"brand new" SNES controllers- bootleg or not?

So the Retro Duo is nice and all but its controlelrs are garbage. The d-pads are stiff. Time to buy an actual SNES pad. The locla otlet has a used Ascii brand for $8 or "brand new" in legit-looking boxes for $10. I buy the new one.

The box looks like legit Nintendo goods, with the exception of their URL on the flaps. I'm about 98% certain that didn't exist on old SNES packages anyway. The print is also a bit blurred. The actual controller is close, but the gray shade is off and the button area is just a paper sticker. No "Nintendo" stamp on the plug end, but it remains on the front and back.

Buttons work as well as they do on original controllers. The cord is a bit short.

I've seen these at a few game outlets. Legit or not? Chinese bootleggers aren't prone to leaving original copyright stams on goods or even making the package look licensed. Nintendo has no reason to make these, but Im sure if some company put up a license fee they could make their own.

unfortunately these are all over the place, they are not official. I've seen them at game stores, and all over ebay.

Yeah, I would suggest finding an ASCII Pad. They might be more expensive, but they are better than those bootlegs that you find, which are largely unresponsive to inputs.

asciipad is the best snes pad ever. feels almost exactly like a standard super famicom pad (colored buttons that arent concave like the shitty us pads) and has turbofire switches for all the buttons

Agreed on the ASCII pad - my fave SNES controller by far.

While I loved the NES Advantage I couldn't get used to the SNES one...

Despite feeling good as ar as controls went, the L button stopped working after 5 minutes. I returned it today. The clerk tested out both of their other boxed controllers. The first would pause the game whenever he hit the R button, no doubt faulty wiring. The 2nd worked. But I also bought the $8 Ascii pad while I was there, just to be certain.

The ascii pad really is awesome. I miss the days when 3rd party controllers were actually an improvement over the 1st party pads.
I actually don't mind the RD pads. They are cheap and the dpad is stiff and weird, but I was actually quite successful playing Street Fighter II Turbo with it, so its not terrible.

I got snookered on one of those controllers at the flea market. I didn't look in the box or I would have known it wasn't authentic. I was in kind of a hurry and was trading in a spare copy of TMNT for NES. I asked for a SNES controller and the guy pulls one from under the counter, saying he has a new one in the box. I was pretty psyched, so I grabbed it and left and lo and behold, 3 or 4 days later it broke. Total junk.
