After selling my VCS collection way back in 2004 (could have been 2003, memory's fading fast), I am now re-starting on a VCS collection, boxed games only.
Of course, second time around it is more difficult, I guess I will not find a boxed Boing! for $2 ever again, or a white box Hangman, but that's life. I am just happy what I can collect now, at least I found a boxed Stellar Track, which I never had boxed before, that makes up for another loss from before.

40 games so far, feel free to check it out :-)

Very nice. I made the mistake of selling my 2600 collection twice. It was the only collection I ever sold.

First time was back in 1987-88, I sold over 450 games and several systems so I could get some NES games. I think I got $150 for everything. I remember I bought Zelda, Rad Racer, Trojan and one other. I was pretty bummed after I realized what I did. Second time was around 1997. I had gotten about 350-400 games and some how sold them again. I got back into Atari again when I bought about 50 boxed games for $2-3 each. Now I have about 200-300 (about 75 boxed) and want to add about 50 oor so more. I will NOT be selling these.

Someone on these boards are selling a bunch of boxed 2600 games. I think they had about 40 of them.

Thanks.
Wow, selling twice, that does hurt indeed.
And no, I won't sell mine again this time around (the hunt is kinda fun too).

why do so many collectors have such rigid rules?

boxed only? so that means if you came across a cart-only copy of quadrun for 2 dollars you would pass it up?

of course boxes are nice but why limit yourself?

I think there are exceptions to that rule, I mean Klax on 7800 without box (it's a weird plastic box anyway), no problems, Quadrun without box, well, that game wasn't even released in Europe, so that is a exception too. 32 in 1 had a very limited release with a box, so I'll take it without. But for example Strawberry Shortcake, I own the game, but I want a box for it, also Frogger 2, I have the cart, but I'm still hunting a boxed version.

Boxes do seem to be a challenge here. It's a good way to collect casually though. It also exposes you to games you might not have looked at otherwise as well; since your only browsing for boxed games.

Good luck. I'm not so brave as to go for 2600 boxes, though I did manage to get most of my 7800 collection boxed (no Klax though).

I collect Nes games but in my travels see things and I pick up stuff. So last year I started seeing 2600 games cheap so I would cherry pick from the .50 backets. I got Kool-Aid Man and Frankinsteins Monster (both loose)for a buck. Now I have over 50. Just the ones I like. Still need HERO. Love it! But I had been getting games without the system and just last week I found a 2600 complete.....9 bucks! That night I called my friend and we had an Official Atari Championship. And Yes I am now the New 2009 Atari World Champion. I meen 1700 on Frogger! Lol! I do have one sealed Atari game.....Space Attack by M Network. I also have a sealed Intellivision game Utopia. Both boxes are in realy good condition.PM me.

Because most people don't have infinite space or money so they choose to buy things under certain conditions(this can include condition, price, rarity, or a combination). There can always be exceptions to the rule, it's not 100% rigid.

I buy games in person, so it's only what I can come across. I used to buy whatever I came across at a good price, but I ended up with too much stuff taking space, so now I'm more selective when I buy things. I usually avoid buying games for systems I don't collect for, unless I know the game is really rare or valuable. Some systems I rarely would consider buying loose games for, including the Genesis.

Ha! I read that as VHS. I was wondering why you were going to collect videotapes. And I wondered why such a thread appeared in Classic Gaming.

Give me a break here. I have a horrible headcold.

I don't go out of my way to collect boxed games but will pick them up if I come across them cheap. I only have about 40 boxed games, mostly 2600, with a couple 7800, one boxed XE (Lode Runner) and 3 NES. They're nice to have but I wouldn't want too many due to space issues. Hundreds of carts take up enough space as it is. That volume with boxes would mean moving to another house.

yes, all PAL unless noted...
A boxed Reactor is mostly quite easy to find on European ebay, if you got that game on NTSC, just hunt for a boxed game on UK ebay:

People keep asking, 'what's a white box Hangman'? I'm not into box variations, but I was told that this is a very rare boxed version of Atari's Hangman I used to own, from mid 80s, I believe. The normal common box version is blue, a bit like the Brain Games box.

Hangman's the game in the middle

Thanks Tom, but I already got a boxed Reactor. I just don't hear anyone talk about that game anymore, and I am a huge fan. So seeing it in your collection got me really excited.

Question, are the other parker bros games (Q-bert, Popeye), difficult to find in the UK boxed?
