I mostly play games that involve shooting and have practically zero experience with fighting games. It just doesn’t seem right that a whole genre of games would be missing from my shelves. So I’m asking for some help and suggestions towards finding some fighting games that might appeal to a person who enjoys shooting. It really doesn’t matter to me if it’s good or bad, or what console it’s on, or whether it’s old or new, or whether it’s imported or domestic. It doesn’t matter if it’s 2D, 3D, or Vs. A brawler or beat-em up will work for me too. What matters most is finding fighting games that provide for or better yet, emphasize using projectiles of some sort during play. Even if they aren’t particularly effective!
I’m completely open to any type of projectiles - magic, fireballs, throwing objects, beams, bombs or explosives, whatever. It just needs to be some sort of ranged attack that most if not all of the characters are capable of dispensing towards opponents.
Normally, I would do the research myself before asking for help, but there are so many fighting games to plow through and I really don’t understand fighting game terminology well enough to understand what exactly it is I’m looking for. So I thought I’d make it easier on myself and ask for help from some people who really enjoy fighting games and might be able to help me find the specific type of fighting games I’m interested in. Will appreciate your help!

Any street fighter game
Any mortal kombat game
In the street's of rage series you could use objects like pipes and bottles.
There are quite a lot of other titles that are similar ( Double dragon series , golden axe series ,Dungeons and dragons beat em ups ect)

The Gundam fighters like the Gundam Battle Assault series (PS1/2) are perfect for your criteria. Also see Cyberbots, Capcom fighter Saturn JPN Import and Tech Romancer for Dreamcast.

On the beat 'em up end The Punisher on Genesis is the way to go.

I always enjoyed the X-Men 2d fighters...Marvel vs Capcom, in particular. You'd love playing as Cable (he has a cheap attack that you can beat the whole game with involving him shooting a handgun at his opponent). Great play control, great graphics, with alot of useless unlockables.

Power Stone and Power Stone 2 would be right up your alley... you can find them on the Dreamcast, or on a PSP collection...

I would suggest the Smash Bros. series, as nearly every character has at least one projectile attack.

You may not be a fan of the series, but Super Dragonball Z was made by one of the SF2 creators I believe, and its quite solid.

I would suggest you checking out the Virtual-On games. It's first-person versus action in mechs found on many systems. You can also pick up a dual stick controller for the Saturn and Dreamcast or play the arcade cab.

Seconded. Virtual On Cyber Troopers for the Sega Saturn is a perfect marriage of shooter/fighter. Sounds perfect for you, too. And what's better? It's fairly cheap.

Also, it's third-person, not first. Maybe the later games are, but this is the only one I've played so far.

The Toshinden series (PSX/Saturn), lots or projectiles there. Toshinden 2 and Toshinden URA have Vermilion, a tall guy in trenchcoat armed with a pistol and double barreled shotgun. In Toshinden 3 he has a new outfit and no longer has unlimited ammo but he also gets a new tazer move. There are a bunch of characters with guns in that game besides him as well, Nagisa, David, Adam. Yeah, it's a fighting game, really simple to play and projectiles of all types galore. And then in Toshinden Subaru (import) Vermilion trades in his old guns for a pair of uzi's, but not as good as previous games.

Psychic Force sounds right up your alley. I played the one on the PSX but I think there is one on Dreamcast as well.

Fighters Megamix on the Saturn has one character that can use a gun. It doesn'tr eally count. But it's always nice to pull out a gun and blast somebody.
