Hello all. I picked up a loose, dusty PS2 (scph 30001 r) today at Goodwill and it's got a problem. Discs don't spin. It powers up, has picture and sound, and the tray opens and closes, but no matter what type of disc I put in it (so far I've tried ps2 silver, ps1 and audio cds) nothing happens. It just sits at the browser/system configuration screen. Doesn't give me any error messages. I took it apart and blew a lot of dust out of it but that didn't help. Any ideas or suggestions? I have 7 days, it's no big deal to return it but I'm kind of curious/hoping it's an easy fix. TIA

It could be just about anything. But you should check for the minor issues first such as making sure that the ribbon cables to the laser assembly are properly attached...Worst case, and by the sounds of it, could be a dead laser all together...

I bought a PS2 from a thrift store a few years ago with the same result (no disk read). I figured the motor is out in the Cd drive and left it at that. I was thinking about replacing the drive, but at today's (and tomorrow's) prices for the system, you could just get one from a game shop or other store that sells them for not much more than the cost of replacing parts.
