Flipnic on PS2 is a cracker for it's obscureness/the fact it's utterly barking mad. Anything by Llamasoft also qualifies.

One game I've been favoring of recent is an arcade game called Nekketsu Kuno Kunio-Kun. It was renamed Renegade in the US and paved the way for other beat em ups, and is the predecessor to Double Dragon.

Journey to Silius (NES) - good side-scrolling shooter
Steel Empire (Genesis) - solid 2D shoot-'em-up with unique-to-the-genre steampunk setting
SOS (SNES) - interesting game in which you have 20 real-time minutes to escape a sinking ocean liner
Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena (PSX) - great fantasy strategy game with excellent replay value

I bought a Game Wave DVD player at a thrift store, and picked up a bunch of games on clearance at a Toys 'R Us. Most of the games are not worth mentioning, but Letter Zap is strangely addictive. It's a word game where you either have a block of letters or one large multiplayer block of letters, and you have to string together connected letters to form words. The longer, the higher points you'll get. I've really gotten into this one in the past few days.

Yes, Pick Axe Pete is a good one.

I also would put Atari 2600 Spike's Peak and Bruce Lee for Commodore 64 in a top 10.

"Popular and well known" are relative, but I'll just go by my own standards (in no particular order):

Star Ocean: Blue Sphere
Wonder Project J2
Tail Concerto
Dragon Spirit
Goemon's Great Adventure

Lots more I'd like to list, though, as much of my gaming is with obscure stuff.

-Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together(SNES/PSX)
-Arc the Lad 2(PSX)
-Brigandine Legend of Forsena/Brigandine Grand Edition(either game)(PSX)
-Mobile Suit Gundam Encounters in Space(PS2)
-God Hand(PS2)

My top three not as well known/liked/played are also one in the same with my top three favorite games. Encounters in Space is obviously known to some Gundam fans only, but a majority of Gundam fans seem to not have played the title(I'd say it'd probably be a favorite of anyone who plays, Gundam fan or not.) Then there's God Hand which hardly anyone knows about and those that do it's a 50/50 chance on them liking it from what I've seen. God Hand is easily my favorite beat em up of all time.

Fifth place was actually the hardest for me to judge because I had a few games in mind and really just weeding down which I thought was liked least and known more.

Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen(SNES/PSX.) It got a release on the VC so now it's really well known, but most RPG fans for some reason or another don't enjoy this game. What's not to love about Ogre Battle. The only thing wrong with this game in my opinion are how long some of the battles will end up taking, especially if you want to get everything.

Astyanax(NES.) It's not that well known and it does have quite a few people who don't like it(well, sortof well known to fans of older games, but doesn't have many fans or people that like it much.) The game has quite a few platform areas and death pits, but come on, it's not hard.

The Great Battle 5(SNES,) though specifically, the entire series. Do you like Final Fight, Valkyrie Densetsu, Contra, Wild Guns, etc? The entire series plays like alot of other popular games and while not being as good, definitely are close. The Great Battle 5 is like Wild Guns and Contra gameplay changing up between each stage, being my favorite of the series. Alot of importers have probably played these, but I doubt most gamers would just because being based off of SD versions of giant robot anime characters.

Tail Concerto

Great game. Brings back memories of when nearly every Atlus game was awesome.

I'm not such a fan of Hyper or GunBot though - you can basically beat the first stage of Technosoft's title without moving around, while Compile's is rather primitive put alongside later titles, like Crisis Fringe or Star Radish. Hate the final stage too, with the ball pit bubble things.

I'm gonna have to do two lists here. One are games that are obscure by average. casual gamer standards, and one that's obscure by DP standards (tough I know- and no doubt most people here will have heard of them- but I think most will agree they're not 'everyday'). I'm also sticking to DC or earlier.

Mildly obscure

1. Tempest 2000 (JAG)
2. Wonderboy 3 (SMS)
3. Power Stone 2 (DC)
4. Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus (PS1- borderline obscurity this one)
5. Dragon's Revenge (MD)

DP-brand obscure

1. Psycho Pinball (MD)
2. Pushover (Amiga again, borderline)
3. Flipnic (PS2- breaking my 'DC or earlier' rule but definitely obscure)
4. Devil Dice (PS1)
5. Super Bub (PS1 Yaroze homebrew)

Mystaria (Sega Saturn) aka, Blazing Heroes.

Wonder Project J (SNES) japan only release, later emulated and translated into english.

Burn Cycle (Philips CD-i) FMV video gaming at its absolute best.

God Hand (PS2) It seems to be known of by enthusiasts and collectors, but honestly it should have been even more popular, imo. Final Fight on some serious crack. Awesome game!

Battle Tanx: Global Assault (N64) This game has been seriously overlooked for a long time and i'm one of the few I know that brings it up on a constant basis. Most addictive fun 4 player party game on the system, ranks with Goldeneye and Smash Bros., single player is nothing special, but the multiplayer is still among the best.

I agree! There's no point in arguing, because here k8track is right. It doesn't matter when the thread was created, what matters is when the thread was last posted-in; that determines its actual "oldness".

So with that in mind, I took the liberty of merging the two threads and leaving a temporary redirect so people can find their way here easily from Classic Gaming.

It's not something to "feel" one way or the other about and take sides on - it's a rule. It's the way we handle duplicate threads here, and it's pretty concrete. If a thread hasn't been posted-in for at least a year, it's ok to post a duplicate. Otherwise the dupe can be locked or more recently, merged, since that's something we can do now with the newer forum software.

K8track happened to chime in this time knowing about how we handle dupe threads here and linking to a still-relevant one, but non-staff members do it all the time, and I've appropriately locked/merged those threads too without a second thought. Why, because I feel the same way? No, because when it comes to how we do things here you're either right or wrong, and it matters flibble-all who you are or how I "feel" about it, or you. When you're right, you're right. He is, you aren't. End of story.

So please - move on, and spare us anymore of this passive-aggressive nonsense.

Thank you. :-)

Of course! That's why I merged your thread instead of just locking it - not because other members were taking part and I didn't want to just kill that off, mind you; it was purely out of malevolent intentions of wieldin' mah power and feedin' mah ego!

And yes, I was born in 1983. But you forgot to mention that I joined the forums on 10-10-03, that I have 2,757 posts (that's 1.37 posts a day!), my vaguely emo-sounding AIM screenname that I'm too lazy to change just because I've had it for so many years, and other arbitrary facts you can find out by viewing my profile. (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/member.php?u=2720) Also, I can do math - 500.

Before that I believe. I read somewhere the Adam version was also on the Atari 2600 and 5200, maybe other systems as well.

The full name was Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom.

Played that game a lot back in the day. Too bad I don't still have the Adam... it crashed and burned (literally, there was smoke) when I was a kid. Moved up to a 7800 after that.

Well both of mine fall into the Game Gear, oddly enough:

Dragon Crystal : THis game totally ruled, it was turn based kinda, but in a weird weird way...there is this little egg that follows you around and with exp -turns into a baby dragon, then the dragon gets bigger and then he grows armour..and you know what the best part is? i dont know what happenes after that cause the game is hard as Frank Dux...oi vey..PS if anyone has ever beaten this game, let me know, drop me a mail or something, cause id love to know what happens, i been trying to beat this thing since the 8th grade, and im 23 now;(

I remember that one!! That was my first roguelike...but yeah, it WAS hard...I've only gotten far enough to see the egg hatch once, and I used to play that game a LOT.

Check out Shiren the Wanderer or the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games (not kidding), they're turn-based in the same way, also feature randomized levels, and are insanely hard...

Actually, I've only tried Shiren myself, but I've heard the Pokemon Mystery Dungeons are just as punishing. I've got the rom sitting on my acekard, I'll have to give it a spin one of these days.

I add a few more:

Gameboy:
BC Kid 2, different to the orginal.
Flash on the gb
Ninja Gaiden Shadow, awesome, and I don't really like NG games, cept maybe the arcade version.
Donkey Kong Land, not just a port, almost like a totaly different game can't say that for the rest of the DKL and DKC ports though.
Kid Dracula, really nifty Castlevania lite game by Konami.
Hammering Harry VS the Ghost building Company, really good.
The first two TMNT games.
Flintstones platformer, better than the 16 bit counter parts imo.

I must say that the GB had some awesome games in it's time.

Blade on the gbc almost like spartan x type game, with some cool moves.

NES:
Mr. Gimmick, Kirby beater?
Power Blade 2, much better than the first one.
Wagyan Land 3, lite-platformer
Keroppi 2, lite-platformer
Code Name - Viper, awesome Capcom version of Rolling Thunder?
Daiku no Gen San 2, aka Hammering Harry 2
Hammering Harry, a really cool port of the arcade version with lots of extra stuff.
Adventure Island 4, The AI adventure type game I liked because it was more about platforming than metrovaning around most of the time.
Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 2 aka Kid Nikki 2, not that anyone knows who kid nikki is?, like both games, equally.
Little Samson: Really fun megaman-lite type game, I just dragon all the way.

SMS:
Master of Darkness, lots of style, damn this game is awesome, it's like a lost Castlevania game, graphics are awesome for a SMS, you'd think it was early 16bit? I don't know why the hell they didn't realease it for the genny, maybe cause Konami would sue their pants off?
Batman Returns, so much better than the Genny version, it's really cool.
Black Belt, man this is way better than spartan x imo.
