Very excited about this. The whole WWII FPS thing has been done to death EXCEPT when it's done by DICE. Airplanes are back!

Wow, so BF 1943 is being released on XBLA and PSN? That's awesome, I never played BF '42, but I'll cerainly be looking into this game once it's released.

I believe it's 1942. :D
Actually, the Wake Island map looks like an enhanced version of its 1942 bretheren, hence perhaps the 1943 designation. The graphics look more detailed.
I would like to see Battlefield 1918, like Codename: Eagle or Iron Storm for the PC.

I just like the fact that it's on XBLA. That's neat.

Neat, I'll probably wind up playing the hell out of this. I generally don't play online-only shooters, but Battlefield 1942 was the exception. Hopefully they don't screw it up and fragment the market like they did with the first game and its retail expansions. Take a lesson from Epic's (old :( ) playbook and release that shit for free. Road to Rome was great, but too many people never picked it up.

Kotaku has a nice (brief) preview up today...
http://kotaku.com/5148080/battlefield-1943-pacific-preview-a-much-needed-upgrade
Essentially this is a HD/Frostbite engine upgrade of Battlefield 1942. Download only via XBLA, PSN, or PC and $15 to $20. Can't wait.

Wait until I tell my buddy, he's going to flip. He played BF42 on the PC religiously for quite some time and got me into it for a brief period. If he decides to buy it I might and play with him. It'll be like going back in time a few years! :D

3 classes and 3 maps?
Sounds too stripped down. Bet they sell new classes, maps, and so on through microtransactions and completely fragments whatever online community develops.

There's still a good count of 1942 players online even today. The collection set for the PC is $10 new in most anywhere you go. I'm interested in seeing how 1943 pans out.

EA sure has been going crazy with the stripped-down Battlefields lately, haven't they? First Heroes, now this. I'm hoping it won't be expensive on PC and will be available in stores (1200 MS points or whatever - $15), but I'm wondering about the planes since it already felt rather tight flying about in 1942 (although the slower speed of the classic prop fighters should help; flying Battlefield 2's jets was a matter of circling around constantly).
I'm not expecting it to be incredibly polished - they mentioned the Japanese snipers use a K98 instead of the appropriate rifle because they couldn't afford to build another. It does have a better engine though.
I'll probably play it and like it.
I will say that CoD5: World at War looks pretty slick on 360 though (so PC should be even nicer).

Stripped down? Its meant to be an online only game for $15. Of course they aren't going to put in lots of maps and classes.
They also said they are going to release a 4th map once a certain amount of online kills have been reached.

Sounds familiar - remember the Battlefield 1942 update that came out for the much-maligned Battlefield: Vietnam? (Don't actually remember how many maps that had; it did keep the usual number of classes however.)

Those are some seriously easy achievements. Shame my buddy who I was going to play this with has no Live Gold, or money to buy this and a subscription at this time. Oh well. Once he's connected we'll likely play this. :)

Airplane are available after a total comined kills of 42,000,000 Kills. There are 3 maps to start then after the kill target is reached then another map will appear then you get the planes.

It's $15. In fairness, it's probably the biggest and most ambitious game available on XBLA to date. Besides, Microsoft doesn't even consider this an "Arcade" game anyways. They're treating it almost like a download-only full release.

In what ways do they not consider it a arcade game? Its listed as one on their website, Xbox Live Arcade is visibily marked prominantly on the listing page for it in multiple locations, its going to be released under the XBLA category, etc.
Therealqtip, its $15.

There are planes on the other maps that will be free to use immediately. They're not restricted to that locked map.

I'm not sure what makes you think being online only (The first games were online only and I don't think any of the main BF series ever got a compelling single player mode) has to do with it. Nor do I think stripping it down compared to the original was ever obvious, though not completely unexpected when considering that the original PC game was on multiple CD's.
No one expected (Or expects in the case of PD) other remakes like Banjo Tooie to just be half the levels, or are expecting Perfect Dark to lose the single player campaign and just keep half the multiplayer maps and weapons, etc.
So I stand behind saying I was disappointed that it was stripped down from the original. And my point still stands for my opinion of what any DLC will do to the game if they decide to expand the experience.

The 360 has some big lag going on. DICE announced this morning that they actually ran out of server space. To play this morning you had to wait until someone left the game. Unbelieveable. The demand for this game was beyond anything they anticipated. They're apparently added servers throughout the day. Good old EA and their stingy server capacity.

Ugh, server problems. Just downloaded it but I can't get into any games. This makes me wonder if we'd be having these same problems if EA were using XBL's servers instead of their own.

Wah? Host their own servers? I'm guessing it's so they can pull the plug on the old Madden and other annual sports games they release so people will be forced to buy the new ones.

I'm glad that they are taking some responsibility to quickly fix this problem(or so they say) but is that enough? How many times have we been sold broken products by these clowns. Granted, I love most of the Battlefield games but they all have had crushing issues for the first several months that should of not made it out of beta. EA needs to take the customer's money ONLY when the product works as it should.

This is awful that I can't play a game I spent $15 on. I tried to find matches during the day, no luck. Finally got into one, played a couple rounds. It was underwhelming after all the wait. The hype about the graphics on IGN etc. is just unbelievable. It looks like a more aliased version of Battlefield Bad Company. Can we just call it what it is? This game is only $5 less than Bad Company now, anyway, and only has one mode...personally, I liked the maps and setting in BC more, but YMMV.
I tried to find a match tonight and it wouldn't let me in. What a load of crap. An online only game needs one thing...servers. And EA evidently provided like 1 of them for the entire XBL populous. Sure, they're fixing it, but seriously, when your game is ONLINE only, make sure I can, you know, play online. From Day 1.
I think this game is a solid 8/10 once the servers get up and running, and it brings back some memories of 1942, but don't believe the hype on all the review websites. If you haven't played Bad Company, please run out and pick it up now. It's $19 on Amazon and worth every penny. Fantastic game.

I'm still grinding my way towards 100 matches... 11 hours of gametime, and I know i'm past 50 (should be in the high 60's). Its fun, but once I get my last achievement, I don't know how much i'll still play it.

I got this for PSN a couple of days ago and when I get a chance to play, it's a blast. I pretty much stick with being a rifleman as that seems to net me more kills, though I'm getting to be fairly deadly with jeeps.

For me it's always the combo of rifleman and tank. I got all achievements, but I guess I'll still play some more from time to time. It's a very fun game. Way too few maps though ...

I just downloaded this last night and had a lot of fun. I assume that it will be more fun as I get better with the planes. If anyone wants to play with me, the live tag is Dahnosaur. We could get a squad going or something of the like.

I don't think getting better with the planes has much of anything to do with enjoyment of the game. Planes are just another aspect, just like Tanks/Jeeps/AAGuns/50Cals. With the way the planes handle, dog fighting is pretty hard to pull off, strafe/bomb runs tend to not net much in the ways of kills either. I know some people are pretty damn good with planes (Dave2236 springs to mind), but air superiority really isn't a factor in winning the matches. I do use them, but often its to do a few quick bomb runs and then bail and claim a flag or two.
I'm perfectly happy being a rifleman wreckin peoples days with rifle grenades and accurate long distance shots.
12 matches to 100... 18 hours of gametime.
