The Circus Charlie arcade game is pretty good also (has more circus events). Unfortunately. I think Circus Charlie is in a league of it's own on NES and in the arcade. It's sad because it's in my top 10 list of best games off all time:)

Circus Charlie was my first NES (famiclone) game, together with Yoko's SFII bootleg. It's on a orange 60-pin bootleg cart I still own. It didn't get the attention it deserved because of the other game but, when I finally gave it a try, I was hooked. Guess I've never seen a similar game either, it's quite an original concept.
