My recent thread on Virtua Fighter got me thinking about this SNES fighter.

I remember that I wanted to buy a 32X for Virtua Fighter, but then I heard that the SNES was getting it's own 3D polygon fighter. "Well then", I thought, "I'll just get this SNES fighter and wait to buy a Saturn and get the real deal copy of Virtua Fighter".

But as we know, FX Fighter was cancelled on the SNES. How far along did it get before it was canned? Is there a rom version to try out? I've attached an image from snescentral.com (http://www.snescentral.com/cart.php?id=0125&num=0) which seems to show that a playable version did exist. I understand that this game eventually made it's way to the PC. I'm not really interested in the PC version, I'm interested in the SNES version.

Any more information is appreciated :)

I seem to recall Carnivol showing me a video of the game in action. Probably on youtube if you search.

The German blip says: This is the first polygon fighter for any 16 bit system.
Obviously they never heard of 4D Boxing (Mindscape Atari ST, Amiga)

interesting... according to wikipedia, there was a sequel to it on the PC too:

FX Fighter Turbo is a sequel that was released for the PC in 1996 with new characters, moves, environments, costumes, special effects, network play, and support for Microsoft Windows and the S3 Graphics chipset. As did many other fighting games at the time, FX Fighter Turbo followed suit with the legendary Mortal Kombat by including fatalities, a feature not seen in the previous game.

FX Fighter with fatalities, huh? sounds pretty cool to me... like to see 'em both on the SNES... maybe I'll track 'em down for the PC, just to have 'em

I have often wondered about this game myself. I saw a video of this game running at a TRU along with Comanche.

My understanding is that both of the games were cancelled for a combination of two reasons:

1. They were to be late, late releases on a fading console. The addition of the FX2 chip would make them more expensive to produce as well.

2. Both looked terrible. The video I saw of FX Fighter was incredibly choppy and the fighters were VERY low on detail. I was surprised they even advertised it in that state. Comanche looked even worse... a bunch of blurred pixels in a small window.

2. Both looked terrible.

I have to differ in that opinion.

I used to play Comanche back in 1995 using a $2,000 computer (486DX, etc) and the game looked very very close to that SNES version. Not too bad for a 99 US console...
