I've thrown out hardware but not games- like old/crappy controllers, ps2 network adapters (didn't realize they had value), and n64 memory cards.

Nope. Not even extremely scratched up disc only PS1 sports games - I've always managed to find someone who will take stuff like that for free, even though they're aware that the discs are pretty much coasters.
A few months ago, I got a couple broken third-party PS2 controllers for free, and offered them to a friend. He said he'd try and see if he could get them working. In the end, one of them turned out to be completely busted, but IIRC, the other one just needed a simple repair.

Yeah, I had a totally scratched rock band for 360 that didnt even work, and I just gave it away for free to a forum member.
Speaking of which, anybody on the boards have a disc resurfacer (it would be cheaper to ship them to somebody then to have it done here in town).

I agree with people who would use them for coasters. They've done the same thing to record labels. If you can't use it for the intended purpose, it'll do just as great as something else.
Another thing that pops into my mind is some fancy wall coverings~
As for throwing out games? Never. I've taken in games that no one would give a true home to before. Well, I might have without knowing it... My game shelves get extremely full and they are right next to my trash can...

Yes. A lot of stuff simply isn't worth my time to try to get rid of, nor is it worth the space it would take up. If I had five copies of SMB/Duck Hunt, they'd probably go into the trash. I'm not going to spend 20 minutes packaging them up to be shipped and making a trip to the post office if someone offered to take them off my hands, nor am I going to drive out of my way to a thrift store to unload them. They're no more important than stacks of old common baseball cards or crappy LP records missing their sleeves.

I think I threw out some defective games in the past, carts that I couldn't get to work at all. I don't do that now though, I actually have a couple of defective games that I'll try to fix at some point. I even have a ton of Genesis sports games at the moment(close to 100), mostly ex-rentals with damaged labels. Maybe they'll be useful to repair other games(swap the ROM chips, maybe?), as long as they work I'll keep them. Even to just include them in a lot of other games bundled together will be worthwhile.
A friend of mine threw out his old games in the past. He had his NES die on him, so he threw out the games instead of getting next to nothing for them from some game store.

Nothing is wrong with SMB/Duck Hunt, sure it's common but the games are still good. I usually include a copy with any spare systems that I sell off. Often that's what I'm asked by people wanting a system, if I have Super Mario or Duck Hunt. Same with people wanting a Gameboy, people still want Tetris. Don't you check out thrift stores looking for games anyway? Pretty much everyone I know checks out thrift stores for games.

I wouldn't throw out a game unless it was truly ruined and not salvageable.
I'd rather donate it to a thrift store than throw it away.

so, the parents actually fought with the guy, ripped 2 small gameboy games out of his hands, and threw them away. And once they are in the garbage can, you can't touch them. Its the rules.
Why didn't he just put them in his pocket? its not like they were taking up a huge amount of space, he could have just hid the damn things!

Those Gameboy games take up so much space, I toss them into the trash all the time. At one point, I couldn't get down my hallway, it had so many Gameboy games blocking the way. I tried burning them, but the the plastic smell made us sick. In the end, the fire dept. had to come and remove a 7 foot tall ball of molten plastic. Finally, I made a shed out of the gameboy games. My lawnmover and garden tools are now protected from the weather. I can't use them, because I forgot to build a door, but they are dry...what were we talking about?

People have this misconception that there is no demand or value for Mario/Duck Hunt just because it is the most common NES game in the world and probably the common video game PERIOD.
However, if you have 5 copies, 10 or 15 to get rid of, I guarantee you'll find at least one person in any video game forum on the internet who will give you something for them.
Hell, I remember last year we had 2 or 3 guys post threads in the Buy/Sell forum here actively looking to buy a bundle or lot of Mario/Duck Hunt carts for some reason and to a man, they all said "the more, the better." And I bet it happens again this year at some point.
Furthermore, the fact is that a hell of a lot of buyers on Ebay and Craigslist looking for video game systems (such as NES) still prefer that it come with at least one game, even if it is a very common game or a mediocre one.
Anyone selling an NES on Ebay or Craigslist advertised with a "new 72 pin connector" who happens to have a few spare copies of Mario/Duck Hunt would be foolish NOT to include a copy. You're that much more likely to sell the system with a game, any game. Since there are a ton of people selling NES systems on Ebay or Craigslist without a game included, you are able to stand out a little bit from those other sellers.
Same rule applies for someone selling a "lot of 42 NES games" (or pick any number) and they don't bother padding the listing with a couple spare copies of Mario/Duck Hunt because a casual buyer (not necessarily savvy) is oftentimes more concerned with the volume of games than the games actually included. It is just stupid not to hold onto a few extra Mario/Duck Hunt's for one of those listings.
A casual buyer seeing two similar Ebay listings for an NES with a new 72-pin connector installed, at about the same price, is more likely to buy the one with a game included even if that game is Mario/Duck Hunt and even if cynics tell you the game is worth no more than a nickel.

Hell yeah I can find a use for SMB/Duck Hunt carts. Do not ever throw these away O_o.
Same for non-working carts, controllers or consoles, do not throw that! Offer them! They are still all useful for parts.
On the other hand, non-working CD/DVD that cannot be brought back to life even using a resurfacer.. that can go to the trash can IMO.

Hello,
I have been reading these posts and couldn't help but reply
Why throw the stuff out when it can be repaired or passed on or even traded? That's what I do as a side job and I get to play tons of games for absolutley free :)
never throw out cartridge games, even Duck Hunt/Mario. As Xander says, they are needed even for parts.
Empty cartridge shells will be needed in the future for homebrews as well, be it GB, NES, VCS or whatever.

I respect this opinion but I do beg to differ :)
You can still get a lot of gameplay/video footage, screenshots and sound bites from darn near any "non-working" CD/DVD games. Especially after a good resurface.
It is true that they may not be playable in any way, shape or form but I believe they are still usable for providing original screenshots (i.e. not stolen from other web sites) if you are running a web site for a specific console, developer or game series (i.e. Sonic).
Music cd's that are all scratched up can be good for at least 1-2 songs because I've never come across a cd in horrible condition which didn't have at least one or two songs that played in full without skipping. Yes, they may need a resurface first but throwing out or giving away cd's on account of a few songs skipping if others play perfectly is a little dumb. By all means buy a better copy if you need to but tossing the other in the garbage is unnecessary.

Honestly, people like that make me pretty angry, and it's not even because they threw out games. If something is completely broken and/or has no use left to it, fine, stick it in the trash, but nothing else has any business being in there. Our landfills are absolutely loaded with stuff that still would have had value to someone out there. Sure, Game Boy games may not consume a ton of space, but they still should've been given away, sold on eBay, dropped off at a thrift store, etc. Not only are you giving someone else the opportunity to find use in something and keeping stuff out the landfills, but you can also do some good that way. If you, say, drop the games off at a Goodwill or Salvation Army and they sell for however much money, that money will go to charities or to employ people with disabilities that can't otherwise find work. So it's a win-win situation.
When I grew up, we had a picture frame on the wall that said "Waste not, want not". I fully believe in that. Even if you're not poor, think of all the money you'll save if you use everything to its fullest. I see people buy plastic bottles of water day after day, wasting money and contributing to the massive influx of plastic bottles in landfills, while I'll buy one and then use that same bottle for the next few weeks by using my water filter at home to refill it. And stuff like packing peanuts and bubble wrap, I'd NEVER waste a cent actually buying that. I get more than enough from my own packages, and even if I ran out, I can just use newspaper or plastic bags.

Up until two months ago I would have said no. But I listed a lot on here(and ebay) that was super scratched up. It was one demo disc and 3 games for Xbox. The demo even had gook on it. There was no way that shuff was going into my baby. And nobody bid on it and nobody here bought it so I threw that shit out. I even said in my auction listing(and my description on here) that if I didn't sell it in two weeks that it was getting thrown out. I always keep my word.

When I was about 7, I threw out a DENTED copy of Day of the Tentacle. This was my original copy from years before, and had recently gotten the LucasArts Adventure Archives Vol 1. By this time, I had memorized every single line in the game, so the old copy had definitely lived a good life. Having a new, non-dented disk, I threw out the original, but of course kept the box and manual/hint book.
Now, I think that I was an idiot for doing it. The disk was definitely damaged on the label, but it was a silver printed label. The Adventure Archives disk is a color printed label.
I think I also threw away a non-working Tetris Attack board, but I kept the cartrige shell. The board fried when I got the "neat idea" to stack N64, GameShark, GameGenie... Yeah, I think that made up for all those years of taking good care of my games.

Can't do it. Have tried...can't. I keep demo discs. I've got a few busted PS2s that I can't figure out why I'm keeping. On the other hand, a guy I work with was going to throw out his "broken" 360. I offered him $20 for it and he took the deal. I figured even if I had to pay for repair it would still be a decent deal. I called microsoft when I got it and it was still under warranty... got it fixed free, and voila!, cheapest 360 ever. I already have a 360, so I've been sitting on it for future trade credit when I find something good.

I'm usually able to repair most of my stuff (I don't do CD-based systems). I've got alot of controllers I've rebuilt and some lying around that are waiting for parts. I've got numerous NES's lying around that I've repaired or disassembled to use the casing for a modification project. I keep everything...even that copy of Dragon Spirit that still won't work (maybe someday it will magically fix itself!).

So this dude had a 360 that was "broken" and didn't even bother exploring the possibility of it being repaired under warranty. Instead he sells it for $20. LOL. What a tard. I wish I worked with people like that.
