I also have this problem with a few 360's I have. Is it a new drive belt for both ?

The xbox when it goes to eject the laser try drops but the magnet in the spindle does not separate from the stabilizer on the top of the drive. Ive tried other tops for the drive and that does not matter. However if you remove the top the drive opens and closes fine. I have a few that do this and the only way to open them when the machine is closed up is to give the top around the back of the drive a good tap and it will open right up.

Any idea's?

EDIT:It also does not matter if I swap out the tray it still does the same thing.

Mine sort of does this too-- I have to punch it on the top to get the drive open. If anyone has a good solution, I'd like to know as well.

Thirded, I still haven't been able to figure this out!

My workaround- leave a disc in the drive all the time. If there's a disc already inside then it won't stick. I leave one of those clear plastic CD- sized discs that come in CD-R spindles in the drive when the Xbox is not in use.

It's the belt. I see this happen on PC's at work. Cleaning the belt always fixes it. What happens is that enough dust gets on the belt that the motor pulley just slips.

Give the belt and pulley's a good cleaning.
