So I know they sell them, so does this mean they buy broken 360's or just take them off peoples hands?
I did call the place, and the employee said he didn't know, and I would have to bring it in and talk to the manager later.

All 360's (as far as I know) from GameStop, get sent out whether they work perfectly or not to be fixed. They just all get checked out and fixed up from my knowledge, hence "refurbished".

GameStop does, in fact, take broken 360s. When I used to work there we would also take in "disc read error" PS2s, all they do is charge a refurbishing fee so you won't get the same amount that you would get for a working console, of course, the only exception to this is that they won't buy in a console that's been opened and/or modded, for obvious reason.

Any idea of a price range?

They charge that same refurbishing fee on trade-in games, and they NEVER FIX THE DAMN DISCS. Do you mean they actually fix the systems?

Yeah, any console bought in under the refurbished SKU has to be sent back to corporate, games are supposed to be sent back as well, but I guess I was the only one who ever actually sent them in. LOL

Dumb question since I never worked at Gamestop or traded in systems there.
So what extent do they test systems or how do they verify DRE's or the RROD?
Some guy walks in off the street when Gamestop is pretty busy and he's packin' a 360 or PS2, what happens?
Some Gamestop flunkie actually get a couple games and test the system out or do they assume the buyer will be honest to them about the condition?

A brand new Arcade unit is $199. How much are you really saving by buying used?

I read over all the posts here and I think I covered everything people are concerned about here. Please read!
Any scratched disc games being sent or kept is up to the discresion of the employee who takes the trade. I work as an ASM at one and being a collector myself I'm usually strict on what I'll accept, I refurbish anything I myself wouldn't want to recieve through a trade here or buying at a store. Any games whose trade in value is less than $1.00 can't be refurbed. Also, any and all systems are tested when someone brings one in (unless the employee/manager on duty is horrible at their job) regardless of how busy we are at the time.
Refurbish fees on systems usually take 30-50% off the actual value we give. Trading in a 360 with a wireless controller gets you $80 store credit with a wired $70. Refurbish fee will be about $30-40 on those. Any games/systems that are taken defective/refurbished are put in a seperate box from any other trades. Each week the managers will gather up all the Defectives items and send them back to our warehouse.
Also just to add, Gamestop used to send out any and all PS3s working or non to the warehouse to be wiped clean. We now do this ourselves. Likewise any working 360 will be kept at the store and sold as used. The only piece GameStop has to send back is the 360 Hard drive (if you have one). But these are taken in seperately from the system and add to your credit.
That all being said, stay away from used 360s. Testing a system for the 5-10 mins we do gives us no perspective on how long these things will last. Our standard warranty is 30 days and I have had people buy used 360s and come back day 32 with a red ring.
Used 360s are 159.99-169.99 depending on the controller, they only have a 30 day warranty (unless you extend it to a year for like $20), and they come with no HD or memory card. Taking all that into account: The new ones have a 1 year company warranty (3 years on your red rings), and even the cheapest, the Arcade, comes with a 256MB memory card.
1.) Used 360 + extended 1yr. warranty + memory card (usually $19.99) = $210
2.) New 360 Arcade (1 year warranty, 256MB memory card) = $200

When you put it like that, I have no idea why anyone would want a used 360. Even if it(used one) were cheaper I'd still want a new one.

incubus421 is pretty spot on with his post. We have used systems at our store that either come in off the street or are sent to us from Corporate. Just today we got 2 in from a shipment from corporate, one was an elite and the other was a Pro. As incubus pointed out, they do NOT come with the hard drive.
My store also has refurbished units in stock that come from Microsoft. These units DO have a 20GB hard drive in them and we sell them for $249.99 + tax.
Personally I would never buy a refurbished unit of any system. I generally persuade my customers to do the same. I don't own a 360 yet and figured my best bet is to get the Arcade unit and pick up the other items separately.

Yeah, that probably would be your best bet. I've heard the new "Jasper" units, the ones with the built in flash memory, are supposed to have a lower failure rate.

Well, I took in my Xbox to Gamestop today, and got a total of 0 dollars. The guy there said he didn't even know what the bottom right ring being red meant. So yeah, that stinks. I did sell:
Army of Two
Mortal Kombat (DC)
Mario Party 8
Metroid Prime 3 (actually liked this game)
I got 76 dollars for all those, so I'll probably go back next week to buy an 360 Arcade bundle.
Looks like my 360 now though has one place to....garbage.

I wouldn't be so hasty to trash your 360 without finding out what it means. With the bottom right ring being red it could be a number of problems here is a helpful link:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/lofiversion/index.php/t484726.html
a couple of these errors are fixable with some work involved. I'm also a bit surprised they wouldn't even take your 360 as defective. Corporate has contacted stores a number of times letting us know we can take defective systems.
In any case, good luck!

A buddy of mine had a 360 he took to GS with a RROD and they wouldn't take it. The clerk hinted that if he could "get it to work" he'd get the full credit for it. A towel later, he traded it in.
