View Full Version : ... the Sega Saturn can play .avi?

I'm probably not the first to notice this, but recently I put my copy of Virtua Fighter 2 in my computer to rip it to play on an emulator, and I noticed three files on it that were .avi:

VFEND.AVI
VF2OP1.AVI
VF2OP2.AVI

According to VLC, for VFEND.AVI the video codec is DUCK, the audio codec is ms. No information is shown for the others, but they're still playable.

It's kind of strange, and I'm wondering if anyone here might have any further information on it, or point me in the direction where I can get more information on this.

Are you sure the files can be accessed in-game and aren't intended to just be viewed on a PC? It wasn't terribly uncommon to have some bonus stuff on console titles that is viewable on a PC.

AVI is just a container that's used for video files, the only thing that really matters is what audio and video codecs are used for the encoding/decoding of the data. More information than I'm sure you'd ever want about the Duck TM codec is available on this site (http://www.wiki.multimedia.cx/index.php?title=Duck_TrueMotion_1).

NiGHTS: Into Dreams and the Saturn port of Castlevania SOTN definitely have omake.

And as for the DUCK codec... If I burned a CD with video encoded in DUCK, could it play on a Saturn? I'm wondering, since I don't have a Saturn to test this out with.

As long as the bitrate wasn't too high (taking into account drive speed and processing power), you had a chip that allowed homebrew code and wrote a video player, then sure!

Seems like an awful lot of work, though. Especially when there's a hardware-based MPEG1 decoder card available that'd allow you to play videos a lot easier (just burn off as a VCD). Even then, still too much time/effort/money IMO.

Yup, Pocket Fighter on the Saturn has a nifty Windows screensaver. But you probably already knew that! ;)
