I think this might belong in What's It Worth?

That price is a bit outrageous, although I suppose people have the right to charge whatever it's worth to them.

That's about $550-600 overpriced, i'd say. Geez. I guess it only takes one person with a wad of cash burning a hole in the pocket...

Even a NIB Twin Fami wouldn't be worth half that price.

That seller has a Barcode Battler for $85 - yikes!

It's a little overpriced by Japanese standards, but it is rare to find a brand new famicom. They are almost always yellowing, but this one looks completely new and a bright white colour. It would be around $350-$450 in Japan simply because it is so hard to find brand new bright white famicoms. Definitely a collectors item!

And if you don't live in Japan you've gotta travel all the way to Japan to buy one so it's cheaper to get it via the auction! He's priced it up, but hey, the guy has to make a profit.

Get one off Risingstuff.com their prices are very reasonable. I'm not entirely sure if they would be able to special order a NEW Famicom, but definitely one complete in box. I have to wonder how it's even possible to tell if that Famicom is new or just in "new" condition (ie, doesn't look like it was beaten w/ a yellow ugly stick).

[edit: on top of that the "box has a crack" according to this seller. wtf? charge taht much and box is... i'm assuming torn.]

if i were to travel to japan, how hard would it be to find a new, unused famicom system?

Very hard. You can buy reconditioned Famicoms from Tea 4 Two ( http://www.tea4two.jp/famicom.php/ ) but even they are pretty expensive! To find a new, unused Famicom system would require a fair amount of luck.

Even famous reseller stores like Super Potato / Trader / etc. don't have any unused Famicoms in stock.

You still can find NIB Famicoms on Yahoo.JP auctions on a regular basis for $200-$300 on average. The original release with the square buttons tend to go for more. If you add shipping and service charges, it's still way less than that auction.

It seems to me that Japanese sellers tend to price their stuff much higher than American sellers.

I find A/V Famicoms to be a lot easier to find boxed and everything. But then, how long were they in production? :P

"It will not believe. However, that's right. It is an intact article."

Honestly, that is kick ass. A new Famicom system, is not something you find every day. Although I could never spend that kind of cash on it.

When I was in Tokyo, Super Potato had at least two new famis, but that was half a year ago, so they probably sold them.

You can buy used famis for pretty cheap even from overpriced stores like Super Potato.

I've purchased quite a bit of stuff from Carl's shop. Prices are reasonable, shipping is low and items are quick to arrive.

I, too, have purchased a bunch of stuff from Carl and just ordered a twin Fami and some games from him. Having purchased several handbills from him I can say that his stuff comes in good shape/quickly and he is very easy to deal with.

carl, i will check out your website. the difference between a square button famicom and circle button famicom is just the buttons?

if the auction is in the $400 range, then i'd be all over it. i missed out on owning the original famicom. and so, $400, as much as it may seem, is a small price to pay.

Thanks!

Well, square button's were rubber, round buttons are hard plastic. The bottom casing on square button's is smooth. Round buttons had a rough base.

The Square button is also the ORIGINAL and only was sold in 1983. This makes it the most sought after Famicom.

For design reasons and because square buttons don't feel as comfortable as round, Nintendo changed to the round button famicom late 83, 1984.

Otherwise they should both function the same.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Carl
