View Full Version : Something I'm obsessive about: dying on the first level

of any type game that's split up into stages or levels. If I die on the first level I'll reset the game (or start over if it's in the arcade) unless it's something impractical. Does anyone else do something like this?

I am of the same way.
I don't like to die on the first level. If I die on the first level before making it to the boss, it is automatic reset LOL

If it is a game I am playing for the first times, I'll give my self time to learn but once I master stage 1, I like every game to be a no miss stage 1.

Some games, when I get really good at, I aim for no miss on multiple stages…

I want to see how many times you'd restart on this...

You are not alone. I have this thing with street fighter if I lose I restart. I hate losing a round. Will I ever have the perfect set? I doubt it.

I only do that if the game has a limited number of lives so I don't waste them in the beginning of the game. In a game like Ghouls 'n' Ghosts where there are infinite continues I just let it ride. Or in game like Oddworld where there are no lives. It doesn't bother me to die in the first level unless I'm wasting valuable resources.

Exactly. Those lives are for when you need them to continue through the tougher levels later on. You're going to have to start at the beginning anyway, so why not start with all your lives?

Also, if the game has a save feature, I'll reload if I just was in a battle where I wasted some useful or uncommon item. Like if the fight went terribly and I wasted a lot of resources in it.

i find with alot of older games, if I die once I turn the game off.

I don't ever reset games on account of dying on the first level. Why not?

Because these things have a way of evening themselves out. Numerous times I've died on an easy first level of a game only to get through tougher levels that I usually lose lives on without dying once. So things end up being balanced either way.

Let me give you an example. The last time I played NES Double Dragon, I lost a life on the first level which I don't think I've ever died on before. Got too cute with the conveyor belt and Abobo. However, I managed to finish the rest of the game without losing another life, which is unusual because I almost always lose a man somewhere in Mission 3 or 4 before I manage to finish the game.

I've had the same thing happen with NES Life Force, NES Gradius, NES Double Dragon 2, NES Ninja Turtles, SNES Final Fight, NES Zelda II (died getting that trophy for the Jump spell in the dark), one of the Mario games, etc. Every single time it happens I end up doing much better than I usually do when playing the later levels that usually give me problems.

If anything, dying on Level 1 increases your focus and concentration, which causes you to play better than you normally might. Plus getting pissed off about it helps you get into the zone for the rest of the game.

It never works that way for me. Once I start doing bad it just got downhill from there.

I'm the same way, I always end up hitting the reset button if I lose a life in the first level of a game(mainly older 2D side scrollers). If it's my first time playing a game, I usually just let it slide, kind of like a "live and learn" thing(or would that be die and learn)? lol

I reset if lives are a factor and it can be done without losing a life. Some games make it close when you reach the end of the first level so I'll retry until I get through it all men intact. My son always resets, no matter what. It's funny...I don't think he's ever made it past World 1-2 on Super Mario Bros.

I would intentionally let Glass Joe, Von Kaiser and co. kick the crap out of me so I could see their victory dance. I'd never see it otherwise.

Regardless of what happens, it's not a good sign.

Plenty of titles are tough enough for deaths on level 1 to be regular.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnWot7bX-_c&fmt=18I love how even when you finish the level as little Mario, you still die and have to start over.

I do it. Because if I die on the first stage, that's a clue that something's not right with my video game playing. And I say "let's try this again". It's like "waking up on the wrong side of the bed" or "Getting off on the wrong foot" or whatever similar phrases would apply.

What do you do when a zergling rush is upon you before you’re ready?
1) Say "GG" and promptly exit.
2) ALT+F4
3) Unplug the network connection

Often I play with whatever hand I hold. Death happens so until those lives/continues are at zero I'll keep pressing Start.

I admit the allure of flawless gaming is nice, but I usually just keep losing lives until I master what I'm doing wrong. If at first you don't succeed. Try, try, and then promptly break your controller.

I used to play like that when my sister and I were kids. The games we did this for were TMNT 3 and Super C for the NES. I felt that we should make it to the second level before we started losing lives so I'd reset the game if either of us died on the first level. I don't recall if I did this with any other co-op game, and it's a practice I don't believe I ever continued after the NES.

You do realize that doing this means you won't get to play thru a majority of games with steep dificulty. Ninja Gaiden on Xbox comes to mind.

I'm sure he means games that are played for score that also have an amount of lives, such as Pac Man. I've been recently doing that a lot when I play on my phone.

I usually don't do that. But my wyfe always resets if she gets HIT on the first level of Kid Chameleon. And that's because she's a perfectionist, and not to save any resources. She does on Sonic games too and, to tell you the truth, it even annoys me sometimes.

Yeah, good suggestion. Now THAT can cure an first-stage-death obsession!
