You know the Three R's of Recycling, don't you?

Reuse old code, art, sprites and character animation

Reduce originality and new ideas

Recycle old games for a new, younger market

Anyway, Capcom, king of Recyclers (although Konami and Nintendo have a shot at the throne with their recent announcements) celebrates 15 years of Street Fighter. They've opened a new web page here (Japanese only):
http://www.capcom.co.jp/sf15th/

P.S. I still love Capcom

Haha, that reuse old sprits is so true... SNK vs. Capcom 2. Morrigan sprite from the original darkstalkers, hahaha.

Eh, every company does it though...Sammy and SNK both reuse sprites. Nothing new there. If you want to get technical most of the KOF sprites are pretty much the same..hell Iori has had the same basic sprite (with some more animation added) since 95.

Yeah, it's not uncommon but it's pathetic. If they could take some time and use some high-res sprites some of the more recent 2d fighters could be really impressive, MVC2 for example. Hell, if they just redid all their sprites and then re-released the game as MVC3 it'd sell like all hell.

I'd rather have a solid game engine than new sprites.

Hi res sprites are cool and all, but I don't need them to have fun playing a solid fighting game.

They do need to update that Morrigan sprite though. LOL

Anyways, back to the 15th anniversary of Street Fighter, I hope we see an all new SF game, new sprites, 2D backgrounds, less of the older characters and more new ones, to commemorate the 15th.

Oh yeah, I greatly enjoyed MVC2 and on occasion still do. If the damn price would come down on the PS2 port I'd pick it up.

It's just that the sprites are SO OLD. I mean what the crap, could you imagine that working for ANY other game, ever? Reuse Cloud and Tifa from FF7 in FF13? heh. Reuse Madden 97 models from PSX on Madden 2004?

Most of them look fine to me. Sure they could use updating, but it's a sprite based 2D game, it doesn't need updating every year.

As for the Madden comparison, they aren't using sprites from '97 in the Street Fighter series. SF3 was all new sprites, and one of the best looking 2D fighters ever. It looks better than the GG series, IMO.

In CvS2 as far as I know, the SNK characters got new sprites, the Capcom ones didn't. The SNK ones were great, but the Capcom sprites didn't look out of date or anything, except Morrigan. And when SNK vs Capcom comes out, the Capcom characters will be new sprites, and maybe some of the SNK ones.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 had 56 characters. Did you expect them to draw new sprites for every old character?

Each game doesn't have to have all new sprites.

I haven't played MvsC2 in a bit, but I think that some of the problems arise from the switching of the characters, and trying to keep all of them in memory, right? Streetfighter III had all sorts of great animation for the characters. But, I think that Capcom couldn't use them because in MvsC2, it needed to store six characters in memory as opposed to the two in SF3.

The Morrigan animation is truly awful. It looks like they've taken animation out for this game. It so jumpy.

I don't know where they will go with a new game... I truly hope that it wouldn't go 3-D. But, I still think that SF3 is the peak of Capcom's fighting games. I really don't like the 3-D backgrounds, they look so out of place. SF3 is still a beautiful game to watch, and play for me. But, it's been so long since there has been any 2-D fighter that I'll take anything at this point. I'm even playing Astra Superstars lately. Go Lettuce!

GGX2

Not Capcom, but still a damn fun 2D fighter.

SF3 is alot of fun...it's kinda sad really, I try playing all these other characters like Makoto, Q, Oro, Hugo, Ken, yet it always comes back to me playing Elena, as she's the first one I picked, and the only one I really have alot of success with.

GGXX isn't too bad...Slayer's infinite is dumb as fuck though.

Yeh, Capcom is an excellent company, but i swear, they've really turned me away from alotta of their games by that "more of the same" feel. And whats sad is that I waited so many years for Capcom to make SF3 and when it finally came I was like "WTF!". Great animation, good gameplay, but some of the most hideous character designs I've seen in a fighter. It had me wihsing they did recycle some old sprites, heh. I'm hoping that Capcom releases and anniversary game for SF that includes EVERY SF character from SF1-SF3:3 Strike. It'll never happen, as it will require huge sprite re-working, but it would be cool 8-)

I dunno... I liked the characters from SF3 series by the end of 3.3 (Fight for the Future). Gill is terrible though. What a half-assed boss! This was the best that they could think of?

I obviously like Fight for the Future best... more characters and the classic bonus stages too. I loved playing the DC version, setting the damage to zero, and using the Grading system to see who won.

About GGX2. Haven't got it yet. I have GGX Plus on the PS2, and it is good, but it plays like Samurai Shodown for me in some ways. Not that its a bad thing, but some of the characters are a little unbalanced. Personally, I like Capcom's fighters the best. I do love the look of Guilty Gear though. It feels like you're playing an anime. Less guitars though would be nice.
