I have finished making a handheld portable Playstation 1 console system in a vacuum formed case.

Brilliant! That's one of the sweetest mods I've ever seen... Cudos!

Very impressive, but that doesn't look like it would comfortable or easy to play at all. Also, wouldn't having the disc exposed like that make it easy for dust to get to the laser eye?

Why didn't you go with a stick/button combo below the screen? The placement of controls seems to be a turnoff.

Sweet job!

Much cleaner, smoother and more ergonomic looking than your multi console mod kit(s).

The video was enough to convince me that the stick placement was an acceptable design choie.

Cheers and keep up the good work!

I too thought the sticks should go below, but then I remembered- it's a PS1 :) Most games either don't support the sticks, or don't require them- those that do usually only use one stick for movement and on for camera, rarely relying on the sticks/dpad like modern games.

Very nice unit, awesome job.

A thin sheet of perspex (6 thou) can cover the windows and stop dust getting in.

Primarily, I prefer d-pad than joystick; the Playstation needs both options (some games like Ape Escape need right joystick for inventory), and it is fine using the joystick, as per the video. Having the joysticks at the top therefore makes sense as easy to use but primary use is d-pad. Only downside is it isn't as easy as it should be to use the shoulder buttons when using the joysticks (fine with d-pad), however as the joysticks are not primary controls this isn't an issue.
