View Full Version : Underrated Super Nintendo games

I'd figure as we have a thread for the NES and its 800 game library. I'm sure with the SNES larger library, we can scavenge a few gold nuggets. :wink 2:
I'll start:
Pocky & Rocky -Lovin' the game. Like an overhead contra except with cute, Japanese cartoons. Best played with a friend.
Twisted Tales of Spike McFang -Another niche game with anime-like characters (and I'm a sucker for them LOL). Playing as a kid vampire in training, you explore an overhead world relying on your hat-throwing and tarot abilities to save the day.
Secret of Evermore -Another one of Square's sleeper hits that still goes unnoticed. It had all the makings of a kid's imagination.

Seconded for Secret of Evermore. That game was fantastic. I don't know why it sold so poorly (or why there's this sudden "anti-Evermore" vibe online - the game did well with critics) but it's one of my favorite SNES games.
Still hopin' for a sequel. :)
Oh, and it's too bad that Square scuttled the studio after the game tanked - all the guys went off to join Humongous Entertainment, where they made such gems as Backyard Baseball and Freddi Fish. Man, that's some wasted talent.

Saturday Night Slam Masters!
One of Capcom's best fighting games in a near arcade-perfect port complete with 4 player multi-tap mayhem!
It's a shame the arcade sequel was so awful, I'd love to have seen this franchise make its way beyond the 16 bit generation.

I rented that every single weekend for a year. And then I bought it... and still play it to this day. :)

We had an informal "beat Frankie in Slam Masters" tournament a few Navas back ... took the better part of the day but somebody finally scored a pin and Joe gave them a T-shirt.
But seriously Capcom ... at this point I'd even settle for one of the Slam Master alumni in a Capcom "Vs." title!!
The Adams Family is probably one of the greatest "movie to game" games ever made. It's one of the first SNES games I ever got and remains one of my favorite platformers. The sequel Adams Family Values wasn't too bad either from what I played (kind of a spiritual sequel to Fester's Quest), but doesn't compare to the greatness of the original.
Secret of Evermore -Another one of Square's sleeper hits that still goes unnoticed. It had all the makings of a kid's imagination.
Oh Secret of Evermore, I loved you, yet at the same time I hated you. It really is one of my favorite games for SNES, but it has one nasty game ending bug in it and I was unfortunate enough to get hit with it. The said bug involved one of the boss battles, if you warp out of it you'll be unable to get back in the area, thus completely fucking you over if you decide to save your game like I did. This happens pretty late in the game, so needless to say, I was completely furious when it happened.
Still never had a chance to beat the game.

Super Smash TV
Ignition Factor(thanks snes_collector, coming into this thread I was trying to think of it)
True Lies
The SNES Wolenstein Port....possibly the first FPS for any home console(maybe Faceball 2020)
Super Pitfall(if it is truly underrated)
UN Spuadron
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Jurassic Park 1 and 2
Theres a ton out there, god knows I havent played them all.

Can't say I agree with Ignition Factor being on that list... sure, nobody's ever heard of it, but it's a pretty ho-hum game (interesting premise aside), so I'd say it's got the credit that it deserves.
Not sure how often Gemfire gets talked about, but if you're into turn-based strategy games (and I promise you, this one doesn't get bogged down in being overly complicated) plus a fun fantasy twist, it's a great game to sink some time into. Love the soundtrack, too!

Total Carnage is all out fun. Gun Force, Magic Sword, Phalanx.

Oh, and I forgot Raiden Trad. It gets dumped on quite a bit for not looking like the Genesis or Arcade version, but if it was a stand alone title it would probably be on everyone's top ten list.

Rock 'n Roll Racing - totally addicting
Soul Blazer - one of my favorite games of all time
Lagoon - amazing music
UN Squadron - seems to be quite underrated by many to me.

You know I just cant enjoy Total Carnage.......I LOVE Smash TV(Me and My bro wasted our youth on it), something about that game(besides its brutal difficulty).
Ghoul Patrol is a game I have to play, loved ZAMN.....and To this day I have never playe Phalanx but will never forget the cover(guy with banjo with spaceship in background)

Super Pitfall(if it is truly underrated)Super Pitfall was an extremely lackluster (to put it nicely) NES game. The Super NES game was Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure.
Now I wish I had something to add. Equinox, maybe? Or EVO?

First off, check out my post in that thread (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1180945&postcount=8). I wrote a little bit about Spanky's Quest, On The Ball, Space Megaforce, Claymates, and Dino City, and even included some photos.
And with that being said, here we go:
The Addams Family
B.O.B.
Big Sky Trooper
Biker Mice From Mars (think Rock N Roll Racing meets Mario Kart)
Blazeon
Cacoma Knight in Bizyland (Qix clone)
Claymates
D-Force
The Death and Return of Superman
Demon's Crest
Dino City
Dirt Trax FX
Disney's Goof Troop
Firepower 2000
The Jetsons: Invasion of the Planet Pirates
Jurassic Park Part 2: The Chaos Continues
Lamborghini American Challenge
Mechwarrior 3050
On The Ball
Phalanx
Pinball Dreams
Pinball Fantasies
Plok
Prehistorik Man
Realm
Scooby-Doo Mystery
SimAnt
Soldiers of Fortune
Space Megaforce
Spanky's Quest
Spectre
Stunt Race FX
Super Baseball 2020
Super Pinball: Behind the Mask
Top Gear 3000
The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang

I'm going to put in Mystic Ark, AKA The 7th Saga 2.
Just because it's still never been translated doesn't mean it wasn't awesome. And much better than the first.

I know it's a port. For all I know it may even be a bad port. But I really liked Utopia, even though I don't usually like Sim City-type games.
Kid Fenris

Dragon View (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_View) is greatly underrated. That may be because it's the sequel to Drakkhen, even though the two games are largely different. While it has an ugly, Drakkhen-ish 3-D overworld, Dragon View's dungeons and battles play like a 2-D beat-'em-up action/RPG, and the translation is one of the most coherent (and corny) among Super NES RPGs. It's not an undiscovered Zelda or Secret of Mana, but it's surprisingly well-designed.
I can't believe no one has mentioned Sky Blazer. This game absolutely owns.

Ogre Battle for me. Alot of people bash the game for its difficulty and long maps, but it's a really good game. I personally enjoy the original better than Ogre Battle 64, but Ogre Battle 64 has a much better storyline.
I love Ogre Battle so much I've even created multiple Advance Wars maps based off various areas in the game. I added alot more towns, but only in the locations of cities that can be liberated, this way keeping the map true to the Ogre Battle map and also having a higher rate of towns so it's more of an active Advance Wars battle(so basically a single town in Ogre Battle may be multiple cities/bases to capture in Advance Wars. There are some slight additions I made, but only to make it even for both sides(like adding ports in water areas that had no towns along the water or atleast in another specific area.)
I also second Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. Very good game. Yes it's a little easy. But the gameplay works very well for what they made of it, great graphics, amazing music(most of it atleast, even if there's not much,) and the sortof okay story.
The Great Battle games. They take various gameplay from other games such as Valkyrie Densetsu, Wild Guns, Contra, etc. They mix them together with characters from Gundam etc. The games may not be as good as the ones they based them off of, but very close.

If you like arcadey multi-player sports games, Capcom's Soccer Shootout is a must. Don't even worry if you don't like soccer or soccer games much, just like you don't need to be a huge basketball fan to like NBA Jam. I'm pretty my group of friends and I are the only people in the world who like this game and it's a damn shame.

I'll throw in SOS. It's not perfect and probably not for everyone, but it's certainly an interesting little game where you try to escape a wrecked ocean liner as it sinks. You have one real-time hour to make your way to the escape hatch, but the boat turns around and areas fill with water or go dark, so it won't be easy. Four playable characters and multiple endings (based on how many other survivors you lead to safety) give it a good amount of replay value too.

Awesome! I love SNSM, it was a great game, and deserves a sequel. Maybe Haggar will show up as unlockable in a future Street Fighter game, we know Guy and Cody did.
Games I thought deserved more attendion were:
Run Saber (Strider clone, but had two player co-op)
Mechwarrior (Awesome game, and you could customize your mech)
Operation Logic Bomb (Cool story, but no save feature)
Super Chase H.Q. (Great game)
I know someone else mentioned it but Demon's Crest is so good, and well worth getting!
There are lots more, but these are only ones I can think of.

Nice music! :rocker: Those isometric view rally car games never really caught on in the US like they did overseas. R.C. Pro-Am's the only one I can think of that was popular here.
Frantic Flea, the game's gotten bad reviews in most mags, but I just love that game.
Also, Unirally is one of my faves.

Space Megaforce on the SNES from Toho
It's basically Blazing Lasers/Gunhed with the graphics and sound of the SNES. LOTS of levels and totally kick ass KABOOOOMS that I used to pump through twin Infinity tower speakers.
If you like overhead sh'mups , you would probably really enjoy Space Megaforce.
[edit] I should mention that it is indeed a completely different game than Blazing Lasers, but the power ups, and game mechanics are almost identical.

The best video game movie tie-in of the 16-bit era:
Alien 3

If it wasn't a movie tie-in I'm sure it'd be as popular now as Super Metroid

It's nice to see the wide range of opinions in this thread, and I absolutely agree with most of the choices. Nice to see B.O.B. get some love too. I highly 3rd Demon's Crest too (what a fukin' awesome game) as well as The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang.
The SNES simply had an awesome library :)

Man, I clicked on the title so I could post TWISTED TALES OF SPIKE MCFANG!!! (yes, all in capitals w/ three exclamation points), but I see the TC here has already listed it. Hell I suspect this whole topic was made solely to mention that one game. (It deserves it.) Having been cheated out of the opportunity to sing the praises of this great game, I'll just list a few other titles that are worthy of inclusion:
Arcana - said it before in another topic, but this is the spiritual sequel to Shining in the Darkness, but with a much darker tone. It kinda loses steam near the end when the dungeons start to become frustrating chores with difficult random battles every few steps, but until then it's a blast.
Magic Sword - an excellent port of an excellent arcade two-player beat-em-up in a medieval castle setting.
Shadowrun - not as good as the Genesis game (which is totally different), this is still an amazing action-adventure-rpg. My only quibble is that the gameplay is not nearly as open-ended as the Genesis game, but it's still totally engaging.
Actraiser - or is this not underrated enough? It has the perfectly balance between tough yet fair platforming action sequences and sim-rpg-style segments. Not sure if any other console game ever offered so many different yet well-done genres in one game.
I'll also second EVO: The Search For Eden. What other game has you playing as creature whose evolutionary trajectory is so sped up you can change forms every ten minutes? ... Oh yeah, didn't Wil Wright rip this off? LOL
