View Full Version : Double Dragon
Well, one of my all time favorite games for the NES was Double dragon. I am only aware of there being a one and two, and I love them both. I can't get past about the 5th level on Double Dragon two, and get stuck pretty fast on Double Dragon one, but whenever ihave frineds over i make them sit through the "Painfull" 2o minutes of gameplay, which they end up enjoying. It is a truely great game, and I was curious if any of you had ever played it?

There's 3 Double Dragon games on the NES(4 if you count Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team). There's more on other systems too.
I also like playing the early Double Dragon games, the later ones just aren't as good.

It is pretty safe to say that at least 80-90% of the people posting here at DP have played some version of Double Dragon in their lifetime.
I'll add a few comments, though.
If you like Double Dragon 1 on the NES, then you should consider picking up either Double Dragon Advance on Gameboy Advance or Double Dragon 1 on the black and white Gameboy. I think you'd enjoy them both.
You should avoid any and all versions of Double Dragon 3 and Double Dragon 5, since both of those games suck. People here might recommend the NES version of Double Dragon 3 but it isn't nearly as good as Double Dragon 1 or 2 on NES.
I do agree it is a great game, one of the best. Double Dragon gets bashed around here a little bit because it is too short and hasn't aged well but what is there is fun.

I make my friends sit through painful Double Dragon experiences as well! We all grew up playing the classics, but they have 'evolved' to PS3 and Xbox 360, so sitting through Double Dragon is now painful to them. I still play the classics and the Double Dragon series, particularly on the NES is a classic.

Yes, but that's the AVGN, he shouldn't be taken seriously because he overreacts to the bad parts of the game.
I played the game and came very close to beating it on a real console when I was younger. Everyone who complains about the difficulty... well... they must suck because I found it OK. The biggest issue I always had was the lifebar, how it doesn't seem to replenish itself between levels. I think.

Yes!! I absolutely love Double Dragon! Even though there are many (technically) superior beat-em-ups out there, none have quite captured the look and feel of Double Dragon. I own many different versions of this game, from the NES all the way up to the 1-on-1 NeoGeo version and love them all (some more than others, of course ;p)
Those of you who have a Dreamcast, or don't mind playing games on your PC, should really check out some of the homebrew DD games. Double Dragon Extreme uses sprites from the first 2 arcade games, as well as music from the arcade, NES and some cool remixed stuff. The game features some pretty nifty moves from the arcade and GBA games, too. Or you can check out Return of Double Dragon, which uses sprites from the GBA game in a Super Double Dragon (SNES) setting, and has some pretty off-the-wall regular and super moves, as well as the ability to juggle people. Not to mention the ability to choose an arranged, SNES/SFC, or PCE soundtrack. I highly recommend looking these two games up if you want to see something a little different!

I'm a huge Double Dragn fan as well. The first two games are great. I have the third game for the Genesis(and use to have it for the Nes) and it really is not as good as the first two. Also, you can play the original arcade version of Double Dragon over Xbox Live as a downloadable title for the 360.
One more thing, avoid the Neo Geo cd/PS1 import Double Dragon game at all cost. It was based on the horrible live action Double Dragon movie and it super sucks.

If you ever want to play the arcade version of the first Double Dragon, all you have to do is find the Genesis version, it is about 95% accurate.
The only major difference is the game is sped up a little compared to the arcade version, sort of a "Double Dragon Turbo" and the control is a little sloppier (you will get used to it after a level or two).
In fact, the Genesis version of Double Dragon doesn't have the same amount of slowdown that the arcade version did. Very nice!
Plus the Genesis version does allow you to select how many credits/continues you would like and how many lives you start with on each credit.
This tells you all you need to know.

I am guessing you are referring to the NES version. I was referring mostly to the arcade version.
As is the case with all NES Double Dragon games, Double Dragon 3 (NES) is different from the arcade version.
I think I own it, but it isn't as good as the first 2.
No, Double Dragon 3 (in any shape or form) isn't as good as the first 2. If anything, the failure of Double Dragon 3 (arcade version) pretty much killed the Double Dragon franchise.
In fact you can look directly to Double Dragon 3 as to why Super Double Dragon (SNES) wasn't more successful. That to me answers sidnotcrazy's question above.
Yes!! I absolutely love Double Dragon! Even though there are many (technically) superior beat-em-ups out there, none have quite captured the look and feel of Double Dragon.
I agree. Plus it was an influential game in the genre. Final Fight, Streets of Rage and River City Ransom aren't possible without Double Dragon.

Double Dragon 3 (NES) is the only version I actually played. It's the only one I've ever owned (I still have it - a blue bootleg cart, obviously). It's interesting to know that the previous versions seem to be better, because I like it a lot. Never went too far, though.

Double Dragon just hasn't aged well for me because there is so many beat em ups that came afterwards that perfected the formula they started. Its the perfect example of a game's history being more important than the game itself.
Having said that though, I used to play the Sega Master System version with my friends all the time when I was young and at the time I probably thought it was the best 2 player game ever.
Its still great to go back to that version and the NES versions based on the nostalgia associated with it, but I would understand if someone playing it for the first time today thought it was kinda crappy.

I love DD, DD2, and BT/DD on the NES, despite me remembering BT/DD being hard it's still a lot of fun with two people. DD2 will always remain my favorite as I find it the best and being the only one I owned way back when, will always have nostalgia tied with it.
I like the original on the Gameboy, and I don't mind Super Double Dragon on the SNES. Never really got into the arcade ones... NES versions for me any day. I still have to check out the one on GBA.

I loved Double Dragon back in the day. I could play that game for hours, and thanks to the cheesing of the elbow punch, you could easily extend one quarter through the whole game :b
Surprised there hasn't been any mention of the SMS version. Much better than the NES one IMO because you have all the moves at the start, you can play with two people at the same time, and there's no annoying parts where you get killed by random falling rocks.

I've played Super Double Dragon for the SNES, but I didn't really get into it so I sold it off. I also had Double Dragon 3 for the Gameboy, that version is pretty terrible(I also sold it off). The NES version wasn't horrible, but it just wasn't as good as the first 2 games(I think I own it, and I haven't tried to sell it off so it's not all that bad). I'm hoping to come across the Genesis version of Double Dragon, my favourite system is the Genesis so it's a must.
If I'm remembering correctly, the arcade version of DD3 made players buy upgrades with actual money, you had to put quarters into the machine to get any upgrades in the shops.

The PS1 version was a crap port but the game is pretty decent for a 1v1 fighter. The final bosses had SNK Boss Syndrome, but the game is easy to get into, and it's fun to play.
Edit:
And I was talking about the NES version of DD3. The arcade one should never be mentioned AGAIN.

I liked DD2 on NES the best, except for those room areas with spike floors or conveyor belt death drops. Those areas are what always took most of the lives, not to mention broke the flow of the game.
DD3 on NES was hard, mainly because you only had one life per character, max four characters, and if you play co-op it's shared. I had to use a Game Genie to beat that game. After playing it awhile like that I finally was able to learn the game well enough to be able to beat it without using it.
Super Double Dragon I found kinda bland. It was nice to play until you realize the game never really changes as you progress. Enemies were all the same, levels weren't notable, and the last boss was just a yellow guy that looked like a different colored minion.

Super Double Dragon is the tops probably followed by the arcade version. Best home version of 1 is on Master System. I think the first DD on the nes kind of blows(though it was one of my first games) due to it being one player.

I've never played the Master System version of DD1 but it's gotta be pretty go if it is better than the Sega Genesis one. I found that 1 a couple weeks ago and was amazed! It is exactly like the arcade 2 people, levels everything. It was alittle shorter than I remember but ausome! I always like the first one on Nes. I like the upgading of moves. Now number 3 on Nes gets my vote for hardest game in the world. Yes you can learn how to play it. I can't even get out of the first room sometimes. I do enjoy me some Double Dragon games though. None of the original Gameboy ones are any good. I would suggest the Advance DD. Though. I should get the MS one? Off to Ebay.....

You might need to look around for awhile, unless you have the money to spend. Most of the time it is priced $10 or up. And that is for the cart only. I'm sure if you wait it out a little, you'll find it for a good price.
A lot of people didn't know Double Dragon was made for the Genesis and that is primarily because Accolade did it. So I am pretty sure it was an unlicensed game. It didn't help that it came out in 1992 either, years after the original Double Dragon in the arcade.
The graphics are spot on and so is the level design. It is literally like having the arcade version in your home. The control is a little unrefined but the arcade version didn't exactly have "smooth" controls either.

I really enjoyed the arcade version of Double Dragon, so I immediately wanted the NES version when it came out. I played it non-stop until I finally was able to beat it on a regular basis. How I was able to do that back then...I'll never know. It's a damn hard game. So much depends on luck (those walls that randomly smash out...ugh.).
The XBLA version is pretty good. I also enjoyed the GBA version. The NES version is obviously crap compared to those two...but it has the nostalgia factor going for it.

Has anyone played the Atari 7800 version of Double Dragon? When it came out there was a lot of hoopla about it having no flicker. However I heard that because of the 'angel chip' it didn't have flicker, but it would slow down in parts, like the forest level.

They have a full review of every official Double Dragon game ever released (original and sequels), regardless of the platform, including mobile phone versions and obscure computer versions. Brilliant stuff, isn't it? And better than the arcade version.
I got my copy of NES Double Dragon II the same year it came out for making straight A's the entire school year. Can't remember what grade I was in but my parents rewarded me with games for getting good grades during most of the NES/SNES era.
I had a lot of fun with that game. The music in the final boss room was awesome, too. Definitely worthy of the first game.

I got DD2 for NES while I was grounded in 7th or 8th grade (I think it was a b-day). I was waaaay to excited not to play it, and the temptation was too much (I was grounded, so it wasn't allowed). I snuck into my room, turned the sound as low as it could go and was completely amazed at the awesomeness. The post-apocalyptic theme, while an 80s cliche, was just so damned well done for an NES game, and it still sucks me in. The music is among the best the NES had to offer. I actually figured out the "kill player 2 for extra lives" the very first time I turned on the game. Since the game had just come out, this trick was not even in magazines yet. I don't know why I did it, but I actually did it with the intention of seeing if this would happen (I guess my logic was that it worked in some games, so why not?). I don't have any idea why that seemed logical to me at the time, but I was thrilled that it actually worked when I tried. I believe I made it to level 6 or 8 on the first try and beat it on the second try. Eventually, I could beat the game on 1 life, but I still played it with an obsession. I just loved the hell out of that game.

Has anyone ever played the PCE CD version of DDII? I just started playing it today (via emu) and I am totally shocked that this version was never really talked about more. It's basically a port of the NES DDII game, but with better graphics, better music and much faster and more responsive gameplay. There are also animated cinemas with voiceovers inbetween levels, but since it's all in Japanese, it doesn't really impact too much, but it's still neat.
The character models, however, are truly something awful. Everybody looks like they stepped out of some 1980's corner tavern, as opposed to the punk-look that the NES version had. The 'Linda' model is just as husky as the 'Williams' model and she's even sporting a mohawk/mullet combo. The difficulty is a little higher, though. I didn't even make it past the 5th level (The Forest) on 'normal' difficulty. The 'Bolo' character does some real damage; infact, he can kill you in just a few hits, which is more realistic, seeing how he's twice your size.
But, like I mentioned earlier, the gameplay is far more responsive than any other version of DD. Your punches come out just as fast as you push the button and you actually have some range with your fists. Every move from the NES home version is here, except for the ability to knee rising enemies (not to be confused with the 'rising knee attack', which is still here). You could even do this in the arcade version, so I don't know if it's missing, or if my timing is off. My only gripe is that when you hit someone with either the 'hurricane kick'/'rising knee attack', they no longer go flying across the screen; instead, they just fall down with the same distance as if you knocked them down with a regular attack. Oh well... I still like this version quite a bit and when I get some more time, I'm gonna try and play all the way through.
My all time favorite is the original Double Dragon on the SMS. I loved that game, played it almost everyday.

We beat the game many times...without losing a man on the second option no hitting mode. Now...were trying to beat the game with only one man and on the third option hitting mode. Whatever its called. LoL I hope you know what I mean. It's like the A, B and C option. Were trying to beat it on the C option with only one man. Anyway...I Love the game so much...I have 6 sealed NES DD2s and 1 sealed NES DD3. I looking to get sealed Super Double Dragon for SNES. That game is great to. It's all about Double Dragon goodness.

I loved the Double Dragon games as a kid on my NES. I never knew about the arcades or the Genesis version, until well past the SNES days, so I never really felt I was missing much. Out of the 3- I have the fondest memories of DDII, as it was the 1st DD I was able to beat without the Game Genie. I'd play it in 2p mode and kill the other brother so I could have 7 (or was it 8) lives. I think this game is the most balanced, and you don't have to spend an insane amount of time mastering it.
How I was able to do that back then...I'll never know. It's a damn hard game. So much depends on luck (those walls that randomly smash out...ugh.).
This is the most irritating thing about the original Double Dragon. It doesn't matter how good you are at the game, those brick walls can make or break you. It's pretty easy to lose all your lives here, and it's completely random according to a few walkthroughs I've read. I can't tell you how frustrating it is, to play 20 minutes of a near perfect game and then get your ass kicked here. It keeps me from playing it more.
I recently repurchased DDIII a few years ago, and haven't been able to get into it again because of the difficulty. I remember it being a little easier as a kid, but it was my least favorite of the 3. The fighting mechanics seem a lot clunkier in this game, than the 1st two. It's not a game that forgives error, which is disappointing because I don't really want to play it as much.

Yes. Go buy yourself an arcade so that you can play the first two games. Or, if thats not a viable option, play the Genesis versions of 1 and 2. Two for Genesis is Japanese import only so that might be an obsticle too. Of course, you could just take the easy route and play both on the Nes, but wheres the fun in that.

The original Double Dragon?
I think it is a great game but it is pretty brief. Almost Altered Beast brief.
The other thing is that a lot of people who play Final Fight, River City Ransom and Streets of Rage then go back to Double Dragon, they might find Double Dragon to be a little underwhelming compared to other games in the genre.
What about these titles:
Rage of the Dragons (Neo Geo)
Double Dragon (Neo Geo)
Double Dragon (SMS)
Double Dragon 2 (Gameboy (B&W)
I just picked my absolute favorites in the list I did.
However, from your list:
-I never played the Neo Geo versions.
-I never really liked the SMS version. Underling enemies are too tough and damaging them without taking hits yourself is tough.
-Gameboy Double Dragon 2 is FUN. But I didn't really rank it because it isn't a genuine port of the arcade or NES version of Double Dragon 2. The developer just took some unrelated Japanese beat-em-up game, Americanized it and called it "Double Dragon 2" for Gameboy. Sure you already knew this, though.
