I was reading about this the other day and wondered if anyone has tried it. If so, what are your computer specs and what do you think? I'd love to finally play arcade-perfect versions of some of my favorite arcade games at home.

ps - I'd love it if Sega and other pubs made these games available to buy here, but that doesn't seem to be an option at this point.

My computer can't run it but on my parent's computer (nothing great, it was like one of those Compaq Office Depot Christmas [not black Friday] bundles from two years ago) I've had pretty good success running Model 2 games. It wasn't MAME and I can't for the life of me remember the name of the emulator but I believe it was Nebula. The computer is decent but by no means a gaming machine so my experiences may not reflect the emulator's performance. Granted, this was like eight months ago.

I only tried to run a few ROM images since I was really just messing around with the emulator. The interface could use some rework but it's useable to load games. I remember Indy 500 ran pretty well with some occasional missing graphics here and there but the game ran fine. Daytona USA seemed to have the controls messed up. From what I remember Sega Touring Car Championship seemed to run the best and was actually pretty fun to pay with a standard gamepad (PS1 controller through an adapter, analog mode).

Just the same, I ended up putting Nebula away and playing Virtua Racing on MAME instead.

Nice timing considering a new version of elsemi's Model 2 Emulator (http://nebula.emulatronia.com/) just came out. Virtua Fighter 2 is playable now but pretty messed up. Haven't tested Virtua Cop 2 yet.

Really impressive stuff all the same. Ran ok on my Athlon 2500, but my C2D E6600 w/ GeForce8800GT cuts through it all like melted butter.

Looking forward to testing Rail Chase 2. Used to enjoy playing that one back in the arcades.

The issue with the messed up controls in Daytona was fixed in the version before this last version, so that must've been a while ago when you tried.

It's a pretty good emulator. It uses HLE for the graphics, but it manages to do it without so many of the usual issues you associate with that (bad masks, jacked up 2D elements, etc). The filtering doesn't look authentic to the arcade, but that might be getting picky.

It's odd that Model 1 emulation isn't really even all the way there yet. I'd love to see Model 3 get somewhere too, but at the rate it's going in MAME that's not happenening any time soon.

The only game I have for Model 2 is Indy 500, though its the Japanese version I think, because it has KPH not MPH. I don't have a machine fast enough to run it well. The emulation is pretty good though, and it is Nebula.

It might not be japanese. Maybe its just the way the dip switches are set.

Japan isn't the only country that uses the metric system anyway, but the U.S. is the only country that uses imperial system.

I wish SO BAD that Sega would release these games for playstation 3 store or xbox store. Especially with support for my Logitech G25 wheel. I would be in heaven... (And would pay $20 a game no problem)

Same here, man. I was pretty damn happy that Konami got on the ball and finally decided the time was right for a home port of GTI Club+, so now Sega needs to get with the program and start porting some classic stuff over :(

Hell, just contact it out to Sumo Digital, you know they'll handle it right (look Outrun 2 / 2006 / their new Outrun port / GTI Club+ ). PSN versions of House of the Dead or Virtua Cop 2 with Guncon 3 support would be absolutely tits, as would PSN/XBLA versions of any number of Sega racing games. Especially Scud Race *swoon*

Thanks to this thread and a recently purchased new PC, I tried out the latest version of the model 2 emulator over the weekend and had a lot of fun with it. My PC is a triple core AMD Phenom with 4GB RAM and a 9800 GT. The games I played were pretty close to perfect, especially Daytona, and I even pulled out the old Thrustmaster Nascar Pro 2 Force Feedback wheel which was fully supported and worked great. With the new 22" monitor and the wheel it almost felt like I was at Dave & Busters playing the real deal.

Now to figure out how I can get another PC down there for some linked racing - I saw a video on Youtube of an 8 PC set up playing linked Daytona...sweet!

Unfortunately I can't change the dipswitches in the emulator, or at least in the older version. As for Indy 500/Daytona the reason they have not been rereleased is licensing. Daytona (NASCAR) probably wants a fortune to do so, and Indy (Indianapolis Motor Speedway) is not far behind. I am a huge fan of both types of racing, and sadly, NASCAR's greed has led to EA-only games, which suck. Indianapolis's marketing people are completely out of touch, which is why nearly every Indy-type game since the old Papyrus PC games have stunk.

YOU INVOKED THE NAME OF PAPYRUS!

Hey, have you checked out Kaemmer's newest venture, iRacing (http://www.iracing.com/)? I've been wanting to sign up, but I think that it might just be a bit too hardcore for me (considering the subscription cost and all).

I miss the glory days of Papyrus :(
