View Full Version : Importing an american SNES to Europe (Norway)

Well, it has come to this.. Screw the DS-remakes and what not. I NEED the real thing. So.. I've decided to invest in a SNES from USA, via eBay. My question though is, what kind of cables do I need to make it work here? I know my TV can handle NTSC signals or whatever, so that's not an issue. I'm mainly concerned about powercables etc.

I'd appreciate it if anyone would save a few minutes and help me along the way here.

Thanks!

Nico

PS! If I posted this in the wrong sub-forum, please move it :)

With most consoles you can just take a power cable from a normal console from your region and plug it into the console itself, at least that works with my Japanese Megadrive. Hope that's a help.

You should be able to use a local SNES power supply on the US SNES, I believe the power socket shape and size on the console is the same. Otherwise just get a stepdown transformer, 50W should suffice.

See if you can run it RGB anyhows for the best picture even if the TV can do NTSC. Been running a US SNES here in the UK since 1991 ;)

I envy you, Mayhem! I have a lot of ordering and emptying of wallet ahead of me! :P

So what are you using for the power thing then?

How do I find out about the RGB, by the way? I believe I need a RGB specifically for the SNES? I'm a total newbie when it comes to these kind of things, so I apologize for any weird questions that may fill up this thread!

Would this one work? http://www.qxl.no/form/ViewImage.asp?auctionnr=559271464&curimgvers=0&imgcount=1&rank=1

It's an original European SNES/NES power supply.

That one won't work. The US SNES uses a wholy different power supply (different connector, different output specs):

Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Virtual Boy
Output: 10V DC 850mA
Connector: coaxial 7mm/4.5mm with an internal 1mm pin
Polarity: center negative
Alternative: ???

Super Nintendo Entertainment System (PAL)
Output: 10V AC 850mA
Connector: coaxial 5.5mm/2.1mm (DC plug 2.1mm)
Polaridad: center negative
Alternative: NES (PAL)

You'll likely need an stepdown converter.

As for the RGB you'll need an SNES model SNS-001. It looks like this:

The SNS-001 also supports S-Video and composite output.

You can also get an SNES Jr. (model SNS-101) but you'll need to mod it if you want S-Video or RBG.

Play-Asia sells some SNES RGB SCART cables:

Yup, that's the model I'm getting. Too bad about the euro power supply I was thinking of using, though! Guess I'll look for a converter. Any tips?

Hmmm... so the power sockets are different? Have to remember that. When I bought my US SNES I was given a UK Mega Drive power supply with an adapter for it LOL

Still use that here actually... and obviously works for my US NES too.

Bleh, I'm going crazy here.. All I need is a step-down transformer, right? And by the way, how would a SNES look on a 32" hd-ready?

I'm also considering buying a modded SNES from consolepassion.co.uk, to be able to play NTSC games on a PAL system. Anyone got experience with them?

Yes, if your TV supports NTSC, that's all you need. I've got one for my Japanese Neo Geo and it works just fine.

I'd recommend using a CRT for the SNES if possible. It will depend on the TV really though; my previous LCD was horrific for old school, jerkiness everywhere. The new Sony Bravia is a lot, lot better, pretty smooth.

As for Consion Passion, yep good people, bit expensive, but good.

Yeah, I have a 22" CRT somewhere, but I'm not 100% sure if it can handle NTSC signals (it can play NTSC games on my chipped PS2 perfectly, but I think that's different). Virtual Console looks pretty good on my 32", though, but I doubt it looks as good with SNES.

This looks like it would do the job, though(?): http://webshop.batterystore.no/product/5691/5695/404588/Bachmann_Reiseadapter_USA_Europa.html

It says "This adapter does not change the voltage in your electric items. Check if it says minimum 220 VAC. One some items it usually says, for example: AC Input: 100-240v. This adapter can be used if so."

!?

Narrrr, screw the one on the link above. Wrong thing, and too late to edit. Does anyone know how much watt the step down converter I need should have?

What... huh? The US NES and SNES use completely different power supplies with different power types (NES power brick is AC, SNES DC), different plug tips, etc... how would one power supply work with both?

I have heard of third-party NES/Genesis model 1/SNES power supplies, so somehow such a thing is possible (with a switch between the modes or something? Different plug ends for each system?), but I do kind of wonder how.

Plugging in the NES's AC power brick into something that requires DC, like the SNES, will almost certainly instantly kill that SNES...

Well whatever adapter I've got that fits in my US SNES works fine on my US NES as well heh...

50W would be more than enough I'd imagine.

The PAL SNES and NES have compatible power supplies. Maybe that's why he got confused.

Confusion? Nope. The power supply I have for my US SNES, a hack job of using a UK Megadrive transformer with an adapter, works on my US NES too. Though now I have a proper UK NES I use that power supply instead...
