I don't have experience first-hand with resurfacing, but what I've read is that DC discs are difficult to do right. They are softer plastic, so different buffing discs are needed than for CDs and PS discs.

Could they have broken the disc by resurfacing it?
yes, depending on how long of a cycle was run on the disc..
resurfacing any disc based game beyond a certain point can cause irreparable damage to the game data itself.. thus making it unplayable..
unfortunatly, even though many people operating these machines are inept.. resurfacing a game is usually performed "at your own risk", so stores cannot be held accountable for any damages..

Depending on your luck, around $10-15 is about right for DC Sonic Adventure, give or take. I was thinking of acquiring a sealed copy not too long ago and checked prices on a few venues.

I had a few bad experiencies resurfacing DC discs, apparently the inner section of the GD ROM is very sensitive and is very common to kill a disc when you do that.

So the point of all this is that your scratched up Dreamcast games might as well go in the trash or be sold to some boob dumb enough to buy them, since they can't be repaired any other way.

It's fine as long as you resurface the correct side and don't burn it.

DC games are very tricky to buff. If it works, you are better off not risking it. DC games had several problems, soft plastic, the reflective material was defective, bad labels, etc.
The rule of thumb on DC games, buff it until it plays, then stop. Never buff it just to make it look new because you can end up with a ruined disc.
Can this be done with music CDs and film DVDs too?

Ask at your local video rental place if they do disc resurfacing. The pros are better.
