY easy to play imports on.

They have a wide variety of games but if RPG's and Shooters are to your likeing then you should be sold on at least one of these systems!!!

Both are great systems, but the Saturn has more games worth playing IMO. Plus, by comparison, Saturn games are generally cheaper and easier to find. The same is true of the systems.

Sega Saturn, end of story.

There are a huge number of Saturn games(mostly imports) that you literally cannot and will not play on any other system: no one has figured out Saturn emulation yet, and the games for most other systems are available on various collections for a variety of systems(Taito Memories/legends, Namco Museum, MSX antiques, etc. etc. etc.). They can wait.

Radiant Silvergun, Batsugun, DoDonPachi, PuliRula, Steamgear Mash, Guardian Heroes, Nights into Dreams, Soukyugurentai(sic!), Lunacy, Deep Fear, Soul Hackers, Symphony of the Night Saturn edition... The list goes on and on.

It can get pricey, but it's worth it.

Pezcore, he has a point here.

But since you seem to have made up your mind, then you aren't going to waste your money by investing in the Saturn.

At worst, you will have an easier time finding Saturn stuff locally in a thrift store, flea market or game store (even if it is overpriced) than you would anything for the Turbografx. Believe it or not, that does make a difference in the long run.

Once again thanks to everyone who has replied with advice. Especially for any games recommendations, I'm always looking for something I've never heard of or played before. And just so no one's feelings are hurt =P I do plan on getting all of the systems mentioned eventually, its just a matter of what to get RIGHT NOW.

Thanks again everyone.

This actually isn't true anymore! SSF seems to have gotten quite good in the past few years. It runs a lot of games really well now.

I'll give it a shot again, but the last time I tried SSF it couldn't run anything other than Bug!, Clockwork Knight, and a few other games that didn't really take 'advantage' of the screwed up Saturn hardware.

Can it run Radiant Silvergun or Guardian Heroes properly? That's the real test...

i dont really like the Atari that much. Probably because most of the games I have though are the atari made ports of Arcade games I already have, although I do enjoy a lot of the Activision i have. Atari i think is an acquired taste, it's really hard to enjoy if you didnt grow up in the era.

Did I miss the SNES? If not, you gotta go with that system. If you liked the Genesis, you will love the SNES.

The Sega Master System has better "quality-ingenuity-unique software available"/price.

The Sega Saturn has incredibly good games but there are too few and most of the great stuff is very expensive .. yes, you can find cheap games, but few are "must-have" like Virtua Fighter 2.

Sega Master System has too many great games available, most are cheap; even the good ones :D
