View Full Version : One client - 5 cabs- theme 'Hardcore' - your choice...
Ok so imagine you have a client who has asked you to deck out a small room with a maximum of five arcade cabs.
His only specification is his arcade theme of 'Hardcore'.
What would your choice of 5 cabs be?
The defenition of 'Hardcore' is left to you, but should lie on the grounds of a hardcore game to play, to master, or it's fanbase.
My choice would be:
Tetris Grandmaster 3
SSF2T
Ketsui
DDR
Donkey Kong
ps realised this should be in arcade section - please move asrequired.

I'm going to guess that anyone who would actually request "hardcore" cabs isn't going to consider DDR or Donkey Kong as being... hard enough. I would think Metal Slug is probably more along the lines of what they are thinking, just lots of action, blood, mayhem, whatever.

I wouls say a 3 slot snk cab is a must. also something with a jamma 2 board set would be ace (like the sf2 mentioned).
and I, Robot...

Donkey Kong - One of the earliest platformers to come around donkey kong has come to epitomize competitive arcade gaming thanks in no small part to the documentary king of kong. if your client isn't sold on donkey kong because he thinks there's nothing hardcore about jumping over some barrels get him to watch that movie and i bet he'll be sold.
Street Fighter II' - Champion Edition - street fighter 2's longevity is proof enough that this is the true fighting game of the hardcore fighting game fan were looking at 15 years of ass kicking arcade action this game defines the genre
Tempest - To quote Joe Santulli's tempest 2000 review "there's no "beating" it. It just gets harder and harder until it beats you." This is a game that you will never stop playing always trying to beat out your high score.
ikaruga - This is probably the most hardcore shoot em up out there. The only thing that can match the artistic style of this game is its sheer brutality. The difficulty continues to ramp up stage after stage giving you a great hard to learn impossible to master kind of scenario.
House of the Dead 2 - Single greatest light gun game to grace the arcades imho. non stop zombie blasting action it combines the two things that EVERYONE loves. Light gun arcade games, and zombies mix the two and you have one hell of a fun mix.

First three are either or dependent on taste...
Robotron 2084 or Virtual On - Twin Sticks are hardcore. :)
Star Wars Arcade (Atari) - Hardcore nerds require cockpit version or Daytona USA - Hardcore Immersion
Defender/Stargate or Crazy Climber - Hardcore controls
MVS 4 slot - KoF 98, Samurai Shodown and two options to fill.
Favored version of Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter or Soul Calibur/Blade.
You could also swap out the MVS or other fighter cab for a shmup cab of their preference or a personal favorite cab from any genre.
I tried not to pin it down to specifics, more to the point of the suggestions being indicative of the types of games or the 5 cab general theme. Opinions very and you have to make considerations for folks that despise specific games and genres.
House of the Dead 1/2 and Gunblade NYC would have to be in the running if I was setting up a 5 cab room. I'd have a hard time keeping it down to five though, since we are speaking hypothetically.

How small is 'small'?
Street Fighter Zero 3 - CPS2. Preferably on a Sega Super Megalo 2 or other such 50" beast. Otherwise we'll go for an Astro City or Versus City.
Super Neo 29 Candy with a 4-slot NeoGeo MoBo - Garou: MotW, Blazing Star and your favourite King of Fighters and Metal Slug.
Armed Police Batrider, ESP Galuda, Ketsui, DoDonPachi etc. on a Tate'd tri-sync Nanao sit-down Naomi New Net City. Beautiful cab, awesome games.
Shooting cabinet of some description. Maybe something from the House of the Dead or Time Crisis series?
And a driving cabinet. If you have the room, I'd go for a Sega Deluxe 2 player cabinet for Sega Rally 2, Scud Race or Daytona. If not, the gorgeous red stand-up Naomi Outrun 2 is a sight to behold.
We've hit five already? Bugger. Oh well.
Virtual ON: Oratario Tangram - Preferably the DX sit-down (driving cab) version. Otherwise a pair of custom linked Naomis.
L.A. MachineGuns / Gunblade NY - I absolutely love these games.
And finally....
2 Taito Vewlix. 2 Taito Type X2 systems. 2 copies of Street Fighter IV. Bring it.

It's not hardcore if you don't have one of the old Sega hologram games

I'm thinking along the same lines as Frankie. For "hardcore" game themes:
Silent Scope $x
Metal Slug $x
House of the Dead $x
Metal Slug $x
Mortal Kombat $x
Alternate: Ghost Squad
(Change the variables to suit your needs.)
If you want to go hardcore collector, then, yeah:
Environmental Discs of Tron
Sit down Star Wars
Computer Space
Red Donkey Kong
Pong
Or, you could go with the "hard"core theme:
HARD Drivin'
Die HARD
Gun HARD
Drift Out '94 - The HARD Order
HARD Dunk

If it's a co-worker that doesn't care about collectible cabs then I'd do:
1 - 48 in 1
1 - Neo-Geo 1 slot with a 100-in-1 cart
1 - Golden Tee Golf
1 - Big Buck Hunter (or some type of gun/hunting game)
1 - IGT Slot Machine
That should satisfy most family members nicely. ;)
