New board, new members, let's revive some classics!

I was thinking of making this a poll again, but it seems like there could never be enough options to fit everyone's collecting style in. So, let me just pose this as a question; What do you collect mainly and why?

I'll get the ball rolling by saying that my main area of interest is pre-crash stuff. The reason being that the styles of games from that time appeal to me the most. I also would be lying if I didn't say I have a lot of nostalgia about that time in my life (79-84 or so) and the older games take me back in a way. Plus I know enough about how videogames work to really get a kick out of seeing what people could or couldn't do with the limited technology of the day.

I also enjoy some newer stuff, but I'm not as active about getting it. I love shmups and Contra style action games and try to get all of that I can, but other than that I'm more interested in finding stuff cheap. Though I lean more towards the older stuff, I can't pass up a bargan if the game is good.

I mostly play games rather then collecting, but for me collecting is part of gaming- collecting decent games to play later. I still have my Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Sega CDX, a PSX and N64.

The PSX and N64 is what I play mainly now but thanks to emulation I have gone back to play many other s/nes games I missed because they never came out over to America, or games I had once and sold off or rented. I'm considering going into collecting of one or another once I find a new job, perhaps either some NES stuff or Atari related. Right now if I find a game I like for any system, I get it eventually- mainly for the PSX or N64 (like getting Tempest X3 for $5 and Bad Fur Day for $8 at my local EBX).

One day I'll post my game lists.

Hmm... Well, I personally try and collect NES and SNES. Mostly because this is the era I started in and the had some of the best games hands down. Although I must admit it's not going to well, I only have about 200 NES games and 100 SNES games :-(

I'm currently trying to finish my Intellivision (70 games), Jaguar (26 games) and Lynx (22 games) collections.

Besides that, I also collect for the 2600/5200/7800 and SMS, with an occasionally NES/SNES/Genesis cartridge being picked up.

My main area of interest are the games of the 16 bit area...snes/genny/pc engine. Planning on delving into the Neo world soon as i get out of college and have some spare money :)

I never turn down a good find, as I am sure most of you do the same. I collect most anything I can get my hands on. If I find it at a decent price, I usually go for it. With that being said, the two main interest I have are Atari 2600 and NES. I grew up with the NES and Atari is very appealing. I do have other systems, but they do not get too much attention.
My roommate is more into newer systems (such as PS2, XBOX ect.) I've played them and do sometimes like them. However, I do not find them as exciting or interesting as the older systems. I wouldn't mind drumming up some more dreamcast items though.

In my case, anything goes. My room is like that fictional chocolate factory, nothing ever comes out.

If it's fun, it's hooked up to the TV. So I collect mainly for playing.

I collect almost everything that's a cartridge - with the major exceptions of N64 and Colecovision. Stuff like SNES and Genesis are more just games I'll play or at least have some kind of story to them. NES has turned this way too, as I mainly stick to unlicensed stuff and the playable games. The systems that I'm most active with are 2600, Intellivision, SMS, and Arcadia (gotta have something obscure.)

Lately, I've been getting into the old handheld and tabletop games too. As I've said, VFD is good shtuff.

Has to be the C64 of course :D

With nearly 300 carts and over 1,500 titles in general, I think I've done pretty well over the 18 years.

Recently I've got a Vectrex (with multicart, though I'll be looking for some of the new stuff at CGE) and 7800 (just really the HES PAL stuff let to get) to bide me over and have something new to focus on. Next maybe go back to the NGPC as I have a system and some games already...

Just to make it official - or for those who don't know me - I collect everything for every system. I wish I had limits, it would make things much more cost-effective! Actually I used to also collect comic books and baseball cards. Those got cut out of the equation about ten years ago when I started the Digital Press project and decided to focus on my first love :)

I collect everything except non cart based handhelds. I even like collecting boxed disk computer games! Just about everything I have I found locally. I don't generally buy online or from ebay unless it is something I really want. Right now most of my dollars are going to used PSX games and I am working to get all the big boxed ones.

I generally collect for anything I can get a good deal on. When I can find it I pick up anything I don't have NES or earlier. Genny and SNES I'm real picky about. It pretty much either has to be really cheap or somthing I particularly want to play. I still hate the playstation, I didn't get one untill I found a system for $10 and so far I've only gotten a few pinball games and classic compilations or remakes for it. I'm currently focusing on trying to complete my U.S dreamcast collection (up to 160 games now) after that I'll get around to picking up the last 8 or 10 games I need to finish my 5200 collection :D

I collect for every system I own - 2600, 7800, NES, SNES, GB, GBA, SMS, Genesis, Saturn, DC, TG16, PSX and PS2. I also collect different series of games... right now I'm working on trying to get every version of Castlevania, Gradius, Strider, Splatterhouse, G'NG and Kujaku-oh that I can find.

I collect only stuff I wanna play (the list is long enough as it is!) for the Atari 2600, the NES, the SNES, the Gameboy/Gameboy Color/Gameboy Advance (I have a GBC and a GBA), the GameCube, the Sega Master System, the Genesis. the Game Gear and the PSX. Computer-wise, I'm into Mac games, from System 7 to OS 9 (I have a IIcx and an iMac).

All I'm missing is a Colecovision and a PS2 (that's for when I have a steady income again), and I'll be a happy camper.

Now to make place for all that in our 1-bedroom apartment: that's the challenge.

Right now I'm interested in collecting all systems then building a good selection of games for each one. Right now I have 13 systems hooked up to one TV. I'm using 2 (PS2 style) 5 input s-video switchers and about 4 stacked RF units. If I had unlimited time and money I would buy everything.

I collect for any and all systems, and anything video game related. I stick to the thrifts and fleas looking for the cheap find. Occasionally I'll splurge at a game shop or eBay if it's something I really want.

The systems I have the most stuff for right now are the 2600, NES, Genesis and Dreamcast. I don't have a complete library for any system yet but intend to one day. I figure if I get within 10 games to complete a library I'll zero in and finish it off or try anyway.

Right now I've got about 40 different systems and aroung 2500 games. My collection lacks focus for sure!

Lately I play more than collect. I've widdled down my collection to my NES, Saturn, Jaguar, Color Computer, PSX and Dreamcast. Like others I can't pass up a good deal, so if it's a game (or system) I don't have and the price is right, it's mine.

But right now there are 3 systems I always look for: NES, DC, and Sega Genesis.

I have 90% of NES games, 50% of DC games, and 60% of Genesis games. THe Genesis games are getting harder to find complete.

I mainly just collect for the NES because that was my first system. Right now I only have 130 different titles, but it's still growing.

If I see a good deal, I'll pick up SNES, N64, or PSX games. I dont even associate the word "collecting" with the newer systems. That freakin $50 price tag is killing me.

I'm another of the "player" kind. (i.e. I only collect what I will play)

I guess you could say I collect Saturn imports, because I've never gotten rid of one, and I never will (not even my crappy, disc-only X-Men: Children of the Atom.)

I own the following systems: NES, SNES, GBA, N64, Gamecube, Genesis, Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast, Game Gear, PSX, PS2, and Wonderswan Color.

I hope to someday own: Neo-Geo (can't decide AES or MVS), TurboGrafx 16, TurboGrafx CD, and Sega Master System (mine just broke.....)

I posted on this once before, but it must have been deleted in the "Great Crash of 2002." As it says below, I collect NES, SNES, Gameboy, and a little bit of the N64. I guess one could say I'm a Nintendork (however, contrary to what others on this board say, we CAN spell). I've only been seriously "collecting" for about a year now--before that, I had always just had a "bunch of games," and only fell into collecting as I realized I had more games than anybody I knew. So, I figured why not try to get as many as I can?!

In that year's time of being a "collector" I've managed to amass a good start to a solid NES collection, and a decent sized amount of other Nintendo systems as well. I found an old 2600 this weekend, so I just might have to start a collection of those  , but no plans as of late. So far this is what I have, I know its paltry compared to some on this board, but like I said, I've only been doing this for a year)...

235 different NES titles
36 SNES
24 N64
52 Gameboy (GB, color, GBA etc)

Oh, and now I can add 13 Atari 2600 games too!

i buy what i play. the "problem" is, that list grows exponentially every few months, lol, and i play too many rpgs, lol! i sold off/traded/gave away most of my pre-crash stuff (2600/7800/odyssey/starcade), but i kept my colecovision & vectrex for some wistful nostalgia. used to collect game+watch handhelds/coleco tabletops, but a load were stolen a while back, and i've never replaced them (now i just have no room for the smaller stuff- go figure)...

i'm heavily into imports for the ps/saturn/3DO/turbo grafx/mega drive/super famicom/ etc. but i have about 30 other system here not collecting dust for extended periods of time. just picked up a fm towns marty, so, i'll be tracking down stuff for that soon (shooters/arcade games/whatever's interesting)... :D

I collect everything as well, from Pong systems up to Dreamcast and beyond. I've got:

(7) N64, (80) NES, (39) Intellivsion, (21) Master System, (106) Atari 2600, (66) Genesis, (17) TI-99, (37) Dreamcast, (2) 5200, (2) Atari XE, (16) Colecovision, (3) Leisure Vision (Arcadia 2001), (3) O2, (6) TG16, (2) CoCo3, (5) SNES, (1) Jaguar, (6) Lynx, (1) 32x, (12) Sega CD, (25) Playstation, and (8) GameBoy/Color/Advance games.

If you look closely at the numbers, it mostly what I can pick up on the cheap that own the most of. Add in the systems (30+) including pongs, and the beast is growing. Over 450 games. Considering I had just over 100 last year around this time... wow :)

For me anyways.

1. Working Designs games (only 1 on playstation left, but a few to go on other consoles)
2. Sega CD (Plenty To Go)
3. Long Box Playstation games (I think I have about... 25?)
4. Playstation games in general (Not really trying for a full set, but I own about 200)
5. Any game I owned as a kid that I sold :( (only about 10-20 of those left)

Definately 8-bit stuff. I don't know why it appeals to me, but it is what I collect. Pirate Famicom, NES, SMS, Gamegear, Gameboy/Color...

BTW: If anyone has a Master Gear or Gear Master or two laying around in their trade pile, I would madly appreciate getting a hold of it. I am egtting my Street Fighter II' in the mail from Brazil next week and my SMS I isn't compatible.

I mainly collect games that I want to play.

My N64 collection just reached 35 games, I there's probably only two or three 'must have' games I want to get.

Until recently, I had a lot of focus on the SNES, but - as with the N64, there's not a whole lot I desperately want. Probably about 10 or so titles I really want.

Dreamcast tends to get the most attention at the moment - and I have a LONG way to go if I want to get all the games I'm looking for. Fortunately, good games are always popping up and DC games are the fastest growing percentage of my collection.

Saturn, whilst I try to focus on it, just isn't as common to pick up games for - and as such, can be neglected at times.

I've recently also gone on a PSX game collecting spree, and I'm trying to pick up all the games I liked in that era, yet missed out on due to my N64 fetish in the late 90's.

Occasionally I'll pick up a NES game, if it's cheap and is good - but NES doesn't interest me in a huge way, as it was an era I never got into.

Not frequently, but consistently, I will buy games for the current consoles (GCN, Xbox, PS2). It's just not frequent due to the prices of new games being quite expensive.

All my other consoles (Lynx, GBC, Game Gear, GBA, 2600, Mega Drive, Mega CD and Master System) I just don't really buy games for. I mean, I look for games (especially Mega CD) but they either don't interest me (Lynx, Mega Drive), are too expensive (Game Gear, GBA), or just impossible to find (Mega CD).

So yeah - essentially I'm a Dreamcast collector, with a bit of N64, SNES and Saturn on the side. :D

I mainly collect for the NES (I have about 300+ unique games). I try to get SMS games, but there are very few around here... :(

But of cource I buy any games that I come across if it is a good deal! I have about 100+ games for various consoles that I do NOT HAVE! (Saturn, Sega CD, 32X Virtual Boy, Intellivision...)

ARCZero

I'm pretty sure I posted in a similar thread before..

These days I'm mostly a PC gamer (FPS & strategy games) and classic arcade game nut. However, the GameCube has had some great time-suck titles such as Metroid Prime and Animal Crossing. IMO the GameCube is the best console since the NES.

I collect because 1. I've always been collecting something (started with Star Wars figures), 2. I'm a gamer, and 3. nostalgia. I only focus on systems that have some memory for me, such as:
1. The Atari 5200 - sure, my family had a 2600, but I really got into console games when we bought one of these babies. I have 16 games to go until completing this collection.
2. Vectrex - I always wanted one of these systems but could never con err convince my paremts to get one. I'm less than 10 titles away from completing this collection.
3. Nintendo NES - this is my prime collection. I received the ROB set and about 8 games for xmas when it came out. This was my system, not the family's. I spent a crapload of time with it, including 24 hours straight with Zelda. Years later I worked for a video store with hundreds of NES games that I had to stock. I greedily eyeballed each one. Then I went off to college and sold my home collection for spending money. Now I'm 75 games away from completing the US collection, although I may never complete it due to the cost prohibitiveness of around 5 games.
4. Virtual Boy - this is just a cool system - I love VR type stuff. 5 games away from completing this one.

And then I pick up just about anything decently priced in my adventures for finishing my four video game collections. Sometimes I clear out the extra stuff I find, other times I start new collections. I've got so much extra stuff I need to start trading or eBaying soon.

My first post!

I'm more of a player than a collector (no, really :) I'm the guy that had 3 E.T. carts in possession and busted them all open to build a few homebrews for personal use for the 2600 and didn't leave a single one for the "collection").

I'm mainly focused on the Atari 2600 (150 carts), Colecovision (30 carts) and Sega Saturn (100 games - mostly imports as I don't care for much of what was released in the US). I'm more of a collector by genere - with shmups being first and foremost and platform games being also pretty popular (so I don't have too many SNES, NES, Genesis, PC Engine, etc. games but what I do have is pretty much a 2D shooter or a 2D platform game with the occasional good puzzle game or 2D fighter).

Good call on not resurrecting the poll part of my idea, Cap'n, and I think this way it's much more interesting. It was neat to watch the numbers tally up, but I don't think it would be terribly easy to set up a poll that let people discuss what they collected (barring the ability to do a multi-choice, which wouldn't work in the normal forum system anyway...hmm, interesting idea...)

For myself, I collect titles for the MSX2 (perhaps some MSX stuff as well), Famicom, Super Famicom, Japanese Mega Drive, Sharp x68000, Neo Geo, a few N64 titles, GameBoy, and hopefully some Japanese PS2 stuff soon.

Series-wise, I try to pick up any Makaimura, Metroid, Shinobi, Akumajo Dracula and Contra stuff I can find. I have picked up every copy of Akumajo Dracula x68000 I have seen for sale, though to be fair there may be more where I got the last one from (don't tell me it's so, because then I'll have to buy a third).

I recently acquired installments 4, 5, 6, and 4 "Easytype" from the Japanese releases of the Final Fantasy series. They're not in the best shape ever, but for now this has quenched my thirst to pick those up for whatever reason caused me to want them (I don't play Final Fantasy games.)

I do try to collect all prototype/store display hardware I can find, as well as other odd (and aesthetically pleasing) variants of hardware such as the approximately 1.2 million variants of Sega hardware known to man for systems like the Mega Drive (I disregard NES/Famicom hardware because it's ugly).

So far my dilligent attempts to uncover a copy of the elusive C64 title "The Last Ninja" or any of its offspring have proven fruitless, so I continue to be without a last ninja in my collection.

Redux.

Wow. Last time I posted in this topic I didn't even know what Beatmania was.

Well, I liquidated my collection in an attempt to kill the collecting bug but...it didn't work. The little bastard never dies. ^_^

I have recently begun collecting Konami's Bemani series, and PS2 games (in that order, pretty much)

In my house we have several game systems and they're all hooked up to a TV and get played.

Sega DC: It's my daughters. I don't really collect for it but I do look for good games for her all the time. Half of her expanding libray is from my contributions.

PSOne: This is my son's system, I mildly collect for this one and I try to buy him collectible games that he'll enjoy playing.

PS2: My system. I consider this a collectible and I'm trying to build up a good library of games and PS2 add-ons.

Super Famicom and Super NES: My system. Right now my main collectible.

Sega Nomad. My system. This is my secondary collectible. I really need to pick up a Genesis console with the Sega CD and 32x so I can give my Nomad a rest.

Sega Game Gear. My system. I just want the TV add-on but I do try to pick up good games for it when the price is right.

Virtual Boy. My system. I don't collect for this. If I found games in the wild I'd buy them but the VB is such a pain in the neck to play. It sits on my desk at work.

Game Cube: Family System. I just try to buy games for that the whole family can enjoy.

I plan on adding the following systems sooner or later
3DO
Jaguar with CD add-on.
NEC Consoles
Sega Saturn
NEO GEO

I mostly collect what would be considered "neo-classic," namely NES, SNES, Genesis, NGPC, Saturn, GB/C, and if they're considered neo-classic yet, PS-X and DC. I wish I could afford Neo Geo AES stuff, but alas, I'm about as broke as I was before I found DP.

I mainly collect for the Atari 2600. I hope to have a 'complete' first party NTSC collection somewhat soon with game and manual, as well as the three PAL exclusives. And then continue to chip away at the third party titles...

I'm dabbling with the 5200, Saturn, and Turbografx 16 as well, but am leaning towards getting only games that are fun...

I have the following systems VCS, A52, A78, LYX, JAG, JCD, C64, AMI, NES, SNE, N64, GBC, GBA, GC, TEX, DUO, GEN, SCD, 32X, SAT, DC, 3DO, PS2 and am just shy of 1000 games...

Cheers,
Ben

Right now I collect basically only the top games for the systems that I own. I do have certain categories that I will buy any game for even if I wouldnt buy it on the merit of the gameplay.

For example...

1.) Treasure Games....any and all...recently trying to get into the games that the team developed before they became treasure.

2.) Metal Gear Series (any part of the series from either the US or Japan. I collect all versions of the same game from both countries, along with any MG toys I can find)

3.) Along with the metal gear series, any hideo kojima related games...again all versions...

4.) Bungie Developed Games....you all know them from Halo but I was a huge Myth Series fanatic at one time in my life. I collect anything from the Marathon, Myth, and Halo Series including toys. (Damn anyone have a Bandai Pippin Super Marathon cartridge they want to donate to me????)

5.) Metroid Series....again like the Metal Gear...pretty much the same...interested in toys too but I only know of the Samus figure

6.) Zelda Series...same as Metroid/Metal gear minus the toys...but might get into those later when I own my own place and a gameroom to put them in

Thats basically it for the 'I will collect anything related to it' categories. However, I do own a PS2, Xbox (only own Halo though), Dreamcast, Sega CDX, Super Famicom, Famicom, and hope to get a Famicom Disk System while I am in Japan.

Right now I am in Japan and only have my Famicom and Super Famicom. I plan on focusing on the best 30 or so Japanese games for those while I am in Japan. After that I would love to get into Megadrive, Turbo Duo, and Saturn.

Again aside for the above categories, I just like to collect and play the games. In the case of the Famicom or Super Famicom unless it falls into the above games I dont even need it with a box or manual as long as the cartridge is in mint condition.

...sorry for the long post...cheers

I collect all things electronic gaming related like many here. My main focus however is classic handheld/tabletop games. I have had terrible luck finding these things locally at flea markets, pawn shops, and thrift stores so I have been forced to get all my handhelds on ebay. I plan to try out Philly Classic 5 and also a big HAM radio/computer flea market that supposedly has some good old stuff.

It will take me a long time to get all the classic handhelds I want, but that's half the fun of collecting. Actually acquiring all that cool stuff. The other half is playing and repairing these systems as well as bragging to my friends :) .

The only systems I have are atari 2600, nes, snes, genesis, ps1, game boy, and master system. The main system I am going for right now is the nes, but I still collect for the rest. If I see some good deals on games for a system I dont have, Ill get the games and hope to find the system soon after. By the way, I dont collect for ps1...blah

I collect for al systems from NES and up, but a few weeks i decided to focus on the Dreamcast (but if i find anything cheap for any other console i buy it to  ). It's a relative cheap system, it has an small library (216), it has lots of good games that still look and play good today, and all it's games are relative easy to find (i do PAL only). I still can buy loads-o-games here in town and eBay is full of DC games.

I collect games for all console i own, but i mostly am interested in Neoi-Geo games, and collecting the fighters for that system.

as far as for the SEGA CD, JAG, 3DO, and PS1 big boxes, if I see em and I don't own em, they get bought.
Every thing else I just kinda grab what looks cool.

**PICTURES AVAILABLE** will post on ebay once i have a reply

NOT A DICK SMITH WIZZARD!! OR ANY OTHER VARIATION! Has two joypads which combine to a QWERTY keyboard! comes with single classic game "Space Invaders"

Great for one who has no starting base for Creatiivision and is looking at getting into it! Great because it only has a small game collection, all of which are very rare to come across.

Will sell for cheap, as i have no interest in the collection of older gaming systems. NOMINATE a price!!!! I live in Australia, and will send to anywhere, so long as you pay for the P&H.

Very good condition, however the boxes have been misplaced. woodgrain sides, classic machine. I've spent many many hours on this one.

TECH SPECS!

Seen this thread a few times, surprised that ive not posted in here yet.

I've got a decent number of systems, and a fair share of games for all of them. But I really collect only a few... My older systems, though loved are not really played much, and i'd rather buy for something that i've got a decenly high chance of playing.

PSOne (hands down winner)
PS2
GCN
XBox
DC
GBA (kinda, I'll buy for it, but much more infrequently than my other main purchased systems)
And ive been known to buy N64 when its something good and complete.

NES mostly, cause I'm a 20-something year old who grew up with the best of the best, and I'm still playing with power! Also Atari 2600, 5200, a little SNES and C64. But sucky crap, up here in Alaska, the pickings are pretty slim indeed. But I try to get by. I did, on a happier note, just finish my MAME cabinet. I urge any of you who have some extra bucks and extra time to check out www.arcadecontrols.com. But now that I'm done with that, I switch back to NES mode!

Neo Geo AES, PS1, PS2, Xbox, GC, GBA, NGPC, Genesis, Saturn, SNES, Dreamcast and PC Engine.

I only buy games I want to play, unless it's something like Freak Out used for like $7 at EBGames. I really only play vertical shooters, 2d-fighters and RPG's. I mostly collect for the Saturn, PS1, AES, PS2 and Dreamcast.

I don't collect consoles. All of my consoles, except for my AES, are in gamers condition, and I don't have the money to buy various Dreamcast variations or funny looking PC Engines.

It's been a while since I've bought a full-priced PAL release. Feels good 8-) PAL games are meant to be bought from the bargain bin. All my money goes to American discussion board members, and Hong Kong and Japenese eBay sellers.
