I just recently bought this game for nes based on a good VC review by IGN. I adored the first one, but steered clear of the sequel based on the negative response I had heard. As it turns out, I really enjoy the game. Not nearly as much as it's prequel, but it's certainly fun. Was wondering what you guys had thought about the game. I hear the difficulty of the game gets pretty tough towards the end, but as was with Startropics. Anyhoo. Just wanted to hear other opinions.

Been a long time since I plugged this game in and finished it, but I remember it not being quite as fun as the original. It wasn't bad...not as good as the original, but it was OK.

It was released late in the lifespan of the NES, when most developers had shifted to the SNES - which could be another reason why people never played it. The graphics and whatnot certainly paled in comparison with what was out on other systems at the time.

An OK game, not the best and it has pretty bad controls for a late game but I did finish both games.

Startropics II came out too late in the NES's lifespan, I didn't really have any interest in new NES games at the time.

Did it have any cool feelies like Startropics did? That is still my greatest gaming memory, "put the letter in the water."

The game was terrible compared to the first game in the series. There is a reason why it is obscure.

This is one of those games I never even knew existed until I found the cart in a flea market (which I promptly bought, obviously :P) I took it home and started playing it. I don't find it bad at all, but it can't touch the original. It's been about 5 years since I've played either of them, and while Startropics will always remain fresh in my mind, II on the other hand I can't even remember anything about, other than the fact you could run diagonally, haha. :)

I liked it quite a bit, but the original was better.

It didn't seem to have the polish to it like the first game did. Though I guess since it was one of the very last licensed games to be released, they may have rushed it out.

I own both Star Tropics games. Amazing games. I like the first one alot better, but the second was a great game regardless.

I don't see how people are saying the second has poor control, though. The control was better than the original if you ask me.

Here's my review I wrote for this game a while back.

I prefer the control of the first one, because it was unique. The same control mechanics wouldn't work in this game because most enemies attack diagonally which I believe to be one of the main reasons for change in control. All in all, I'm enjoying this game very much. Not nearly as good as the first, but still amusing.

It's been awhile since I've played Zoda's Revenge, but I really loved it when it was released, and at the time I DID think it was better than the original. The original did have better music, though.

I still hear the first games dungeon theme in my head on a daily basis it seems like. The reason why I love the first one so much is because it was comprised of everything that made up my childhood. Yo-yos, dungeons, aliens and adventure. God I love that game.

I wish they would have made more games in this series. Hell, Japan only got the first game for GBA!

I played through both games back-to-back a few years ago, and it was such an awesome experience that perfectly encapsulated the idea of summer gaming in my mind that now I strive to recapture that experience every time I pick out what I want to play over the summer. It's a hard call for me to make in terms of picking a superior game since they're both excellent and roughly on par. The sequel definitely has much more natural controls, but it can't touch the perfect tropical atmosphere of the original and its accompanying music. The time traveling was interesting, but it didn't carry the same kind of magic as in, say, Chrono Trigger. But that ending sequence of Zoda's Revenge, that was just tops. :)

playing Startropics (the first one) makes me long for simpler days when I was a kid. It totally embodies a summer game vibe, that's when I first picked it up. If there was nothing going on, I'd play this game till late night. I just started Startropics again tonight!

"put the letter in the water."

Win.

I remember running to the nearest sink I could to get the code out of that letter.

I remember getting stuck there not knowing what the heck to do because I got my first copy of the game as a loose cart. I looked up the code online and wondered how you were supposed to find the code.

Years later when rebuying my collection I got the manual and letter with my game and was like "oh, now I see"

Played them both. Beaten them both.

The first is my favorite game ever. Zoda's Revenge isn't as good as the original, but it's still a good game to play.

Does it still have the asinine hopscotch segments from the original? Also, the submarine maze on the VERY SECOND ISLAND held me up. I'll get back to it sometime to beat that, but it's unnecessarily confusing (and in true NES fashion, my progress is blocked by lone palm trees and the like. Joy.)

I can see it as being better than the original Zelda (that doesn't take much), but this already isn't my favorite genre. Slow action. I love the secret room that kills you in the first dungeon though. Hopefully there's more tricks like that.

The submarine maze is easy. You just have to look closely at the water, and the spots where you can dive will be waving. There aren't too many ways you can go, so if you find yourself going the wrong way, just backtrack a tiny bit.

The graveyard level was the most annoying part of Star Tropics for me personally. Zoda's Revenge is decent but not nearly as good as the first game.

I want to like StarTropics but it suffers from stiff controls and those goofy jump panels. One boss requires oyu to navigate them and hit switches while dodging fireballs, but it's so awkward I just gave up on it.

I totally enjoyed this game and didn't thought it was that bad compared to the first one. I don't remember it having that bad controls but I can always give it a second try to see what you guys mean. It has been over 10 years since I last played it.

I know, but I still apparently have missed at least one.

I honestly prefer the controls of the first one. I think it adds a unique aspect on the game. Call me crazy. I longed for those controls while I played the 2nd one, only in the second one the enemies attack almost exclusively in diagonal direction.

the tile-jumping is very unique and if you play it enough it becomes pretty fun and you get into a natural rhythm sorta. The second one in some ways does suffer for not continuing the jumping, agreed. Still a cool game though.

I remember liking 2 and getting pretty far....one of many games which went missing....must beat on cousin's fiancee until they appear (long story)

That letter was a bugger. I didn't have internet at the time, and manually searched every number til I got it (yep 000-001-002, etc.)

I like the available weapons in the first one better. Controls, I didn't really notice, and the bosses are easier in the first one. The puzzles are better in the first one as well.

That's not to say that Zoda's Revenge is a bad game. It's definitely worth playing if you liked the first one.

I played it as a proto back in the day - I HAD no freaking letter.

6 months later I was talking about it at my dentist's of all things - and he remembered the code. I fired it back up again as soon as I got home and finished it that weekend.

I thought I lost the letter but I just looked back in the box and it's still there, untouched (I didn't dip it in water) and still good.

I love how it says "DO NOT EAT THIS PAPER!!!" in big letters at the bottom.

I finally sat down and played through it for the first time last summer. I thought it was decent...not as good as the first one obviously, but definitely worth the $2.00 that it usually sells for.
