I've been playing my SMS for a bit now and I'm having lots of fun playing Reggie Jackson Baseball. I would play this for HOURS when I was younger and it still seems fun to me now. This made me wonder what other 8-bit sports games y'all would like.

Tecmo Bowl, duh. Still is one of the best arcade style football game EVER!! Super TB added in the season mode, bu the flicker was too much of a problem. Blitz ain't got notin' on Tecmo.

Yes!
Tecmo Bowl, all the way.
Bo Jackson is nearly unstoppable in that game btw, (another reason it is awesome :-D )
Baseball Stars for the NES rates a very close second.

I always liked Starleague Baseball on the Atari 8-bits. And RBI 2 (I consider the latter a bad game really, but I always enjoyed trying to throw a no hitter, or a shutout, and score every inning. Not my fault my Blue Jays were stacked back in the late 80s :) ).

I still want to try Baseball Stars, but I don't have it...

Another great (non-official) baseball game is BaseWars. I loved playing that back in the day. Oh, you want to tag me out on a steal attempt? Why don't I WHACK YOU WITH MY BAT! Heh.

Ice Hockey Nes: 3 fat guys and one skinny guy! LOL

That is the best lineup for Ice Hockey, especially with the superpuck cheat and no goalies!!!!

Back in the day my buddy would rave and rave about Baseball stars, but for my money, the real action was always with Baseball Simulator 1.000 on the NES. That game had a season mode that kicked ass, you could create your own team, and it had all those crazy super-moves that made baseball that much more entertaining. Not the popular choice, but I still stand by it...

Baseball Stars, hands down. I prefer it to any of the modern baseball games, actually. The size of the field, the creating of players and team management....truly a NES pioneer. Long live the Ninja Blacksox!

Ugh...hated the Blacksox...they ran me into the ground like you wouldn't believe.

lol...for me, the team that -always- rained on my parade was the American Dreams. That team was banned from use in my circle of friends, except for one guy who wasnt too good at the game...leveled the playing field for him. They were too damn powerful! Ironically, the SNK Crushers, who I thought would be the dominant team, were league jokes.

Tennis (NES) - pure simple, clean fun! Especially in 2P mode.
Hockey (Lynx) - surprisingly addictive. I'd love to play a comlynx game of that some day!

@AdamG: Yes- BaseWars was AWESOME! I recall taking on my roommates & getting beat by both of them...then one night turning the tables & WHIPPING them! They never played again...hmm.

Great Am Cross Cntry Road Race(Atari 8-bit, thanks maxlords!)
Blades of Steel (NES)
Activision Decathlon (Atari 8-bit) After playing ALL events straight thru, my friend said "I hate you, David Crane!" That game was a true workout.

BTW- not 8-bit but "Awesome Golf (Lynx) knocked my socks off when I 1st saw it- probably the best golf game I've played yet...

I think Aussie rules footy sounds like a damn fun game, if only I could get my hands on it. What region does Australia use, and can an NTSC NES play it easily?

Basewars was so fun, but I sucked at it pretty hard. That's why I'd always bring my SMS with me back in the day so I could romp them with RJB heh

My top vote goes to Tecmo Super Bowl. Finest game ever, if you ask me. But my favorite games on the NES have to be the baseball titles.

As far as baseball games go, Baseball Stars is certainly an excellent title, but I think it is overshadowed by the far superior Bad News Baseball. Use the code to get the girl teams, and it kicks ass!! I play with speed and defense--the NY team. Just TRY and throw me out!!!

My friends and I log in WAY more time on Bad News Baseball than Baseball Stars. Another overlooked baseball title---Little League Baseball. *Ping!!*

It plays on a US NES ok, but its really not at all a damn fun game. Kind of boring actually. Its plays a lot like a soccer game on the NES, and the computer is a real pain in the arse. I swear, it cheats on every tip-off (or whatever its called). It would be a lot cooler if you could knock people out like in the real game. Its worth picking up, if its cheap. You can find it on aussie ebay for not too much--I think I paid $7 US shipped.

My favorite is Ice Hockey for the NES (two skinny guys, a normal one, and a fat one is the winning formula). Some people perfer Blades of Steal, but I think the fist-fights take away some of the appeal of it. I like Ice Hockey better because it's just a more solid game.

Baseball Stars is a close 2nd.

Bumping an old thread that I would have otherwise created.

Favorite 8-bit sports title? Depends on the system and it depends on the sport.

ATARI 2600/7800: Activision's Boxing

GAMEBOY: Play Action Football

NES (Baseball): RBI Baseball 2 followed by Bases Loaded 2 (batting is more fun in RBI 2 but pitching is more fun in Bases Loaded 2, either way fielding is an adventure in both)

NES (Basketball): Double Dribble

NES (Football): Tecmo Bowl (like the original slightly better than Super Bowl)

NES (Hockey): Blades of Steel

NES (Other): Ring King (at least the fighters here don't have mindless patterns and I like the looooong climb to the top with the experience building aspect)

SEGA MASTER SYSTEM: Never played a sports game for it

I always enjoyed Arch Rivals and Tecmo Bowl.
I have the arcade board and the control panel to Arch Rivals, what I need is a monitor! I would like to get the thing running even if it's a ghetto rig.

But for my favorite 8-bit sports titles:
1. Blades of Steel (NES/GB)
2. Baseball (GB)
3. Tennis (GB)
4. Golf (GB)

I'm a sucker for the Mario sports titles for the original GameBoy. :)

Had lots of fun with Double Dribble back in the day, used to always shoot from the 3 point sweet spot, had to be timed carefully though or you go out of bounds (top of the screen lined up with the basket).

A friend of mine used to own Baseball Stars and Tecmo Superbowl, played lots of each and did a whole season of TSB in less than 24 hours, playing all 16 games plus playoff games and generally going unbeaten through the whole run.

RBI Baseball 2 & 3

I never get sick of playing these. Basically the same game except RBI 3 allows switch hitting and diving + jumping. Only thing that sucks is that the CPU isn't too challenging (even on Hard difficulty), so I gotta play a friend if I want some real competition. The hacked versions with the custom teams & rosters are great to play too.

For NES there are several that are tied on my list Tecmo Bowl, Baseball Stars, Blades Of Steel, Double Dribble

For Atari 2600 I think Summer and Winter Games games are both great fun.

For the SMS, Walter Payton Football, and though I know the game is not liked Great Football, once you get over how it's setup it can be quite fun.

For me, it's definitely a toss-up between Tecmo Super Bowl and Blades of Steel. However, I think Blades of Steel has a slight lead. Both games are quite fun, but I seem to play Blades of Steel a lot more and even find it somewhat addicting to keep playing, which is quite rare for me when it comes to any game relating to sports. Doesn't mean TSB is far behind, however.

My favorites would have to be Leaderboard Golf (C64) and Major League Baseball (Intellivision), followed closely by PBA Bowling and Chip Shot Super Pro Golf, also both for Intellivision.

I also enjoy:
Mountain Madness Super Pro Skiing (Intellivision)
RealSports Soccer (Atari 5200)
RealSports Baseball (Atari 5200)
RealSports Tennis (Atari 2600)
Activision Tennis (2600)
Activision Boxing (2600)
Trick Shot (Imagic, 2600)
And so help me, I like the old Atari Golf and Basketball for the 2600 as well.

I'd have to say the worst sports game ever would be Hat Trick for the 7800. Skeet Shoot (Apollo, 2600) is pretty sucky too.

Super Dodge Ball on the NES. The single player game is a joke and you can beat it in about 10 minutes but the multiplayer is awesome. Beanball mode is sweet too.

The runners up would be Baseball Stars, Tennis and Golf, all on the NES.

I really love Super Dodge Ball for the nes. Everything about this title just screams fun. Even the flicker, and terrible AI to me makes this game unique, and a one of a kind experience.

Some of my other favorties would be:

Double Dribble
Blades of Steel
Based Loaded
Racket Attack
10 yard Fight
Tecmo Bowl

I'd have to say the worst sports game ever would be Hat Trick for the 7800.

You know I love Hat Trick for the 7800, but then again its been more than ten years since I last played it...

Ummm....because they're fun???

majinbuu - I have played Baseball Stars II, and it is not as good as the first. It's been a while since I played it, but the whole game seemed a little...off. Like, I know collision detection was off between the end of the bat and the ball, so I couldn't get my patented "line drive double down the line" to work very well. There were 4 stadiums, but I don't remember them having any direct effect on the game play. Also, they took away the ability to make your own team...which was the best part of the game IMO.

Stick with the original NES game, it's still great fun.

My favorite is definitely RBI Baseball (NES). I don't really like the look of the "American"-ified sequels, and prefer the original Famista look better. But this is pure baseball...no frills, no extras, just 9 innings of hitting, running and fielding. Even though I've gotten to the point where I can Mercy Rule the CPU somewhat consistently, I still come back to it time and time again...maybe that's why I come back to it time and time again...

2nd place goes to Baseball Simulator 1.000 (NES). petewhitley mentioned on the first page why it was so great, but I had/have one major qualm with it: It takes for-ever to simulate a single game, let alone a whole season's worth. I dunno if it was like that in any other 8-bit game, but it was slow as molasses here. Still, a very solid game. The SNES sequel is the better of the two, though.

And I can't stand Baseball Stars. Don't like it one bit. Certainly I'm in the minority there. (And yet Baseball Stars 2 is one of my favorite games on the Neo-Geo, go figure.)

StarLeague Baseball on the Atari 8-bit! Even after all these years, it's still my favorite sports sim.

I don't know if choosing between Liners and Sluggers really qualifies it as a sports "sim" ;)

Seriously though, I like that game too! It was my first video game baseball game ever on my Atari 1200XL and I played it for hours with my dad-one of the few video games he would actually play. I still remember taking the pitcher all the way up to the center field fence and double clicking the fire button to watch him scamper back up to the mound at double speed :D

My favorite 8 bit sports game is Tecmo Super Bowl, with Little League Baseball and Bad News Baseball in a tie for second.

I never really cared for Blades of Steel, and IMO Double Dribble has aged horribly.
