Alright here's a question: i know that if you copy a game to your 360's hardrive you still need to have the disc in to start the game. But once the game has been started, can you take the disc out? Im wondering cause a few of us are bringing our 360's together for a party this weekend and my friends want to play gears 2. The thing is we only have 2 copies of the game between 3 consoles, so could we install the game on one console, start it up then take the game out and put it in another?

1. No, I'm totally sure M$ would have foreseen this and blocked any attempt.
2. Do you really think this is wise question to ask around here?

You haven't heard? Removing the disc from your machine makes you a pirate.
And a MURDERER.

The 360 doesn't allow you to do that sadly.
And yes, you have to be careful asking such questions around here since there are Microsoft employees here and at other forums that would see to it that you'd have some hassles for even considering such a thing.

Even if you have the game installed on the hard drive, the 360 will reboot to the dashboard if you eject the disc while playing.

First off, how could that possibly be considered piracy?
Second, yeah the xbox won't let you. If you hit the eject button while playing a game, it will dump you back to the dash. Strangely enough, it'll dump you back even if you're playing an arcade title that doesn't use a disc.
I'm not sure if it's a bug or a design flaw. I don't really see a pratical purpose.

No rational person does.

Too bad MS and Sony can't learn from the example of the DS where you can play up to 8 players with one cart. It seems silly to need $180 worth of games to play 3 systems networked.

oh Lord, I wish there was a "report to ProgrammingAce" button... if there was I would report you like there's no tomorrow. He'd do his thing and save both the internet and every last one of us.

It's not a big deal. There are apparently a lot of people here who simply don't want to let things go.
It was a good question and one I am happy to know the answer to, although I really should have known it anyway, as I've noticed the 360 goes to the dashboard after ejecting games anyway.
Your best bet is just to rent a 3rd copy.
Speaking of which: the best use I've heard for the Hard Drive copy thing is saving a busted disc. A friend of mine's copy of NHL 09 stopped working. I suggested he rent it, copy it to his HD, and then see if he can play the game off his original disc. Worked like a charm - the part of the disc that is required at spin up isn't the part that was scratched!

I hadn't even thought of that, that's a great idea. I'll certainly keep that in mind in case any of my games crap out. Thanks!
