View Full Version : Anyone picking up DSi in April?
Nintendo just announced it's going on sale at the start of April for $170. Think it's worth it?

Personally, no.
They'll have to show me some really cool stuff with the DS Ware to convince me that my not-a-year-old DS Lite isn't gonna cut the mustard.

Personally too happy with my DS Lite to justify a new system for a crap camera and some mini games.

Agreed, I've had my DS Lite for over a year, and the DSi's price tag, lack of a GBA slot, and addition of things I don't need/care about (camera, DSiWare) will keep me away. Besides, if I'm gonna drop $180 on a console, I might as well get something I don't already own...
I just got my DS Lite last week, so I'm definitely a "no".
I share some of the sentiments expressed above, but have heard the D-pad is finally on par with the GB Micros, which I really dig.

The low res cameras are pointless to me. However, the bigger and brighter screens had me leaning, yes.
Removing the GBA slot, a different charger (another one to keep track of) and shorter battery life makes it a no.

I still haven't "upgraded" to a DS Lite...the DSi holds nothing I need.

Yeah, while the "upgrades" are a little pointless it will be interesting to see how the DSiWare pans out. I don't have a DS at the moment so I'll be waiting to pick up the latest model.
I'm a little curious as to why the launch colors are black and blue though? :?

I'm am a longtime Nintendophile and I own an original DS and a lite. I see no need for this model, especially at the new price point. Gonna pass but it does make me wonder if the current DS lite will see a price drop to the magical $99 price point to clear out old stock...

I love my Nintendo systems, but this is waaay too close to the Lite for me to warrant a purchase of 170 bucks now. The lite popularity hasn't even started to die down yet.

will this one end up being the "GBA Micro" of the DS systems?

Everytime a new DS comes out, I always say no. But just like the DS Lite I will be picking this up. The larger screens, downloadable content, and my ever growing collection of DS games says HELL YEAH!

I doubt it. Nintendo is just discontinuing certain colors of the DS Lite until they clear out old stock. Kotaku just had an article a week or two ago about how the black DS Lite is now discontinued. Too bad. It's the only decent color IMO.

Pass. I love my Onyx DS Lite! If I get another DS, it'll be one of those Cobalt blue ones. Same color as my car....

Let's see, trading in two completely useless features that I'll never use, at the expense of losing the GBA port and lower battery life...
The DSi is a downgrade. And $170? Not only has it gone up in price since launch, but I remember that when the PSP and DS came out, one of the reasons to get a DS was because it was quite a bit cheaper ($100 less, to be exact). Now they're the same price. That's a rarity, as Sony's consoles have almost always cost more than Nintendo's.
If the DS Ware store was tied to the Wii's store (so you could share points, that is), then maybe I wouldn't be inclined to laugh so hard at those who do buy it. :)
But, what do I matter? I've been proven, again and again, that I'm so far disconnected from Nintendo's target audience this generation, that I might as well not exist to them.

Nope.
If I'm going to replace any of my handhelds, it'll be my PSP-1001. At least there are enough new features on the slim PSP to justify the cost of an upgrade. It just seems like Nintendo isn't even trying with the DSi.

I picked up a black DSi and I really enjoy it. The camera isn't so great, but you can do a hell of a lot of fooling around with the images after you take them, and the same goes for playing music on it. The screens are larger and brighter, but the battery life sucks. The dpad and buttons are also better.
Overall if I had to pick a DS Lite or a DSi I would go with the DSi, but I kept my Lite since I need the GBA slot.

I'm not much of a DS whore if I don't have a DSi to go with my phats and lites. I can't let the internets down!
Not unless my DS Lite breaks. I'm perfectly happy with my Onyx DS Lite for now.

Im not really happy with the GBA slot removal thing. Ill stick with my DS Classic.
I dropped my ds I got back in 2005 when it first came out...in a puddle of all things. I picked it up only to find out that both of my games, and my ds were wrecked. So I might buy it, though the lack of a GBA slot is makeing me mad.

You know, I can't swear to it yet, but I'm pretty sure I'll be needin' one of those blue ones... Slightly bigger screens, you know, and my eyes are getting old... I'll just add it to the pile of six DS/DSLites we've already got lying around the house...

I've got 4 DSs now (2 reg, 2 lites) - I don't see a point in getting yet another one when it doesn't seem that much different.

No.
The DSI is not the amount I am willing to pay. I only got a Nintendo Wii because my younger brother bought the system with me only paying $125.00 as a result. My most the systems I own were bought used, or I got as a gifts.
Besides the price, I want to wait and see on what games the system gets for DSIware and it there is major problems with the system.

I won't bother getting a DSi and if you already own a DS and thinking of a DSi for the features it has, I'll give a recommendation.
Go buy a PSP. 169.99 just like the DSi. Both systems are just as good but the PSP is actually worth the cost rather than a new overpriced DS that's 40.00 more than the others has an added camera and sd slot, but no GBA backwards compatibility and isn't region free.
That way. You have a DS and a PSP.
I have a DS Phat. Which was sitting in my car passenger seat during my lunch break when I went to a convenient store to get a drink, fell over onto the DS when making a turn. Well. It works, but the buttons stick and make clicking sounds. I'm getting another DS, but I'll get a DS Lite over DSi.
The reason why I'm getting a DS Lite is for region free. I have Jump Ultimate Stars and still do enjoy the game. The DSi can't play it or any of the 40 GBA games I own. With the less amount of features, I'm pretty sure Nintendo could give us more for our money than attempt to fuck us over with a large iron pipe in the ass, but of course, what do you expect of Nintendo these days? I don't expect anything less than what they're doing and I haven't since the end of the GC life cycle where they decided they'd just fuck their fans and pretty much continue doing that from that time to current. Nintendo is going to have to try pretty damn hard to impress me after all their bullshit tactics in the last few years.

nintendo seems to be excellent at pandering to my need for collecting. the lack of gba slot doesn't bother me at all as i play gba games on my gba. or sp. or micro. or gameboy player.....plus now we have new features! bigger screens alone would have made this appealing to me. and even though i probably won't ever seriously use the cameras, they're neat to have. plus there's dsi wear, which is a great addition. definitely preordering

I'll probably end up getting one, mostly due to the fact its release is around my birthday. I'm also sick of the choice of a pink DS lite. What was I thinking?

I can't say I won't buy one because every time I said I wouldn't buy a GBA/GBA SP/DS/DS Lite those devices somehow landed in my possession. As much as I want to say "No" I'm sure Nintendo will dangle some feature (like the Nintendo online store to possibly buy retro games) that will cause me to open my wallet.
At this point, I make no comment on acquiring. It might be safer that way.

The only part of the DSi that isn't region free is the DSiWare games. The system itself is still regionless. They'd not be able to region lock the regular games now. They're just controlling the Download content.

I think you need 2 more lites to match your phats :) On a serious note, what's the reason? Is it the collector in you or multiple family members? I have one phat and a white lite that I bought from a buddy. I have been thinking about getting an onyx model because I like it better but I feel like I could put my gaming $$$ towards stuff I don't have already. I guess 3 wouldn't be so bad compared to some of my gaming brethren here :) I definitely would opt for another Lite over a DSi because no GBA slot = epic fail to me!

The thread ended up boring me so I didn't finish so forgive me if that has been addressed, but just wanted to say that the DSi is just as region free as any DS. Only DSi WiiWare style downloadable titles are region locked. There is no region locking on retail DS releases.
Edit - Should've looked, just a couple post above mine was someone already addressing this.

I had a launch phat, battery went to hell. I traded it in to GS. I took the wife's Phat because I had gotten her a Nintendogs Pink (phat). Then we got lites for each other for xmas. I got a black one and she got a Pikachu one. Then I got a DS kiosk from Dangerboy, so + 2 more Phats. So thats 6.
I'm perfectly happy with my DS Light, I'm passing on this one.

I broke down and bought an Onyx Lite at Best Buy yesterday. I knew I would be mad down the road when there were no new ones to be had so I bit the bullet and got one.
I now have 3 DS systems (2 lites, 1 phat) I'm catching up Icbckr and PapaStu, watch out! :D

Awwww, you're missing the point ;) The wife and I bought the fat ones - one for me, a Japanese candy-pink one for her. Then the lites came out, we did it again. A black one for me, and a Japanese pink one for her ;). But now, to do it a 3rd time? Nahh.

Wuss!!!! Just do it! **PEER PRESSURE**
I'd import a Japanese one potentially for the DSiware games, but i'd still want an American one for the US games. I don't need to go down that route yet. So maybe just 1 DSi. I'll have to see what happens for me come April.

how far does that picto chat app work in a 2 story house? Besides having a second DS (wont have to steal from my significant other) I thought the picto chat app might be fun to have in the house. A little more personalized than texting. And for my 2nd DS, i dont mind giving up the GBA port (again I have original GBA, GBA SP, and GBA player).

I would get one if you could play GBA games. Here is an idea, add enough internal memory so that you could link up the Lite and DSi and transfer a GBA ROM from Lite to DSi. With no removable media, you could/would have to delete the game when you are done playing it. Maybe even have it so that when you power off, you loose the ROM.
I guess that save files may be an issue. Maybe they could be sent back to the original Lite when you are done playing. I am sure that if Nintendo wanted to they could make this work.

I'm thinking about it... since I still don't own a DS yet, and I do own a GBA, this one might be worth getting for me... the price is awful steep though... I thought the regular DS was a bit much at $130, but $40 more for this one? I'll prolly just skip it too, and put all that money towards more new Wii games

DSi-exclusive games and DSiWare games will have to be REALLY good in order for me to get it. Otherwise, nay I say.

I'm shocked Nintendo never used the Wii to distribute DS demos - I mean, they both do peer to peer wifi, how hard is it to setup and use your Wii as a DS demo kiosk?

I won't...at least not now. I rather save that cash and get a Playstation 3 when it hits the supposed $300 mark.
I will get a DSi in the future, but not now...just not worth it, IMO.

No GBA slot = No buy. Kinda gonna be tough to play Guitar Hero don't ya think Nintendo? *backhands*
Actually I still have my original DS as I honestly prefer it over the DS Lite. I may pick up a DS Lite "eventually" though, cause at least it has the GBA slot. :p
